I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

@1dayatatime

Every arms sale to be used by the Israeli forces is potentially contributing to war crimes and even genocide. Given the information available, countries are running a real risk of complicity in some very serious acts.

1dayatatime · 05/04/2024 22:44

@Scirocco

By arms sales do you mean purchases from or sales to Israel or both?

If it's both then they it starts to include a lot of countries:
US, Philippines, India, Czech, Brazil, Romania, Hungary, UK, UAE, Morocco, Spain, Kenya, Bahrain, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Canada, Germany etc.

I think it's reasonable to call for a pause on both sales to and deliveries from a country where there are considered to be concerns about war crimes and genocide. It's either supplying arms to potentially be used in the commission of those acts, or buying arms which were potentially developed and field-tested during the commission of those acts as well as providing money which could be used to fund the commission of those acts.

I do think they should stop the weapons exchange indeed.
That would be an incentive for a ceasefire and hopefully will start the final peace process.
If they carry on, regardless, I think we will be on the path to the (just a few months ago unthinkable) sanctions route.
I am impressed with the amount of people backing the petitions and their former job titles. I do think though, that the official position of the UK government will not budge, at least yet.

This isn't a UK politician obviously but I thought the new Irish Taoiseach (PM) made some interesting comments this evening and wasn't sure where to post.

Comments below:
"In Gaza we see a humanitarian catastrophe worsen before our eyes.

We condemn the massacre carried out by Hamas in October and again call for the release of all hostages.

But we cannot stay silent on the actions of Israel either.

Reason has been replaced by revenge and by the bombing, maiming and death of children.

Famine. A spectre no Irish person can bear.

Anyone who can countenance deliberate starvation has lost their humanity.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, the Irish people could not be clearer. We are repulsed by your actions.

Ceasefire now and let the aid flow safely.
We need a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side-by-side, in peace and security.

I reiterate Ireland stands ready to recognise the state of Palestine."

I hope he stands by his comments and takes some action.

This was poetic justice, good on Kay Burley for asking the question.

Where did you read that? Didn’t our government just assist in keeping his country safe! He seems to have some weird kind of complex where he thinks the whole world is against him.

I’m reading comments that whilst labour did well this week it didn’t did as well as they hoped for. That other green parties won much more seats than expected. This is a hint that people aren’t happy with the current labour (starmer) and many of the things he is being controversial about (one of them Gaza)

The results are quite interesting...

Conservatives down 473 but Labour only up 185. (with 1 council left). Labour still have over 1,000 councillors, but if it had been a straight swing, you would expect them to have won more seats from the Conservatives' losses. Instead, there's a spread of increases across the Lib Dems, Greens and independents (and Reform).

It will be interesting to see more detailed analysis of which voters went where...

I thought it was because we do what the US tell us to. But OK, now I’ve seen this I totally believe otherwise, and also I have conveniently forgotten about the human impact of what Israel has done. There are some mixed messages coming out.

50 MPs and peers have written an open letter to the Home Secretary demanding the creation of a Gaza Family Scheme to allow Palestinians in the UK to bring their family members trapped in Gaza to safety
