@ConnieCounter not sure how they can defend this tbh.

If they can't find a reasonable and believable spin and if all fails, blame it on Hamas propaganda.

There's lots of things I don't think they'll be able to spin and then they manage it!

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/01/2024 22:11

I think the UK and US are totally complicit in all this. Oh boy, do we love having wars in the Middle East and causing chaos.

Someone has to be making a lot of money out of this. Most ordinary people, the world over, would prefer to just muddle along together. Hatred is not essential or desirable.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. Anyone care to place a bet on what it could be?

It doesn’t seem to matter what they do. I really do wonder what red line the Israeli government would have to cross for the west to withdraw its support.

I think the red line would be a nuclear attack on Gaza.

Even Netanyahu thought heritage minister, Amihai Eliyahu, was going too far in suggesting a nuclear attack on Gaza, temporarily suspending him

SomeCatFromJapan · 28/01/2024 22:41

None of the pro-Israel accounts I follow on X are remotely impressed with Shlomo Karhi and Itamar Ben Gvir and their antics with the settlers, no-one is trying to spin that as a good thing. It's clearly massively unhelpful and provocative.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/01/2024 22:50

@SomeCatFromJapan I imagine Israel is rather like the UK and US with loving a 51/49 type split. It is really normal. If you sensibly stick to "Following" on Twitter, you're hanging out with your clan.

It is also normal to sack / force resignation on out of line cabinet ministers. Encouraging the extremists at the moment is a terrible idea.

I think part of the issue is that we keep hearing that pro Israeli people aren't impressed with Israel but it means nothing? Not impressed with the government, not impressed with the settlers and the policies that allow settlers to flourish, not impressed with the genocidal rhetoric, not impressed with the threats to reoccupy Gaza, not impressed with the racism, not impressed with the looting etc etc but still offer them their unwavering support. It seems really hollow tbh. Who cares if someone is 'unimpressed', what does that even mean if they are still going to back Israel no matter what?

I've checked a few big Republican influencer accounts on Twitter and they're not falling for it
right now. Which is promising as they're usually the gung ho "USA, USA, USA" bomb anything sorts.

The one thing you can do on X if you come across any tweets which don’t appear to conform to the ICJ ruling is to tag them on #ICJ_Breach
They are actively checking and documenting proof of intent or any other incidents breaking the emergency ruling.

The rally held in Jerusalem yesterday to promote the expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and renewal of Israeli settlements in that occupied territory, was attended by no less than 12 of Israel’s 37 government ministers (almost a third).

freethem · 29/01/2024 10:01

Although, "Ethnic cleansing" hasn't been recognised as an independent crime under international law, the coercive practices that are used to remove a civilian population (which can include murder, detention, rape, severe physical injury to civilians, confinement of civilian population in ghetto areas, deliberate military acts and the list goes on) can constitute to crimes against humanity and can be assimilated to specific war crimes. Furthermore, such acts can fall within the meaning of the Genocide convention.

I'm posting this because I have seen that apparently we do not know that ethnic cleansing isn't a war crime.

Good. Let these morons keep up their public displays of genocidal intent. Hopefully SA’s legal team is documenting each and every instance.

Correct.

Only genocide is a crime under international law as it currently stands.

Ethnic cleansing has no definition under international law. So, if you want to make an accusation under international law, it would have to be that of genocide.

And the western governments who defunded unwra will do absolutely fucking nothing about this. The hypocrisy is sickening.

whatsitcalledwhen · 29/01/2024 11:26

@SomeCatFromJapan

You say you agree with the defunding of UNRWA due to the investigation into employees accused of being terrorists.

You also say:

I don't personally think that the IDF is a terrorist organisation so no, I do not think their funding should be suspended.

You might not 'personally think' that the IDF's behaviour is illegal / tantamount to war crimes etc but as their behaviour is being investigated by Euromed Human Rights Monitor due to reports of civilians being shot dead while waving white flags, and ICJ has said the IDF must commit to "not killing members of a particular group (in this case, Palestinians), not causing physical or psychological harm to members of that group" which would be in complete contradiction of civilians holding white flags being shot dead, why don't you think their funding should also be suspended at least while investigations continue?

I genuinely don't understand why the logic you apply to the first one isn't also applied in the same way to the second example?

Even if you don't 'personally think' civilians holding white flags have been shot dead (presumably believing the footage is doctored) don't you believe the accusations are worthy of an investigation and funding being suspended while that investigation takes place?

Why are you being cryptic to @stomachameleon? They asked a valid question which you haven't answered. 🤔🧐

stomachameleon · 29/01/2024 22:11

@freethem I clearly don't otherwise I wouldn't ask.

"Heart-wrenching footage. Despite the International Court of Justice's decision, Israel escalated mass killings of civilians in Gaza, with dozens of victims' bodies scattered in the streets."
