I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

Not sure what your link has to do with the topic of the thread …. But if you’re happy to be reported once again for derailment of the thread ….

That post shows Keir Starmer's credibility/or not as a leader - it's very pertinent.

However, feel free to report is it isn't too your lking.

He has a Jewish wife and the family are members of a Synagogue. That could also be relevant to Moslem voters..

Our family treasures our Shabbat dinners, says Keir Starmer

The Labour leader's wife is Jewish and the family are members at London’s Liberal Jewish Synagogue

About your first bit ok it could be , would have been nice to say that when you posted the link as well.

That's his opinion, which counts for nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Israel will do as they see fit and none of us can do anything about it.

You do understand that you're on a thread about politicians' position on the war and people will naturally post updates?

Don't you want a balanced discussion? Or do you just want an echo chamber?

Posters update the positions of politicians, as that is the subject of this thread. I don't think it means every tweet they post is a full endorsement and agreement with that politician is all I'm saying.

People should be able to update the thread without you saying X's position is only an opinion. We know it's their opinion but it's a relevant update to the thread. If you want to say "so what that's only their opinion" for every single update then knock yourself out.

I'm happy that the foreign secretary of the UK is posting that kind of thing. I fully support him (and I'm a lefty). Well done DC

@Ladyjanegreysketle are you aware that the spelling you've used earlier in the thread to refer to Muslims is one which many Muslims find offensive? Just in case you want to go back and edit it. (I know it's not a universally offensive term, but a lot of UK Muslims do find it offensive).

I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about, and I don't know how to edit a post.

Maybe you could enlighten me about both?

EasterIssland · 11/02/2024 20:53

It would be quite interesting if this person actually got the seat and Starmer didn’t. Looking into his Twitter feed I can see he’s against this war

@EasterIssland Interesting candidate.

The ANC was condemned as a terrorist organisation by the governments of South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom. However, it positioned itself as a key player in the negotiations to end apartheid, which began in earnest after the ban was repealed in 1990.

Scirocco · 11/02/2024 21:01

@Ladyjanegreysketle 'Moslem' is a spelling that many UK Muslims find offensive for a few reasons. It was used, historically, as one of the transliterations of the Arabic word, and is still used in some other countries, but in the UK it's become quite linked with far-right Islamophobia. One reason for this is that the pronunciation of 'Moslem' is closer to the pronunciation of a word meaning 'oppressor', which comes from a different root than the word Muslim, which means 'one who submits (to God)'.

If you decide you want to edit your post, there's an 'Edit post' option in the drop-down menu on individual posts.

OK, I get it now.

I can't see the 'edit' button on the drop-down menu on the top right, though.

It's a temperamental feature... I'm not sure if there's maybe a timer on it or something, as I've just checked a couple of my own posts and some have it available but some don't.

Not the strongest of statements from DC at all and needs to be stronger, but something. Meanwhile, where's Starmer?

Probably hiding after this comment today and people reminding him his last 5 months’ words and threats he did against those within his cabinet that voted in favour of a ceasefire months ago

I’ve very late to this thread and have quickly read through it.

Long term labour voter here, there is no way on earth I’ll be voting for Starmers party. I’m in favour of a socialist party as a proper opposition, which is a pipe dream I know.

I do think Labour are now running scared, literally in the last few weeks, they have flipped and flopped. They know they’ve lost the majority of the Muslim vote, they have removed the whip from certain pro-ceasefire MP’s sacking for minor infractions, yet have made it clear their candidate is still standing in Rochdale after his massive cock up.
The interesting thing to me, is the independents are starting to work together. They’ve put indie Leanne Mohamed a Palestinian candidate up against Wes Streeting. Andrew Feinstein ( this guy is a great speaker) up against Starmer’s constituent. George Galloway ( love him or hate him) in Rochdale. Sam Gorst in Liverpool Garsten there are many more. Could this work ? A hung parliament when there is no whip, you get what you elected voting for your concerns. No majority so they have to talk cross house and vote individually. Someone way more knowledgable than me could give their opinion on this, Greens and Independents working in a similar way ? Maybe look at your independents with fresh eyes ?

It could work and honestly would be the best thing for the country (as in, it will limit the damage that can be done with a large majority and hopefully encourage co-operation).

Feinstein is a gem, He is often a speaker on twitter spaces and it's fascinating listening to him recount how terrible Apartheid South Africa was and how many western countries just stood by.

He told a wonderful story of how Mandela met Thatcher after being released and reminded her of when she'd suggested that the SA government "get rid" of Mandela.
