Though Twitter remains undefeated and Judge Sebitende is now trending, I will wait to read her dissent.

ICJ: SA Genocide Case vs. ISR - part 2

Be interesting to see how governments and media around the world react to this ruling.

I hope that there will be enough political pressure to produce some sort of tangible response.

Sunak … we are talking about you

I'm so happy. Think this is really the best outcome possible. Let's hope Israel change tack now

Sky news analysis:

Analysis: Israel will find court's ruling 'deeply objectionable'
Reacting to what we have just heard from the International Court of Justice, our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke explains what the provisional measures.
He says the court has called on Israel to make sure genocide or genocidal behaviour does not take place and that there are some basic services for civilians.
The court has also asked Israel to report back to it within a month.
"They're not the harshest provisional measures, but I think Israel will find them deeply, deeply objectionable," Clarke says.
"To accept somehow that they have behaved genocidal and that they've got to change what the IDF is doing... they'll find that very tough.
"But, these are not unreasonable measures, if you think the situation for the Palestinians will get worse before it gets better."

I have 0 faith that Israel will do as requested. But at least it’s put Israel in its place for the rest of the world and that they can’t continue killing civilians because Hamas attacked us

I do hope governments around the world stop supporting the Israel government, providing cash and weapons unless they want to be related with continue funding this

also, those posters that said SA was wrong to bring this case and that they should look at themselves first before reporting Israel. All I can say is I’m glad ICJ doesn’t think like you

I personally think a full ceasefire and release of hostages would have been the best.
But you can say its a start in the right direction I suppose

anotherlevel · 26/01/2024 13:06

@EasterIssland I agree. I doubt very much that Israel will do any of them. It would be like an admission of guilt if they did.

I think its semantics to make the verdict more palatable to Israel and her allies.
Israel should do everything in its power to avoid killing Palestinians, causing them serious bodily or mental harm or imposing measures intended to prevent Palestinian women from giving birth.
To me this says ceasefire, to all intents and purposes.

ConnieCounter · 26/01/2024 13:07

I don't think they could call for a ceasefire because they don't have jurisdiction over what Hamas does. I assume that's what Hamas's statement last night was about, re agreeing to a ceasefire if the court called for it.

Parkingt111 · 26/01/2024 13:08

@AdamRyan fair point

AdamRyan · 26/01/2024 13:08

Israel must prevent and punish any public comments that could be considered incitement to commit genocide in Gaza

Let's see how Ben Gvir etc manage this

Netanyahu is stuck with him. If he tries to kick him out then he loses the majority in his coalition. Ben Gvir knows the leverage he has over him

Omfg that man is unbelievable. All this law put in place after the holocaust and he just dismisses it. Unbelievable.

They don't help themselves do they.

The people of Israel and the people of Gaza both deserve better governance.

Well, I guess I will still be marching for a ceasefire. But I didn't expect this ruling at all. I can't believe that most of the judges, including the British, Australian and American judges, voted in favour of this ruling! I thought Israel would get away scott free. I literally cried with relief!

That’s almost funny. He just doesn’t give a damn does he?

Did that really happen? LOL! 😂 So childish.

anotherlevel · 26/01/2024 13:23

I have to admit that I am disappointed that they haven't declared a ceasefire, but I agree with @Parkingt111.

Nevertheless, as you pointed out, it's a positive start, and we can only hope that they find Israel guilty of genocide at the merit stage. But by the time this occurs, hundreds more Palestinians will have tragically died.
