Conflict in the Middle East

Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!

"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

I hadn’t noticed that @stomachameleon but you are dead right. And Iran is mighty pissed off that Israel destroyed their nuclear capability

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 22:18

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 15/01/2024 22:08

Exactly. They are moronic. Same as the river to the sea lot. Losers.

They are not stupid enough to say outright what they mean though.

Note that it's "Yemen" and not "Houthi".

And "turn another ship around" not "hijack another Japanese ship".

Houthi Houthi you're so hip, fire a rocket at that ship!

anyone who supports the governments position but criticises these protesters is a total hypocrite. Destabilising the Middle East will cause mass civilian casualties, worse then we are currently seeing. Frankly you should be ashamed of yourselves. De-escalation and ceasefire is the only solution if you genuinely care about civilians.

I'm not ashamed

Terrorists can't be negotiated with

newyearnewnothing · 15/01/2024 22:19

Some people just love a cause and to chant shite!
It gives them something to chat about .

It just reinforces the view that many people have of the rent a mob marchers

Half a dozen brain cells between them

Knitgoodwoman · 15/01/2024 22:24

I love the armchair generals on these threads talking about targeting. You’ve looked into the specific targets the US and UK have taken out? The weapons storage, launch sites, known terrorists who’ve murdered civilians?
Our armed forces is so small now, the wider public know nothing about defence and how it actually works.

stomachameleon · 15/01/2024 22:26

@headstone I know we have covered this a thousand times but if I honestly thought Hamas would ceasefire I would be all for it. No one wants a war to continue.

But I honestly think Hamas would see a ceasefire as a capitulation by Israel and a sign of weakness... based on their post 7/10 statements. And I think we would be seeing more horrific headlines of attacks in Israel.

So as unpalatable as it is Hamas have to go. And maybe instead of treating them like thugs they are the pleas to put their civilians first won't fall on deaf ears. And they turn inward for the sake of their population.

I think it’s also really imports t to keep it in proportion that they are an extremely small proportion of the many thousands at the protest who were peacefully focused on calling for a ceasefire.

headstone · 15/01/2024 22:29

Eluveitie, I think if they were chanting death to Israel and a curse on all Jews then it would be a hate crime. Supporting the current actions of the Houthis, which some believe may put pressure on Israel to stop it’s genocidal behaviour, No I wouldn’t personally consider a hate crime, but it’s up to the police anyway.
I’ve just done some reading about the Houthis as I dont know much about them really, very fascinating history.
I really feel for the Yemeni at the moment and I hope for the de-escalation in the entire region and for the release of hostages. We know the US is not good at de-escalation and protecting civilians and we should all bear this in mind.

untitledmum · 15/01/2024 22:34

@headstone The first paragraph of your post above directly contradicts with your second paragraph.
You can't simultaneously be supporting the Houthis getting involved in harming Israel (emmeshing itself in a conflict mostly unrelated to Yemen), and at the same time be hoping for a de-escalation.

I don't think this is helpful language.

I do think that there is radicalisation going on.

These people probably then went onto listen to that speech about wiping out the anti-Zionist death cult.

More radicalisation.

@MoneyMoneyMoneyy

"Video as expected - randoms with low IQs with nothing better to do on a weekend. Wish these people would fuck off and do something productive"

+++

I personally think it is exactly because such protesters have nothing productive to do is a large part of why they are protesting.

If for example they were worried about paying their mortgage, putting food on the table, making sure the homework is done, driving to a drama class with DD on Saturday morning quickly turning around lunch in order to make football practice for DS then maybe just maybe they wouldn't have time to fill their heads and time with going on intellectually lacking protests.

stomachameleon · 15/01/2024 23:00

@gloriagloria that keeps being said but I don't see it as a small minority anymore. In fact it's increasing in size as well as in intolerance, antisemitism and not peaceful rhetoric.

Humdingerydoo · 15/01/2024 23:01

"We know the US is not good at de-escalation and protecting civilians and we should all bear this in mind."

You know who else isn't good at de-escalation or protecting civilians? The Houthis, Hamas and other terrorist groups. Maybe stop pretending they're just some kind of weird rebels or freedom fighters and accept that they're terrorists who terrorise their own people as well as everyone who doesn't agree with them.

Absolutely ridiculous that this is having to be clarified over and over again. Not everything wrong in the world is the fault of the US. At some point, you really do need to start pointing fingers at the actual terrorists committing the terrorist acts as well.

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 15/01/2024 23:01

fair enough @noblegiraffe - anyone who gets radicalised is thick as mince,imho.

Whereas I feel it is something we all need to be on guard against.

@gloriagloria

It really isn't a small minority anymore- for example this was a speech by Palestinian activist Mohammed El- Kurd in London at the weekend where he states

"I dare you to look into the eyes of a Gazan child and tell him you tried to do your best. Our day will come. But we must not be complacent. Our day will come. But we must normalise massacres as a status quo"

@stomachameleon remember no one films the dumpy middle aged women like me quietly pottering along in our sensible shoes and seasalt waterproofs. You can’t get a feel of the mix of people from social media.

etmoiandme · 15/01/2024 23:14

Not only are they not a small minority anymore, but the 'peaceful majority' know exactly who they're marching alongside now.

@gloriagloria

A fair point but these instances of unacceptable speeches or chants have been increasingly either that or the police are starting to take a firmer line.

A lot of posters have never been to the protests but base their views on daily mail headlines and selective videos. They then brandish them as hate marches and anti Semitic and obviously everyone that goes to them is lacking in brain cells or has nothing better to do.
As it happens quite a few of my friends and family went this weekend. They work and have busy lives but took time out for something that they feel strongly about and took their families with them. These are the vast majority of people marching.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2024 23:25

What would you do if you were trudging along and someone whipped out a loudhailer and a Houthi chant, or someone started giving a speech about Zionist death cults?
