Thank you no this is eons ago! It’s always stuck with me though , the knowledge about Israel doing this. I didn’t realise it wasn’t common knowledge in the West - but my degree was based on Middle Eastern politics so I guess I was more interested in this than most - pre this awful war. Now I’m completely obsessed of course - the last time I really read deeply about it was during Rabin’s time.

It’s been known about much longer than that, pre dd i visited the region to meet a good friend who was living in the WB and working on a report about Palestinian children being held without trial. So that would have been pre 2005

That's really interesting. I'm sure there's alot of insight you can give the rest of us

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 19:35

Regarding those Palestinians who were released since the ceasefire and have since been re arrested in the West Bank - I wonder if Hamas will insist on their release again.

As you say @Parkingt111 arrests are widespread and indiscriminate. So I wonder if there was focus on them to re arrest.
We will never know of course, they will be charged for cheering or something

AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen · 27/11/2023 19:46

Apologies if some feel this is slightly off subject but thought you’d like to know

There is a
Hunger strike outside the White House
Calling for a Ceasefire.

Really humbled by these peoples dedication

@AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen That's amazing. I wonder if we will see that in other countries too. It will be further embarrassment to Biden.

Just seen on Twitter. It’s the letter from a mum of a girl that has been held hostage and released over the weekend. Thanking Hamas for the way they’ve treated her daughter whilst in captivity

Did she post this herself after release
Im just surprised she would be allowed to by Israel.

I saw this discussed earlier, I think. Basically it makes sense for Hamas to treat hostages well - they are an asset at the moment. It's a relief, as some on here thought they would all be murdered.

in the meantime in Palestine … seems like she’s in hospital after being beaten up on her way to release

I remember one of the hostages who was released at the beginning of the war saying that they were treated pretty well so I had hope. Not that Hamad were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts of course. As you say the hostages were useful to them.

EasterIssland · 27/11/2023 21:02

That might be true but shouldn’t idf treat those “arrested” well as well as as it’s the way to recover the hostages??

also some posters have been saying that some of the first released ones were saying lies (they treat me well) because they still had relatives in captivity when many once released are talking about the kindness that they were treated.

ps as I know I’m going to be acussed of anything. I agree with the mum that wrote the letter about her released daughter. Nobody should live under captivity but if you’re going to keep me hostage at least make it as easy as possible for me so that some of them don’t have traumas in the future

Utterly disgusted by this.
If this is what they do to children when the world can see.
Assaulted by Israeli Government backed forces ! So much that she needed hospitalisation. !
Imagine what happens to them whilst locked up and behind closed doors.

Posting extra info

I think the IDF have been given free reign
Either that or they are just stupid

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 21:18

The 11 Israeli captives have reached Israeli soil so the Palestinians should be making their way to freedom now
Just hoping they keep out of the West Bank to avoid re arrest

stormy4319trevor · 27/11/2023 21:41

@EasterIssland I heard a suggestion to call the people released from Israeli prisons 'captives.' Ir makes sense to me, because both 'prisoner' and 'detainee' are legal terns, and they haven't been through a legal process. So, the IDF don't see any need to look after their Palestinian captives well, because, even if they killed them all, they could arrest some more, I think. Whereas Hamas have a limited number of Israeli hostages, so they are of greater value.

I don’t think the IDF were tasked with recovering the hostages tbh. That seems to have been achieved via negotiation. The IDF was just there to bomb staff.

Rachna83 · 27/11/2023 22:00

Yes they shouldn't be called prisoners but rather they are hostages too. This is a war of words and a real drive to take away the humanity of the Palestinians. These are people with dreams, aspirations and hopes too. They are not just collateral that do not matter.

Rachna83 · 27/11/2023 22:06

If the Israeli hostages had been treated the way the Palestinians are there would be international outrage. The IDF however seem to do as they please.

stormy4319trevor · 27/11/2023 22:08

@Rachna83 I think that's why I can't call them all prisoners. It implies they are guilty of crimes - but we don't know that they are. It carries the sense of them being unworthy, lesser beings. Coupled with that, there is less attention given to their stories in the press, journalists are not allowed near, they are shot at and tear gassed when released, their relatives may not show joy. They are treated like vermin. And why? Because they are Palestinians.

I think I agree with captives as the best word to describe them. They are not really hostages because they are not being held captive to put pressure on Hamas or the PA to do anything. Rather it seems to be a form of intimidation and control.

I’m starting to think that maybe there is an apartheid after all. I have no idea how Arabs are treated if they are Israeli citizens but if they’re Palestinian they seem to have barely any rights at all.

Yes I understand your point. It is another form of control and suppression.
