Israeli soldiers ransack West Bank theatre, beat and detain artists

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2023/12/16/mulr-d16.html

The Israeli military’s reign of terror directed against the Palestinian population—including its leading cultural and intellectual figures—continues unabated. The beating and shooting of journalists, the assassination of poets, the murder of painters and writers in air strikes—this is one distinctive feature of the hideous face of the Netanyahu-Biden genocide in Gaza, accompanied as well by renewed brutality and murder in the occupied West Bank.

On Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a raid against the Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, destroying as much of the theatre’s equipment as the IDF thugs could get their hands on and arresting three of its leading artists.

Freedom Theatre in Jenin [Photo: Adnan Torokman, the Freedom Theatre]According to a statement by the theatre, on the morning of December 13, “the Israeli army began attacking and ransacking the Freedom Theatre. They shot from inside the theatre, destroying the offices and knocking down a wall.”

Zoe Lafferty, the theatre’s associate director, described the attack to the Middle East Eye as a form of “cultural genocide.” The IDF “took the new computer we bought to run our shows from,” Lafferty said. “It wasn’t expensive but it is a huge amount of money for the Freedom Theatre. We needed to use it for the next eight years.”

The theatre’s statement explained that the army “then went to the homes of [artistic director] Ahmed Tobasi and [producer and manager] Mustafa Sheta, blindfolded, handcuffed and took them away. That evening the army went to the home of [recently graduated acting student] Jamal Abu Joas and severely beat him and then took him.”

The theatre added that “We can confirm that Tobasi has been released. He is suffering from leg and back pain where the Israeli army beat him. We will update his condition as soon as possible.”

The Israeli military occupation forces have damaged or completely destroyed at least six cemeteries in the northern Gaza Strip during their recent ground invasion advancements.

According to an analysis conducted by The New York Times using satellite imagery and video footage, Israeli forces demolished part of the Tunisian cemetery to establish a temporary military position in the Shuja’iyya neighbourhood in Gaza.

A satellite image captured on Sunday reveals Israeli armoured vehicles and defensive structures on ground that previously housed intact graves, despite international law considering the destruction of religious locations as possible war crimes.

The Israeli military has not provided explanations to The New York Times regarding the demolition of the cemetery or any measures taken to safeguard religious sites in Gaza.

Moreover, the Israeli military vehicles had also damaged numerous graves at a smaller cemetery located half a mile north-west of the Tunisian cemetery. A video released by the Israeli military on Sunday revealed soldiers involved in attacks in the area.

On that same day, satellite imagery captured fresh tracks and potential military vehicle presence at Al-Faluja cemetery in the Jabalya, northern Gaza, reported The New York Times.

Furthermore, there were indications of a potential military setup at a cemetery in Beit Hanoun, also situated in the northern part of Gaza.

The additional cemeteries identified by The New York Times as being destroyed by Israeli forces are located in Sheik Ijlin, a neighbourhood in Gaza City, and Beit Lahia, a city situated in the northernmost part of Gaza.

Since a week-long truce collapsed at the start of December, Israeli forces have extended their ground campaign from the northern Gaza Strip into the south, with the storming of the main southern city of Khan Yunis.

Meanwhile, fighting has only intensified amid the rubble of the north, where Israel had previously said its military objectives had been largely met.

"How American citizens are leading rise of ‘settler violence’ on Palestinian lands"

60,000 Americans live in illegal settlements in the West Bank, built on land stolen from Palestinians. Another 100,000 live in occupied East Jerusalem, in homes stolen from Palestinians.

Breaking, from Al Jazeera

Israeli bulldozers crush sick, wounded Palestinians outside Gaza hospitalAnas al-Sharif, our colleague at Al Jazeera Arabic, is reporting from the ground in Gaza that Israeli bulldozers have trampled over the tents used by Palestinians taking shelter outside Kamal Adwan Hospital and brutally crushed them.
“A terrifying massacre and unspeakable scenes. What the Israeli occupation did inside Kamal Adwan Hospital is a horrific crime against citizens and medical staff,” al-Sharif said in a post on X.
“Dozens of displaced, sick and wounded people were buried alive. The occupation [Israeli] bulldozers trampled the tents of the displaced people in the hospital yard and brutally crushed them.”

oh my god @PeasfullPerson it is getting more disgusting than one could ever imagine.

PeasfullPerson · 16/12/2023 11:12

It’s sickening. War is not an excuse to behave like this.

Parkingt111 · 16/12/2023 11:12

@PeasfullPerson that's terrible!!

PeasfullPerson-They also bombed the southern parts of the hospital. I knew that the IDF would do something like this. After seeing their attacks on Al Shifa and other hospitals, I'm not surprised. Disgusted, but not surprised. It was obvious to me that they were itching to do something like this.

Holding up a white flag and shirtless, just how did the IDF confuse them as being a threat?

Oh my God that is horrendous. There's no excuse for this at all - even in war.

flowerssss · 16/12/2023 16:18

I don't know if anyone has seen it, but I've just seen the footage of the bulldozed tents outside the hospital. Shocking. Horrendous.

I wonder if the MSM will even bother reporting on it.

"The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the main authority for Roman Catholics in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Cyprus, has issued a statement saying, “A sniper of the IDF murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza,” and that seven more people were shot and wounded.

“No warning was given, no notification was provided. They were shot in cold blood inside the premises of the Parish, where there are no belligerents.”"

What possible reason could they have for doing this?

Destroying everyone, and everything. Culture, arts, sports, people, healthcare facilities, places of recreation, religious venues, children, babies, families.

Edited

As one of them said "wipe them out and leave no memory of them".

I also read a report in relation to this terror attack that the IDF have taken over a part of the church. There isn't a single cm in Gaza that is safe 😭

stormy4319trevor · 16/12/2023 19:18

@feralunderclass Yes, maybe they wanted the church for a strategic position, But I can't see any reason to shoot at people. It's a desecration to Christians, of course, to kill inside a church, and particularly at Christmas time. But Christians are a minority in Gaza and the West Bank, and I sometimes feel the media and politicians pay little attention to them. Layla Moran will be able to bring some attention to them hopefully.

there's been a lot of desecration the last few days - bombing mosques, graveyards overturned, unethically using the PA system in a mosque they had taken over. Now a Christian church and shooting women. 😥
