"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

I don’t underestimate China. The current government is bad news

It is time to be incredibly sceptical about everything we are told, from every source including the most august institutions of free speech. Putin and Xi are both emboldened by divisions in the West and keen to sow discord. Islamists are embroiled in their destabilisation of democracy and free speech. Apologies if this sounds a bit conspiracy theory-ish, but I am coming round to the notion, even while I want to reject it.

No that's not conspiracy theory, you're bang on. But what these shilling mouthpieces spread actually is conspiracy theory, or if I'm being kind, the seeds of conspiracy theory. And the danger is that the mainstream are increasingly buying into it. You can see it in some of the tropes and slogans parroted verbatim by some Mumsnet posters.

These shills have always been there, but social media amplifies their message in a way not possible several decades ago. Whether that's anti-West or anti-Zionist, but also the anti-vax, Ulez, and Great Reset/covid crowd too. It's out of control now and makes rational discussion impossible because you're always hit with "but you're being controlled...." with the obligatory nose-tap.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 12:28

It's also easier to seed anti-government discontent when your government are bloody awful.

Someone on another thread suggesting that I should be sceptical that the UK government is sending aid to Gaza because I'm extremely critical of their education policy was quite interesting.

Israel according to a Russian government newsletter.

Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!
quantumbutterfly · 21/01/2024 13:15

If the bear is russia, and the dragon china, who's the bullock?

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 21/01/2024 13:15

Vile

quantumbutterfly · 21/01/2024 13:23

Is it supposed to be N.korea?

quantumbutterfly · 21/01/2024 13:24

Does Russia think the north Koreans are a load of bullocks? How rude.😁

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

stomachameleon · 21/01/2024 13:31

I believe
South Africa (giraffe)
India (elephant)
Brazil (jaguar)
China (dragon)
Arabs (camel)
Russia (bear)

And
Italy (wolf)
Japan (monkey)
France (rooster)
Uk (lion)
Israel (cockroach)
Canada (beetle)
USA (vulture)
Germany (cheetah)

quantumbutterfly · 21/01/2024 13:37

Aw shucks I would have chosen an otter for UK, cute and playful critters that they are. Our poor old lion needs a few chip butties to fatten him up.
& Tbh that bear looks a bit podgy so probably ready for hibernation.😉

Papyrophile · 21/01/2024 13:49

In my book, Islamist does refer to extremists, not to all Muslims. Just thought I should spell that out clearly.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 15:17

Yes, @Papyrophile , I thought you did. I just think it is probably prudent to be really clear about these things when there are others posting that Muslims are trying to destroy our country in some Great Replacement. Don't want to get lumped in with them!

Yeah, well I'm not happy that a Giraffe is on the wrong side!

I don't think it's a conspiracy theory to say that there are anti-west groups actively working against us. That was clear from the manipulation of Brexit.

China is building up to war, and I think is often overlooked as a threat compared to Russia in the UK.

I think people are happy to believe that Iran are stirring up trouble in the Middle East by funding various groups and regimes but are less willing to believe the same thing might be happening to us.

I think we do need to be careful to emphasise that when we are talking about Islamists, we mean radical extremists rather than another word for Muslim, particularly given the now-deleted posts upthread.

Totally agree with you

Yes China is building up to a invasion. They have made that clear. It will probably happen in the next year because most the countries that potentially help Taiwan are getting spread fairly thinly regarding resources, weapons or military.

If people have not been watching the three big nasties that are the leaders of Russia, Iran and China very closely in the last couple of years they should be.

theconfidenceofwho · 21/01/2024 16:52

Completely agree @Trulywonderful

quantumbutterfly · 21/01/2024 17:06

So a fight between Islamists and Communists for domination. Do Syria and Iran realise who they're in bed with. First warplane is free and then you pay.

Papyrophile · 21/01/2024 18:16

I think the Chinese may wait to invade Taiwan until the US election. Hate the man as I do, he seemed able to wave his willy around with the other big swinging dicks. His unpredictability may be an advantage. (She says, with fingers and toes crossed.)

stomachameleon · 21/01/2024 18:35

@Papyrophile is that Trumps wanger you are referring too?

Papyrophile · 21/01/2024 19:06

Afraid so!

stomachameleon · 21/01/2024 19:23

I always imagine he has a wanger snuggled in between off ginger candy floss like pubes.

Is that too much information?

etmoiandme · 21/01/2024 19:25

@stomachameleon You say that like you've given it a lot of thought!😂

They are strange bedfellows, but their interests seem
to
align.

'The enemy of my enemy is my friend' springs to mind.

@noblegiraffe

"I think people are happy to believe that Iran are stirring up trouble in the Middle East by funding various groups and regimes but are less willing to believe the same thing might be happening to us. "

If Iran can spend multi millions funding Hamas, Houthis,Iraqi militants, Syrian militants, Hezbollah etc etc. Then I really don't think it's that much beyond the realms of possibility that they could bung a few hundred grand towards the useful idiots organising protests or speaking at protests in the West.
