Conflict in the Middle East

“Pause” ends tomorrow. Anyone else filled with dread ?

Just that really. I’ve felt such relief the past couple of days that my phone won’t be filled with a constant stream of murdered Palestinian kids and wailing parents. That all ends tomorrow and I have such a sense of foreboding even though I’m safe and comfortable thousands of miles away. I can’t begin to imagine the dread the Palestinians in Gaza must be feeling tonight knowing their genocide resumes tomorrow. When will it end 😞

@EasterIssland we know about these children. The biggest question is will Hamas back down, accept the right of Israel to exist and reconciliation can begin (hopefully with different leaders in charge on both sides). Those children will then be able to live peaceful, happy lives next to their Israeli peers.

"We know about these children".
I can't imagine such a blase comment about the Israeli children affected by this conflict would be accepted if someone said this to you.
The actions of Hamas do not mean the IDF can kill these children. The killing of the tens of thousands of children in Gaza was carried out by them and their bombs. They are not acceptable collateral damage because Hamas is apparently hiding everywhere. Whether they are or not, how dare they target buildings such as hospitals. Even if there were terrorists hiding there, which has not been confirmed either way, it's not justified. Not at all.
Acts of terror are being met by further acts of terror. It solves nothing.

Zionism is not evil. It is the response to evil. Zionism is the belief in the historic homeland of the Jews - where they came from & where they can return from all the places they have been persecuted & expelled. Zionism does not inevitably lead to the loss of a Palestinian homeland. Hamas, Hezbollah & Iran, on the other hand have clearly stated their intention to destroy Israel & all Jews. Netanyahu is another matter & he has strong opposition in Israel.

Accusing everyone of being blinded by anti-Israel rhetoric is a sweeping generalisation.
I am concerned for civilians regardless of where they live, but Gaza is hell right now and there is literally nowhere safe to hide once the fighting starts again. No shelters, even hospitals aren't off-limits. No medical supplies, limited amounts of basics, after a period of not even having fresh water, which may well happen again.
It's terrifying for everyone in the vicinity, and the humanitarian crisis cannot continue.

Why are there no shelters for gazans? Because Hamas didn't build them. Israel protects its citizens. Why no supplies? Hamas didn't buy them. Hamas is a rich organisation with vast wealth offshore much if it diverted aid. Hamas doesn't care - why is this so hard to grasp? When Hamas attacked Israel they knew what would happen. Any country would fight back after such an atrocity. Yet they made no plans to protect their civilians.

@PurpleChrayne absolutely. It’s also possible to completely defend the right of Israel to exist, to defend itself exactly how other countries would do (which invariably ends up with babies, children and women, aka innocent people being injured and killed in the crossfire) and to mourn those people from both sides who’ve lost their lives. All we seem to hear is about big bad bully Israel whilst the behaviour perpetrated by oh so oppressed Hamas is conveniently being brushed under the carpet. Don’t know what the answer is to this whole depressing situation but the pretty constant demonisation of one side against another really isn’t helping.

Other countries don't "defend" themselves like Israel though. Other countries at the very least allow people to leave. They don't pen them in, deny them food, water and medicine and bomb the living shit out of them, even in places they told them were safe.

Even you must realise that Israel has killed more children than any recent conflict and the numbers of civilians killed is outrageous, never mind displacing well over a million people.

You can't be such a bad person that you don't see that what they're doing is wrong?

roarrfeckingroar · 27/11/2023 20:51

Is the OP and others losing sleep over Yemeni children dying? Uighurs? Or just those being killed by Israel's actions?

do you lose your sleep as well about those actions or only about the Israel citizens ?

I don’t think many posters on here find it hard to grasp that Hamas don’t care, I think it’s pretty fecking obvious they don’t care about the safety of the Palestinian people. It still doesn’t make what Israel is doing acceptable.

Deliberately attacking citizens is a war crime.
Attacking indiscriminately is a war crime.
Punishing civilians is a war crime.
Dropping white phosphorus bombs is a war crime.
Denying or withholding humanitarian assistance is a war crime.

The Israeli government and military is committing war crimes. And just for good measure in case your reply is ‘what about Hamas’, they have committed horrific atrocities too and I revile them.

When are Hamas planning to release the rest of their hostages? And stop firing rockets into Israel?

Well said, of course you'll get jumped on. It is a valid question though. Hamas can help make this stop.

I am full of dread as well. Might need a bit of help to get to sleep tonight.

Why? Do you live in gaza? Or just being bloody dramatic 🙄

Yes, I’ve struggled for years to cope with the many injustices around the world and at home. It’s why I donate to 3 charities monthly, it’s why I volunteer at my local food bank, it’s why I organise charity events at my place of work, it’s why I probably annoy my friends with all my talk of ‘politics’. I constantly despair about the state of humanity and how people can care so little about other people’s suffering! Everyone should care about children dying around the world, no matter what country they are in!

Yet Palestinians who were forced out during the nakba of 1948 and their descendents do not have this same right to return to their homeland

Cattiwampus · 27/11/2023 16:13

Why would the IDF stop?
What are the consequences for Israel if they do or don’t?
The only thing that might extend the pause is if Hamas have hostages to barter, when that ends, so will the pause.

A repeat of 7/10, continuation of firing rockets into Israel, stabbings, bombs all spring readily to mind.

This is the only conclusion, sadly. Its so deeply, deeply depressing. Thousands dying in Darfur, and barely a mention.

When I said something to the same effect on the antisemitism thread, asking why people aren't this offended by islamaohobia I got asked if I'm the type that would say "all lives matter" during the BLM marches

We will blame Israel for Israel actions
if your partner punches you does that mean you can kill their mum and blame your husband when the police arrests you? Nope. Well here is the same. Blame Israel for killing Gazans during the war as well as for all the actions prior 7-10

Is there any proof that they’re murdering criminals ? Is there any record of the court claiming they’re murdering criminals? 🤔

Must be a terrible feeling for those released from Israeli jails. To think they're "freedom" has cost so many people their lives.
And its still not the end

They don't give a ....

Katy231 · 27/11/2023 21:23

I didn't feel any more relieved when this "pause" was announced. I think it's clear that the Israeli government will resume their heavy bombing and will probably increase it!
