Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!

"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

Supporting terrorism.

Are the chanters aware of how many innocent people have died in Yeman? Far more than in Gaza.

Supporting terrorists attacking boats from many countries.

Sausagenbacon · 15/01/2024 10:22

Just shows how many f***ts there ate around, allied to this cause

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 14:00

Thanks for the votes so far, an interesting mix.

If people really understood what was happening, they wouldn’t support this terrorism.

Innocent ship workers being targeted and desire to disrupt and control global trade. If nothing was done to stop them, more people would die and there’s the risk of food/oil/goods in general becoming even more expensive, when people are struggling here as it is.

eluveitie · 15/01/2024 14:12

Can't believe 15% of people think supporting terrorism is fine.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 18:14

It was over 20% earlier but has gone down as the day has gone on.

Fucking idiots who’ve jumped on the bandwagon to virtue signal. If they supported Yemen, they would want the Houthis eliminated just like if they really support Palestine, they would want Hamas destroyed.
It’s very obvious that all these large protests worldwide are heavily funded and orchestrated.

bluechicky · 15/01/2024 18:22

What's going on?

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 18:51

bluechicky · 15/01/2024 18:22

What's going on?

There's a terrorist group from Yemen called the Houthis attacking random international shipping in the Red Sea. They have been told to stop it. They haven't, so international shipping is now avoiding the Red Sea adding weeks to journey times and increasing costs of goods that will affect all of us.

The other day the UK and the US launched strikes and bombed their equipment to try to stop the attacks.

This terrorist group are objectively awful on every scale. Destroyed their own country, killed thousands of people, use child soldiers. reintroduced slavery, no rights for women etc etc. Their slogan on their flag includes Death to America, Death to Israel, A curse upon Jews.

They are funded by Iran.

And because they have said that their attacks on international shipping are 'for a ceasefire in Gaza' (they said that they were targeting Israeli-bound ships but they are not), there are people marching on the streets of London chanting that they are proud of them and that they should continue attacking international shipping.

And you can see from the poll that there are people who think this is reasonable.

Imagine a world where our politicians cared about civilians in the Middle East ( the non Israeli ones). Imagine instead of dropping bombs as the answer they asked for a ceasefire instead. This is what is going to happen, we use ‘targeted’ bombing it doesn’t work, so then we think fuck it and just turn Yemen into the new Gaza and the terrible cycle of western violence on Middle East civilians continues.

Mufflepuff · 15/01/2024 19:37

Do you really think a ceasefire in Gaza will make Houthi rebels stop their terrorism?

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 19:39

Imagine instead of dropping bombs as the answer they asked for a ceasefire instead.

We tried asking the Houthis to stop firing on international shipping and it didn't work.

OP posts:
soupfiend · 15/01/2024 19:41

'Can I have a ceasefire please '

No.

Then what?

headstone · 15/01/2024 19:42

I’ve no reason to doubt it. However if it didn’t then there would be more of a case for military action. As I it stands this escalation that certain posters seem to want is going to be terrible for civilians. Maybe that should be our focus Noblegiraffe? Not if people are eating McDonalds and drinking Starbucks in sufficient quantities but encouraging de-escalation from our war mongering politicians.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 19:47

I’ve no reason to doubt it

You've no reason to doubt the word of a terrorist group who already demonstrably lied when they said that they were targeting Israeli-linked ships?

Are you sure?

Glad I don't live in London with all the protests about anything and everything. We have a square in our town where every Saturday you get a group of about 10-15 people protesting about something. I've come to recognise it's the mainly the same people protesting every weekend.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 19:48

encouraging de-escalation from our war mongering politicians.

Attacking ships is good, but bombing radars so that people can't attack ships is bad and an escalation?

OP posts:
headstone · 15/01/2024 19:50

It only started after mass civilian casualties in Gaza, so it makes sense that a ceasefire would curtail the activities. Far better to try a peaceful solution then bomb them and when that doesn’t work bomb the whole country.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 19:55

Far better to try a peaceful solution then bomb them and when that doesn’t work bomb the whole country.

Who says anything about bombing a whole country?

Why are you not suggesting that the Houthis should be looking for a peaceful solution instead of attacking random ships

Thanks for the summary- very succinct

The Houthis became extremists following the Iraq war. It was the Iraq war that led to the Houthis officially adopting the slogan, 'God Is Great, Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse on the Jews, Victory to Islam'.

The Iraq war that the US led and we were part of, completely destabilized the Middle East and encouraged all sorts to extremists to flourish. not least ISIS.

We can call the Houthis terrorists but what do we call our war on Iraq? A war with absolutely no basis that destabilised a huge region and allowed all sorts of terrorist groups to grow up. Are we terrorists for our involvement in a war that killed thousands - possibly hundreds of thousands of civilians?

Of course I don't agree with people chanting "Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" No one should be treating attacks or war like it is some kind of football game. Hundreds of thousands of people have already died in Yemen, the country is a complete disaster.

I really think though we need to look at the results of our actions in the past and learn from them. Not expect to do the same things and get different results. We really need to think long term.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 20:52

We can call the Houthis terrorists but what do we call our war on Iraq?

Incredible. Look at the state of this deflection.

gloriagloria · 15/01/2024 20:54

I think it’s inappropriate and my main concern (as with all extreme protesters) is they will detract from legitimate protest against our government’s unequivocal support for the Israeli Government’s actions and play into the hands of those who want to discredit those calling for a ceasefire .

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 20:58

Video of the "extreme" protesters praising the Houthis.

They look like normal people, tbh. My real concern is how they are being radicalised into spouting this shit.
