It's a blatantly obvious attempt to change the narrative and take the heat away from yesterday's ruling. It's absolutely disgusting.

Apologies @SomeCatFromJapan

It wasn't obvious from my post but it wasn't aimed at you. I was referring to the US decision to defund UNRWA.

Parkingt111 · 27/01/2024 13:39

I have just seen it reported on Sky news that the UK have followed and they are now reporting from a middle eastern expert on the issue who says such a move is penalising starving Gazans

Mr Doyle cited a report from the World Food Programme detailing the extreme levels of hunger in the region.
"So the United States thinks in this situation that it should penalise people who are literally starving to death. It beggars belief," he said.
He said the rest of the world is watching "aghast" at the move.

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/01/2024 13:41

Apologies too, I misunderstood. Reading that back I can see what you were saying in the context.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 27/01/2024 13:34

12 out of 30,000 UNWRA personnel are suspected of being involved in terrorist activities that's 0.04%

Statistically that is insignificant.

It's absolute hypocrisy and appalling double standards that the US and allies continue to provide weapons to Israel, where there are explicit human rights violations and concerns of war crimes, yet stop the funding that is a lifeline for starving displaced civilians in currently one of the worst war zones in the world

Parkingt111 · 27/01/2024 13:52

It's hard to think that US's reputation could sink much lower... I agree

Chris Doyle, the director of the Council of British-Arab Understanding, told Sky News the initial US decision "beggars belief".
"It's hard to think that the US reputation across the world could sink much lower," he says.
"But on the basis of allegations that have been made... it has suspended aid to the most vulnerable people, not just in the Gaza Strip, but on the planet."

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 27/01/2024 14:11

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/01/2024 13:22

Do you think that things should be equal and funding for the IDF should also be suspended until the allegations are dealt with?

I don't personally think that the IDF is a terrorist organisation so no, I do not think their funding should be suspended.

Anyway I'll probably bow out now. I'm all for a robust exchange of views but I'm not a masochist and I do draw the line at being called disgusting.

Edited

So now UN/UNWRA is a terrorist organisation???

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 27/01/2024 14:25

Surely the defunding of UNWRA bumps in Provisional Measure 4:

The State of Israel shall take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

If the US etc are not funding the aid, Israel will have to.

The US were major funders
https://www.unrwa.org/how-you-can-help/government-partners/funding-trends

Do we just have to accept that there is a lot of fake news, propaganda and funny business about?

Auvergne63 · 27/01/2024 15:39

ConnieCounter · 27/01/2024 11:20

Pulling UNWRA funding whilst paying for Israeli bombs that are killing thousands of children is absolutely disgusting. It's literally mind boggling.

It is amoral. Business before blood, it seems. Despicable.

inkworks273 · 27/01/2024 17:59

According to twitter, Israel has committed multiple massacres since the ICJ ruling yesterday. Are they just going to continue as they were?

Cantonet · 27/01/2024 18:08

It looks like it.
They still have the complete backing of the US & other countries. With absolutely no impunity to change. The situation for the Palestinians has got worse with the pulling out of the UNRWA funding.
The way this war is being fought will affect the way wars will be fought in the future, for all of us. There will be no rules. Biden ironically is not making the world safer but he's placing the West/ our future generations in absolute peril.

Unsurprising and of course they will. They obviously think they are untouchable.

Of course they are! It was never going to be different!

As a matter of fact, they might just make things worse because they are angry.

... is there a word for "narcissistic rage - but it happens on state level"? If not, there should be!

@HeidiInTheBigCity -i think the word is'genocide' 😞

Fussandmisery · 28/01/2024 09:06

A comedic take on the situation for a change

Pretty accurate summary of what happened.

But I think you have to remember that even if the ICJ called for a ceasefire it wouldn’t have made any difference as they can’t enforce their rulings.

They called for a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and that didn’t happen cos Putin just ignored them.

Statement from the government of Uganda saying that the position of the judge who ruled against, is not the position of the government

"Israeli government ministers dance at a conference planning illegal Israeli settlements in Gaza.

So far, I have spotted the ministers of communication, national security, and heritage, at least."

If this is true then surely no one can defend it.

It doesn’t seem to matter what they do. I really do wonder what red line the Israeli government would have to cross for the west to withdraw its support.

BelleHathor · 28/01/2024 21:51

I can't get my head around not even pretending to not want occupy Gaza again? This is all evidence that can be submitted to the ICJ. It's completely defiant and disrespectful.

On another note, 3 US soldiers have been killed and 34 wounded via a drone attack by the Iraqi resistance in area 55 on the border of Jordan/Syria. So the settlers may have to delay their moving plans as US senators are calling for bombing Iran.

Sickening scenes.

I wonder how the pro-Israelis will spin this one.

They've crossed so many I don't think there's anymore they can cross?

anotherlevel · 28/01/2024 22:04

@ConnieCounter not sure how they can defend this tbh.

If they can't find a reasonable and believable spin and if all fails, blame it on Hamas propaganda.
