Israel will coordinate with Egypt on Palestinian refugees, says foreign minister

When asked where refugees in Rafah would go, he suggested Gaza’s second city Khan Younis, but said that Israel would coordinate with Egypt to ensure Cairo’s interests were not harmed. “We will coordinate with Egypt,” he said.

ICJ declines to order additional provisional measures against Israel

In a statement released on its website, the International Court of Justice says that the humanitarian situation in Rafah and Israel’s impending military operation there do “not demand the indication of additional provisional measures.”

*Israeli diplomat accuses the UN of slowing down aid deliveries in Gaza

Yaki Lopez, a diplomat at Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has claimed that Israel is “facilitating the delivery of aid to Gaza faster than the UN can deliver it”.

“For the last 3 days, 500 trucks with aid inspected by Israel has been waiting on the Gaza side to be distributed by UN agencies,” he wrote on X. “Hey, @UN get your act together and pick it up already!”*

Does Israel accept responsibility for anything?

This one must me who’s fault

Sorry what? What is their reasoning?

Sorry what? What is their reasoning?

Basically they acknowledged how awful the situation is in Rafah and said that Israel needs to urgently implement measures already advised on 24th Jan

Efacsen · 16/02/2024 22:14

Here's the rest of the quote

“The Court notes that the most recent developments in the Gaza Strip, and in Rafah, in particular, ‘would exponentially increase what is already a humanitarian nightmare with untold regional consequences’,” the statement reads.

“This perilous situation demands immediate and effective implementation of the provisional measures indicated by the Court in its Order of 26 January 2024, which are applicable throughout the Gaza Strip, including in Rafah,” it continues.

Given what has been happening I would have hoped additional measures would have been put in place.

Israel would just ignore the additional measures anyway.

SA seems to be happy with the response

EU and ME leaders are looking at a firm time line for a 2SS.

Sounds like it will be unpalatable to Israel:

“The proposed plan includes steps that Israel has previously refused, including the evacuation of many West Bank settlements, a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem and a combined security apparatus and government for the West Bank and Gaza.”

But if they do want peace with Palestinians and neighbouring countries- they may need to compromise.

There appears to be growing realisation that a 2SS is the only viable option for peace:

“A two-state solution is not a ‘gift.’ It is the only viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Representative Jerry Nadler of New York wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“Israel must be able to defend itself, particularly after the horrors of October 7, but long-run security will only come through an appropriately negotiated solution that involves rebuilding Gaza and establishing a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank with adequate security and governance plans,” he added.”

Interesting

US envoy says Israel has not presented evidence that Hamas diverted UN aid deliveries in Gaza
Israel has not presented specific evidence that Hamas is diverting UN aid, and its recent targeted killings of Gaza police commanders safeguarding truck convoys have made it “virtually impossible” to distribute the goods safely, a top US envoy said in rare public criticism of Israel reports The Associated Press (AP).

With the departure of police escorts following Israeli strikes, criminal gangs are increasingly targeting the convoys, said David Satterfield, the Biden administration’s special Middle East envoy for humanitarian issues. He said the lawlessness as well as regular Israeli protests at crossing points by those opposed to aid going into Gaza have disrupted delivery and distribution.

Snowypeak · 17/02/2024 13:19

Lawlessness would occur in any population in any similar starving scenario. To use this to justify further bombings (because Hamas) is despicable.

This is a different case isn't it - brought by Egypt

IDK is it a bit confusing to have both cases on the same thread? Or does the new case need it's own thread?

@Efacsen ah you're probably right and apologies for posting it here.

US is proposing a UN resolution for a temporary ceasefire. Would mean US going beyond bilateral talks with the Israeli government and now involving the UN. Don’t know what it would mean in practice, if Israel ignored- but the fact it is being proposed by the US would give it teeth.

A ceasefire with the hostages returned would be great

Polka83 · 20/02/2024 09:47

Agree Alice. And a route to a 2SS for a chance of meaningful peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.

stomachamelon · 20/02/2024 11:54

As soon as is practically possible...
Return of the hostages.
Happy with that.

Those of us who care about Palestinians need clarity on what happens after the temporary ceasefire.

@stomachamelon

As soon as is practically possible...
Save the lives of innocent Palestinians including children. Return of the hostages. Allow aid to enter.
Happy with that.
