I’ve read that in the last few days Starmer is concerned about the Muslim people not voting labour cuz of his position

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/30/labour-acts-on-fears-muslims-will-not-vote-for-party-over-gaza-stance

do you think this will have an impact on this years general elections ? I guess whatever they do they’ll lose votes

I would imagine signing that letter is a way of ensuring that you don't get a job in a future labour govt.

I have check the newspapers for the government and Labour position into the sad death of over 100 palestinians, and many injured during the delivery of aid, but I have not found any declaration from either Sunak or Starmer.
Have you seen any?

No, there doesn’t seem to be any official response from our politicians 😡 they’ve gone very quiet about the whole situation actually.

MushMonster · 01/03/2024 19:41

They are too busy getting tangled over their own words and the shit they have in their heads to actually think about the real word. Or do anything, God forbid!
They are utterly useless.

The standard line for procrastination or evasion is "Information is still coming out, we want to wait until we can ensure that we have the full facts, before we comment"

And still has the backing of the PM. He really does take Islamophobia seriously, doesn't he?

And even US had enough with the aid delivery restrictions. Now to be delivered by sea, following air drops.
I wonder how the next ceasefire vote in the UN will go.
US will collaborate with the UN in the aid delivery (acccording to the Guardian), quite a step forward from a few weeks back.
Let's see what the UK government says about all this.
At least, Cameron is on talks to allow aid.
Can they please just let the aid in? It will, hopefully, reach the hostages too!

EasterIssland · 07/03/2024 20:43

A labour councillor resigns after being interrogated for over 6h by her party as to why she voted in favour of a ceasefire

Sounds disgraceful.
Thanks for your post.
Makes me feel better about the fact that though a natural labour voter I didn't give my vote to labour in today's Lewisham mayoral election.
Sod em

134 MPs & Lords from Labour, the Conservatives, SNP, Lib Dems & more – I have called for arms sales to be suspended.

glad to see movement from the different parties. My MP who sent me an email saying how thanks to her party a ceasefire had been requested has not signed it

So the government's position looks to potentially be aiding and abetting in war crimes and genocide. Following in the footsteps of the US again.

Yep war mongerer bed fellows yet again. How they seem to think they are morally superior to the rest of the world is deluded

Much as I would like to think that - I don[t agree with you on this!

The UK is not - never was - the "junior partner" in terms of genocidal colonialism. We kind of, sort of, literally helped invent that in its modern sense! Long before the US eclipsed the UK in power, we enabled it to take shape in its current form by colonising North America and wiping out its native population!

Or ... to paraphrase that famous Mitchell & Webb sketch: "not only are we the baddies - we actually sort of wrote the manual!"

Now imagining Padawan Rishi and - amidst all the horror - this made me laugh out loud!

The UK sells around £42 million of arms sales to Israel per year but buys nearly $500 million in arms sales per year from Israel. For example the recent £1.4 billion Watchkeeper drone purchase which has been a bit of a disaster as they keep crashing.

But that said UK arms purchases from Israel are insignificant compared to say how much the UAE purchases from Israel.
