Out of the 901 off-line cases of anti-Muslim hate, there were 535 reports of abusive behaviour, 77 threats, 83 assaults, 79 acts of vandalism, 69 cases of discrimination, 39 acts of hate speech and 19 examples of anti-Muslim literature.

Greatest rise in anti-Muslim hate in UK since Hamas's attack on 7 October

Incidents included verbal threats, online abuse and in one instance, a Muslim family had the word "Hamas" written on their front door, a UK-based organisation has said.

Its not detailing the thread at all to point out the increase in attacks on both sides. These marches promote antisemitism. That's why they don't help. People marching with "from the river to the sea" on their banners. Maybe many of them don't know what it means, but Jewish people do.

So are you implying that Jewish people are responsible for the rise in anti-muslim hate?

I think it far more likely that at least a proportion of anti-semetic hate and anti-muslim hate come from the same kind of people who use the current situation to justify abuse to anyone they percieve as "other" whether thats Muslims or Jews

Scirocco · 22/02/2024 20:26

@OppsUpsSide I'm not sure I understand - are you saying that the actions of unpleasant people completely unconnected to me mean that's it's less bad when I get attacked?

I think they are probably the kind of people @JanewaysBun wisely references, so nothing new there. More likely these 'people' use the marches as an excuse to express deeply held prejudice. Marches around my way are mostly middle aged and older people, lots of women, not very diverse - mostly white actually, due to the area demographics. I expect you would find the marchers are a diverse bunch around the country and not only Muslims.

stormy4319trevor · 22/02/2024 20:29

Sorry, I know Muslims can be white, but my area is pretty secular and does not have significant religious/ethnic diversity.

What so you think about the violence Muslims wreak on Christians in other parts of the world? Where they go into people's houses and burn them (those are the lucky ones) or hack them to death. And torch churches. All unprovoked but in the name of Allah.

The above is happening in Sudan and I'm yet to read anything here saying how it's wrong that, that happens.

It's of course very sad that Gaza is in turmoil, sad that Israel suffered the attacks, sad that people in some parts of Sudan have been forced from home. ALL of it is sad. But I can't stand the sanctimonious crowd that forgets just how others have suffered at the hands of Muslims too. Personally, I just look on.

And I'm saying this as someone with one Muslim parent who has seen terrible things spoken about non-muslims by the same people who are now saying how what is going in Gaza is so bad and how Israel has gone so far yet they are not any better themselves in other parts ofbthe worls where they hold more power than those they persecute. It's all rubbish!!

MissyB1 · 22/02/2024 20:32

Didn’t take long for the racists to pitch up did it? 😡

Would you be happy with your relative being attacked / receive hate speech because another Muslim in another part of the world is doing something despicable ? Eye for eye ? Can’t we recognise that anti Muslim hate in the uk is not ok?

@Annime I don't think any of that is a good reason for British Muslims to be attacked.

Parkingt111 · 22/02/2024 20:33

It didn't take long for anti-muslim hate to be justified, and I'm not so suprised either.
I get anti-muslim hate at times in real life and its just something I have sort of accepted as part of being a muslim and a minority, as long as its not physical I try to shrug it off. And also keeping in mind that I am not the only minority to recieve hate simply for being who they are.

I'm not implying anything of the sort. I am Jewish. However, these marches are inflaming hatred. The people marching who think "Jew = bad", with their anti-Semitic banners and the people who feel the marches are pro Hamas. They're not helping anyone.

kirinm · 22/02/2024 20:34

BoohooWoohoo · 22/02/2024 19:35

Considering the UK government’s stance and reporting of pro-Gaza gatherings, this does not surprise me in the slightest.

Pro Gaza? What's wrong with being pro Gaza unless you decide to equate Gaza and it's entire population with Hamas.

OppsUpsSide · 22/02/2024 20:35

@Scirocco no I didn’t say that.

their rhetoric does fuel suspicion and fear that ends up negatively impacting other Muslims

Which part of this sentence made you think I am suggesting it is therefore less bad if you were to be attacked for being a Muslim? My intention was to be clear that the reason I mentioned Islamists is that I think their rhetoric negatively impacts the Muslim community and makes anti-Muslim attacks more likely. I didn’t say that was ok.

I used to experience a lot of Islamophobia in the UK, I’m a Sikh, but then again I’m yet to meet a racist who isn’t thick, so it shouldn’t surprise me really.

Throwawayme · 22/02/2024 19:48

There's also a huge rise in antisemitic abuse globally since the Hamas attacks.

Yes. And the Jewish community are by far the minority in the UK so much more vulnerable IMO.

stormy4319trevor · 22/02/2024 20:37

So sorry to hear that @Parkingt111

We can agree on this.

And ? So because Jewish community is more vulnerable can’t we fight and speak up against any other type of hate ?

OP posts:
kirinm · 22/02/2024 20:40

@NecessaryNC24 yeah so the Muslims can shut up about the abuse they're facing can't they. It's all their own fault for some reason or another but Jews are the only really vulnerable minority.

Some of the posts on this thread are disgusting. Near immediate justification for the rise in anti-Muslim abuse. I assume the thread about Jewish people facing increased levels of abuse post 7/10 immediately blames them too?

namechangefornow123 · 22/02/2024 20:40

After the state of the protests, I'm not surprised.

NecessaryNC24 · 22/02/2024 20:40

Ofc not. I'm from central London and grew up extremely multiculturally. I'm utterly shocked how things are now, racism-wise, it's like we're going backwards.

JamSandle · 22/02/2024 20:41

Antisemitic abuse is also heightened.

namechangefornow123 · 22/02/2024 20:41

This happens after acts of terrorism. Like 7/10.

Parkingt111 · 22/02/2024 20:42

@Simonjt oh yes I remember the hate that British Sikhs recieved after 9/11 by racists who assumed that Sikhs were also Muslim. I hope its not the same this time aswell.
I'm so sorry for your experiences
