@EasterIssland my post probably came across as a bit glib. There is certainly a risk of escalation within the region (although I’m not sure your suggestion of working with the Lebanese government is very feasible) , but I found it so frustrating to see Israel perform such a targeted operation with very little “collateral damage” when they argue that the mass indiscriminate slaughter in Gaza is the only way forward.

Tomatoshish · 02/01/2024 21:57

I agree @gloriagloria And to do it from a distance. But their doorstep its not possible! strange isn't it!

As @Parkingt111 has said not sure whether in this thread or another one apologies. Wishes they used such a targeted operation with minimal casualties in Gaza …

stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 22:20

@EasterIssland so why hasn't the Lebanese government done something about Hezbollah then?

I've always been struck by the contradiction. Mossad can seem to locate and assassinate targets outside of Israel but in Gaza, one of the most surveilled places on earth, the only option was to level it, regardless of the amount of civilian casualties it caused.

Because Hezbollah is slightly larger than the state army and they have quite a lot of public support.

My thoughts exactly
Today's assassination shows that Israel is more than capable of surgical strikes if they wanted to
Yet they use thousands of unguided bombs instead causing mass civilian casualties

@nightcreature i’m sure we are all very grateful that you’ve take the time from your no doubt busy schedule to provide such an erudite and illuminating contribution to our humble thread.

SeaStatePhenomenal · 02/01/2024 23:27

I imagine it is extremely difficult for the Israelis to carry out surgical strikes when those hideous terrorists have embedded themselves absolutely everywhere. Obviously.

Eagerly awaiting something which make you yawn with boredom?

I'm curious, would you describe yourself as a masochist?

stormy4319trevor · 02/01/2024 23:34

@stomachamaleon I'm sorry you feel what you say is not taken in good faith. You are entitled to your views, and I always find you honest and rather a kindly voice, even though I disagree with you on lots of things. The whole issue is deeply upsetting and it's hard for everyone to remember that we are not at war with each other.

stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 23:43

@stormy4319trevor thank you I appreciate that and I am not referring to you. Or parking.
I honestly think if people take the time out of their day to post regularly about something it must be something they feel passionately about.
We all need to educate ourselves and show empathy and understanding. It's a sad time for all.

stomachameleon · 02/01/2024 23:52

@Parkingt111 remember where the jewel in the crown- Sinwar- is though!

Hi @gloriagloria there was some discussion on this on the South Africa Genocide convention thread. It’s a known military strategy of Israel. The Israeli army/government have the capability to carry out extremely targeted attacks, but they choose not to.

sharing an article that @Parkingt111 kindly included in the SA thread which is helpful

Israel’s use of disproportionate force is a long-established tactic – with a clear aim | Paul Rogers

The strategy goes well beyond defeating an opponent: it seeks to destroy key infrastructure and the economy, says academic Paul Rogers

Powerful and disturbing clip from documentary Tantura.

"In the war of 1948 hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated. Israelis call it 'The War of Independence. Palestinians call it 'Nakba"'. The film examines one village- Tantura and why "Nakba" is taboo in Israeli society."

(IMDB description)

Thank you for sharing. Tantura is an important documentary that everyone should watch. Until people are aware of how the Palestinian people were expelled, killed and raped during the Nakba, then they will not be able to fully understand or contextualise the current conflict and the need for a sustainable peace to take into account a fair and just solution for those who suffered, and continue to suffer until today.

How is it blood libel?

Israel is a nation state. The IDF is the army of that state. We are repeatedly told that 20% of the population of Israel are not Jewish.

You are the only person here talking about Jewish people. The rest of us are talking about the IDF and some of their appalling actions in Gaza. I'm quite surprised senior military personnel haven't banned soldiers from posting videos on social media, they keep incriminating themselves.

Do accuse everyone who criticises the army or government of a country of racial prejudice? What prejudice do you think people who criticise Putin and the Russian army are guilty of?

This. blood libel is a serious unwarranted accusation and an attempt at censorship.

all people have done is speculate about the reasons a baby has been reportedly “taken” by an Israeli soldier to Israel. In the absence of any official statement naming the child and confirming her whereabouts, it is not unreasonable to do this. Especially as there was no mention of medical treatment in the original reports, and this does not appear to be an isolated incident. If the baby was taken outside of Gaza as a well intentioned but misguided act, for the purpose of medical care then fine. I would like to see proof of that. I don’t accept “end of story” just because someone says so, especially given the IDF’s track record on transparency.

I hope all these Palestinian children are safe and well and are returned to their surviving family.

Just seen this, very upsetting. Allegedly Israeli soldiers told this father and his children it was safe to pass through the refugee camp and then executed them.
I’m trying to see if there are other reports but I can’t honestly fathom how a human being could do this to other people.

A post angrily denying blood libel then your very next post is an unverified and horrific accusation.

stomachameleon · 03/01/2024 19:21

@SomeCatFromJapan they always are. You can say and accuse whatever you like apparently.
It's relentless.

Toothyfruity · 03/01/2024 19:36

Poor IDF. I'm sure they'd never harm children like that.
