@Scirocco yes seems reasonable.

Scirocco · 20/02/2024 12:47

Yes, I hope it's taken seriously.

UN World Food Programme suspends food aid to Northern Gaza until it can be safely delivered

''The decision to pause deliveries to the north of the Gaza Strip has not been taken lightly, as we know it means the situation there will deteriorate further and more people risk dying of hunger. WFP is deeply committed to urgently reaching desperate people across Gaza but the safety and security to deliver critical food aid – and for the people receiving it – must be ensured.

Deliveries to the north resumed on Sunday after a three-week suspension following the strike on an UNRWA truck and due to the absence of a functioning humanitarian notification system. The plan was to send 10 trucks of food for seven straight days, to help stem the tide of hunger and desperation and to begin building trust in communities that there would be enough food for all.

On Sunday, as WFP started the route towards Gaza City, the convoy was surrounded by crowds of hungry people close to the Wadi Gaza checkpoint. First fending off multiple attempts by people trying to climb aboard our trucks, then facing gunfire once we entered Gaza City, our team was able to distribute a small quantity of the food along the way. On Monday, the second convoy’s journey north faced complete chaos and violence due to the collapse of civil order. Several trucks were looted between Khan Younes and Deir al Balah and a truck driver was beaten. The remaining flour was spontaneously distributed off the trucks in Gaza city, amidst high tension and explosive anger …

Gaza is hanging by a thread and WFP must be enabled to reverse the path towards famine for thousands of desperately hungry people.

As soon as is practically possible...
Return of the hostages.
Happy with that.

Will Hamas agree to that? I hope so. Could have released them months ago, what are they waiting for?

Parkingt111 · 20/02/2024 13:13

What does temporary mean? How temporary
I agree that there needs to be a stop in fighting for hostages to be released safely and much needed aid to come in
But it would be cruel if once that happens then the fighting and restrictions in aid which is collective punishment continues.
There needs to be a clause that there will be continuous work for a move towards a permanent ceasefire during this period.
And both sides will have to agree to be willing to work towards this no matter how much they hate each other.

Efacsen · 20/02/2024 13:22

Even if fighting stopped today

Even if the fighting in Gaza stopped now, about 8,000 more people could still die there over the next six months due to the public health crisis caused by the Israel-Hamas war, according to a report by independent researchers in the US and Britain.

I'd love the hostages to be freed.

I also can see why this needs to be accompanied by an assurance that Israel will stop. There needs to be assurance that Israel won't become even more aggressive once they don't need to worry about harming hostages.

As it stands Israel not only haven't given this reassurance but have insisted that the war would continue.

I agree. Hamas also need to confirm they will stop lobbing missiles into Israel and ceasefire. It takes agreement from both sides.

Efacsen · 20/02/2024 13:46

Eylon Levy 5 minutes ago - doesn't sound too hopeful to me

He quoted Benjamin Netanyahu saying “We will settle accounts with them. We will bring these kidnappers of babies to justice”

Levy said ceasefire demands that Israel should “abandon children to the death squads” that abducted them are “a stain on humanity”.

'Temporary is such a wishy washy cop out. Where's the ambition and drive to end this nightmare? I don't think it comes across as serious. Sorry, I think the US should call for immediate ceasefire, contingent on hostage release, with cast iron proposals for the protection of peace and civilian life going forwards.

And Israel promising never to 'mow the grass' again, to release all their hostages, and to relax their stranglehold on goods coming in/out of Gaza to allow free movement of goods?

Yes you worded it better than me.

stormy4319trevor · 20/02/2024 13:53

@Parkingt111 It's frustrating to see the US tip toe about, when so many lives hang in the balance.

@Efacsen I am not making Excuses but I think the release of the footage of the Bibas family has temperatures running high at the moment.

Is that not exactly why that footage was released ie to raise the temperature?

stomachamelon · 20/02/2024 14:37

Perhaps.
I wasn't looking for a disagreement was just by way of explanation.

Efacsen · 20/02/2024 14:41

Neither was I

Just suggesting an alternative interpretation

Parkingt111 · 20/02/2024 15:13

I have seen that Prince William has made a statement calling for an end to the fighting. It seems abit unusual of senior members of the royal family to do.

Efacsen · 20/02/2024 15:17

Agree - also thought it was unusual - don't remember RF saying anything about Ukraine for example tho' not a big RF watcher so might have missed it

Really interesting interview with the ex UN military head and Force Commander Canadian Brigadier-General in Rwanda Roméo Dallair on Radio 4 today.
A bit of context first for those of us who don't know who he is.
He was the one who warned the UN of the impending genocide there and had asked to be send more troop so they could stop it. Instead, they had to leave the country. He suffered severe mental health problems after this.
When asked if he considered what is happening in Gaza a genocide, his answer was yes. He went on to explain why.

With Starmer and US calling for ceasefire, there seems to have been a shift. Perhaps Sunak may comment soon along similar lines.

IDK maybe I'm wrong but the prospect of a bloodbath in Rafah [incl hostages dying] along with the famine unfolding have focussed minds and just about everyone wants the ground invasion called off [at least for now]

I hope so but I believe the Israeli government will ignore these calls.
The only way, I believe, they will stop if the US stop funding them.

I think that's likely. I also think the displacement of millions to Egypt, and hence to Europe may be of concern to politicians also.
