And right on cue

Israel’s security minister responds to ICJ ruling by tweeting 'Hague Shmague'

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s security minister responded to Friday’s ICJ ruling by tweeting: “Hague Shmague”.

What is wrong with them seriously?!

Will also be interesting to see how Mark Regev and Tzipi Hotovely respond to this.

It will indeed with regard to the latter.

Some of her statements make her sound more like a politico than an ambassador.
In a quick google I came across this, which seems to present her as a great advert for Israel, for women, and for the sisterhood's contribution to empathy.

This near intro sentence gives a flavour of the piece.

"In honor of International Women’s Day, the Magazine decided to check in with the team of smart, strong women representing Israel in the United Kingdom."

Meet the women leading Israel's Embassy in the UK

Tzipi Hotovely: Having a female ambassador changes the face Israel presents to the world.

I have utter respect for Naledi Pandor.
A very lucid commentary from her on this ruling & the comment on Israel & it's powerful friends.

Edited

Their reaction will be particularly interesting given that the Israeli ad hoc judge actually voted for several of the measures.

I thought this was rather interesting. Bibi will be fuming.

South Africa's foreign minster, Naledi Pandor, said that to abide by the conditions, there would have be ceasefire. Hopefully the ruling means that there will in a ceasefire practice, even though it is not one of the conditions. At least the ruling means that aid must be let in and rebuild the destroyed medical system.

Called it!

Netanyahu: Court rightly rejected the demand to deny Israel its right to self-defense
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision by the ICJ "rightly rejected the outrageous demand to deny" Israel the right to basic self-defense to which it is entitled as a country. According to him, "the very claim that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians is not just false, it is outrageous, and the court's willingness to discuss it at all is a mark of disgrace that will not be erased for generations."

Netanyahu added that Israel will continue the war until "absolute victory," until all hostages are returned and Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel. (Haaretz live feed)

Unfortunately for Palestinians I can't imagine that BN will comply. He seems to think that the rules of governance do not apply to him or to israel. Many more will lose their lives.

The ICJ ruling orders israel to "desist from killing, injuring, destroying life and preventing births in relation to Palestinians".

These measures will not happen without a ceasefire.

ben givr has now apparently disregarded the courts decisions stating that "decisions that endanger the continued existence of the state of israel must not be listened to" and has labelled the ICJ as antisemitic. You can't make this shit up.

Me too, she's been fantastic. I loved the comment about Israel's powerful friends. We know exactly who she was talking about. I hope this ruling would mean that they, America in particular, will stop supporting Israel and cut off military aid. It's unlikely, but one can hope.

Fussandmisery · 26/01/2024 13:43

To be fair the ICJ does not have the power to enforce their rulings so even if they ruled Israel should stop fighting they wouldn’t have done. Israel will just add the ICJ to the (long) list of organisations that are biased against them and carry on

Parkingt111 · 26/01/2024 13:43

The whole thing is extremely depressing, also for the vast majority of Palestinians and Israelis who just want to live a peaceful life.
It's sad that whilst man has achieved extraordinary feats over the years, the world superpowers have not been able to negotiate the release of innocent hostages and to prevent the continuous killing and starving of thousands of innocent civilians, and instead just make a comment here and there whilst a genocide is unfolding before our very eyes.
It's a tragedy and nobody is winning here. The sooner the war ends and a sustainable solution towards peace is initiated, the better.

Really? @HeidiInTheBigCity was it mentioned which measures?

Dulra · 26/01/2024 13:49

Just dipping in with my two cents I've been following your thread. I think the ruling is the best that could have been hoped for Israel can stamp their feet all they like and claim they'll carry on regardless but they will become more and more isolated, the countries such as the US who has been supporting them will be in very difficult positions because they cannot be seen to support genocide. I think Israel will have no option but to comply, yes rage against it, but comply all the same.

I hope you're are right. The most important thing right now is to stop the killing and get aid to the Palestinians. Hopefully full justice will come in time.

Both Incitement and humanitarian assistance had a 16-1 majority - Judge Sebutinde from Uganda being the only dissenting vote. Barak voted for both of these!

I think its semantics to make the verdict more palatable to Israel and her allies.
Israel should do everything in its power to avoid killing Palestinians, causing them serious bodily or mental harm or imposing measures intended to prevent Palestinian women from giving birth.
To me this says ceasefire, to all intents and purposes.

And they have to report back in a month to show what they have done and presumably effectiveness!

Offwiththecircus · 26/01/2024 13:58

Any word from Starmer, leader in waiting, on this?

Parkingt111 · 26/01/2024 14:01

This on BBC from Jeremy Bowen pretty much sums up why this is a win for South Africa and a defeat for Israel. It also explains why the court fell short of calling for a full ceasefire

What the judge has said adds up to a victory for South Africa's lawyers and a defeat for Israel's.
She didn't say "you have to have a ceasefire" because under international humanitarian law, under the right circumstances and within the legal framework, the war is legal and Israel was attacked.
But what she is saying is the way that Israel conducts the war really has to change radically under these conditions.
Israel has consistently said that its fight respects the laws of war. The judge’s remarks indicate that the court does not agree.
I think the Israelis will be outraged by the judgement and the South Africans will be very happy that the case they made will be accepted by the court, and that the case will now proceed.

Absolutely
I've been listening to analysis of the judgement on Irish news and the contributors are positive about the judgement. Feels it will encourage more nations to now support the case and there will be pressure put on Israel to change their approach and yes the sooner the better. They have effectively been ordered to prevent the killings of Palestinians in other words let aid it and stop bombing indiscriminately

I wish that was the case but contrast this with the ICJ’s provisional measures in Ukraine v Russia:

By Order of March 16, 2022, the ICJ indicated among its provisional measures that “the Russian Federation shall immediately suspend the military operations it began on February 24, 2022 in the territory of Ukraine”.

Desertrose2023 · 26/01/2024 14:02

The reality is they’ve fallen far short of where they could have gone

Efacsen · 26/01/2024 14:02

@HeidiInTheBigCity and @Parkingt111

Guess they've already got their excuses lined up for those 2

Humanitarian aid - that's the useless UNs fault
Incitement - hey it's just rhetoric - that's how ME politics work

Shouldn't be a problem as so many senior Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that they follow International Law.

Props to the ICJ judges for saying prove it, in writing! Bet there are a lot of squeaky bums in the IDF right now.

But that was an unprovoked invasion so of course that would be the judgement.
