Is Saleh the one who met some of the hostages in the tunnels?

I think that was Yahya Sinwar

Parkingt111 · 02/01/2024 21:38

The day after meeting that was supposed to happen in Israel this evening has been cancelled again.
And the US have responded to the inflammatory suggestions by right-wing ministers of displacing the Gazans saying they fully disagree with it

Parkingt111 · 02/01/2024 21:39

the US state department said in a statement on Tuesday:
This rhetoric is inflammatory and irresponsible. We have been told repeatedly and consistently by the government of Israel, including by the prime minister, that such statements do not reflect the policy of the Israeli government. They should stop immediately.

We have been clear, consistent, and unequivocal, that Gaza is Palestinian land and will remain Palestinian land, with Hamas no longer in control of its future and with no terror groups able to threaten Israel. That is the future we seek, in the interests of Israelis and Palestinians, the surrounding region, and the world.

Latest from Netanyahu on twitter

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has posted on X a number of hours ago about meeting families of the hostages who remain in Gaza, saying

“The effort is continuing. The contacts are being held; they have not been cut off. There was an ultimatum from Hamas; now it has been softened.”

Parkingt111 · 03/01/2024 15:00

@Efacsen to add to that Israeli intelligence minister is now calling openly for the emigration of the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip

https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-in-talks-with-congo-and-other-countries-on-gaza-voluntary-migration-plan

Parkingt111 · 03/01/2024 15:07

Gamliel said that Gaza must not be handed over to the Palestinian Authority, and Gazans must not be left in the Strip to be educated to hate, as that would mean that further attacks on Israel are only a matter of time. While rejecting the PA’s return, the government has offered few details on what political entity it wants to rule Gaza.
“The Gaza problem is not just our problem,” Gamliel said. “The world should support humanitarian emigration, because that’s the only solution I know.”

Parkingt111 · 03/01/2024 15:11

The 'voluntary emigration' in this instance is looking rather like a method of 'forced displacement

Forced displacement is an involuntary or coerced movement of a person or people away from their home or home region. The UNHCR defines 'forced displacement' as follows: displaced "as a result of persecution, conflict, generalized violence or human rights violations".

Just read this update:

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz has a few more details on new efforts to free hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
As we reported earlier, Israel’s security cabinet will discuss a deal mediated by Qatar to release all the Israeli hostages. Haaretz says the proposal would see hostages freed in several batches in exchange for safe passage out of Gaza into exile for Hamas leaders, and a retreat by the Israeli Defense Forces from the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli cabinet was meeting on Wednesday night, Haaretz said.
Separately, it reports that an Israeli delegation visited Cairo on Wednesday for discussions with Egyptian politicians on a possible swap of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel. It cites an Egyptian official.

Parkingt111 · 10/01/2024 20:59

If the first one goes through then does that indicate the end of the war too?

stomachameleon · 10/01/2024 21:31

@Parkingt111 I would like to think so.

stormy4319trevor · 10/01/2024 21:49

It sounds like it @Parkingt111 Though it would probably be a gradual process, I suppose.

There have been varying statements from Hamas politburo member Osama Hamden today though. Lots of conflicting information.

Parkingt111 · 10/01/2024 22:34

I haven't seen any hamas statements but I think any deals will probably be at initial stages right now
Both sides would have to agree on the basic framework before moving on to the finer details.
I do really hope and pray that a deal can be achieved that see's all the hostages being released, any innocent Palestinians detained released and an end to the war.

Efacsen · 11/01/2024 14:47

Latest from Qatar who deny that deportation of senior Hamas leaders is or ever has been part of any hostage negotiations

''The official added that “spreading false information may harm the sensitive negotiations that are still ongoing”.

Perhaps Israel will cut ties as Saudi Arabia, the UEA and Egypt have done?

Parkingt111 · 11/01/2024 19:25

@stomachamaleon if I'm honest I don't really know much about Qatar, its only after they have been involved with negotiations etc that I have seen abit more

In terms of ties I did see that Saudi may want to normalise after the war but on the condition of a two state solution
But it was a skim read so I'm not sure if there was more to it

Interesting interview from a family member of one of the hostages. She believes that the Israeli government doesn't want to rescue the hostages. She says her government is enacting upon the hostages the Hannibal directive.

Efacsen · 27/01/2024 09:22

@inkworks273 IDK about the Hannibal directive but it's shocking to realise that it's over 8 weeks since the last hostages were released alive

And how much peril they have been in during that time

inkworks273 · 27/01/2024 09:27

@Efacsen Yes, I don't think the hosts of the show agreed with everything she said but it was refreshing to see them allow her to have her say without shouting her down. I feel like that's what would have happened on UK tv.
