I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

The new PM thinks it's reasonable to cut off water and power to the entire population of Gaza.

https://www.cufi.org.uk/news/corbyn-did-not-just-call-hamas-his-friends-he-said-much-worse-but-too-many-ignored-it/

In truth, Jeremy Corbyn did more than just call Hamas and Hezbollah his friends, he went on to say that labelling Hamas as a terrorist organisation was a “really big, big, historical mistake”.
“The idea that an organisation that is dedicated towards the good of the Palestinian people and bringing about long-term peace and social justice and political justice in the whole region should be labelled as a terrorist organisation by the British government is really a big, big historical mistake and I would invite the government to reconsider their position on this matter and start talking directly to Hamas and Hezbollah…”

And somebody is pleased that he was elected yet I was deleted .

He said that before October the 7th, the out going Tory government had no problems continuing selling arms to Israel even though they are used on civilians, causing thousands of civilian deaths. I’m not optimistic labour will better with Keir.

PeasfullPerson · 05/07/2024 17:51

Given Keir Starmers legal background, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Pleased to see Diane Abbott and Jeremy elected.

Jeremy Corbyn? Oh wow

I'd rather hoped Corbyn wouldn't get re-elected.

Anyone who refers to proscribed terrorist organisations as "friends" has no place representing anyone in Parliament, and his response to the report about institutional antisemitism in the Labour party was shameful.

Thank you so much x

For disliking an unpleasant man? You're very welcome, but no thanks necessary - he's awful (and really bad at his job). I really thought people would bin him this time.

Well I and an awful lot of other people care about our Goverments stance on what is happening in other Countries, how we are viewed by the rest of the world does matter. But also humanity matters very much, i dont want to hear politicians in our Country supporting the slaughter of a whole nation.

Nobody is supporting the slaughter of a whole nation. Do the maths. A horrific number of civilians have died but it is nothing close to a whole nation.. This sort of ridiculous exaggeration serves noone, least of all the Palestinians, because it means that you can't even start a sensible conversation.

What is happening in other countries? Can you tell me about another conflict you want out govt to intervene in or just Gaza?

I'm all ears.

Starmer's wife seems lovely. She's got values, strong work ethic, integrity... - all things it's great to see in Number 10. She works in the NHS, too!

Yes, I'm sure I heard a Labour politician say the Tories wouldn't give them access to the legal advice re: weapons. Will be interesting to see what is lurking regarding there

ConnieCounter · 05/07/2024 19:35

Aren't you concerned that he thinks denying an entire population water and energy is OK?

Yeah. And. So. What.

His wife isn't running the country or are you suggesting she should influence him?

Cherie Blair thought she should be in charge though.

Erm, no, I was just saying she seems quite nice from what I've read about her?

Parkingt111 · 05/07/2024 21:22

@HowIrresponsible perhaps you meant to post that towards the poster who actually posted the article that focused on his wife and her background. To whom scirocco was responding to.

Are you a friend of Cherie Blair & did she tell you that? She had quite a busy & successful career of her own. Starmer rates his wife's opinion very highly as anyone married to an intelligent spouse would. I agree @Scirocco she seems lovely.

anotherlevel · 05/07/2024 21:40

@HowIrresponsible

What is wrong with complimenting the newly appointed PM's wife? I'm struggling to see where anyone could be offended by this. I agree with @Scirocco she does seem lovely.

Oh you have been totally unaware that our (now previous) Government gave their blessing to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people, and the UK has been supplying arms to enable that collective punishment?

I'm aware hamas are moaning they're losing a war they started and it doesn't make them vcitms.

I'm waiting for you to tell me the other conflicts you're aware of that you wish the government to intervene in that you mentioned earlier? Well? Come on?

We actually bombed Iraq and Afghanistan - our own armed forces did it and I didn't see the same level or outrage about that. Or do they not matter?
