I think the term truce is used as from the start it was made clear that it would be temporary (unfortunately) however I believe there is a push for it to become a permanent ceasefire but at this moment in time I can't see it happening

The US have just said more along the lines of Israel needs to take more care not to kill civilians if the truce ends but how effective is just saying that?

The Israeli military spokesperson said he sees the war continuing for another two months and I dread to think what would happen to the remaining civilians and the state of Gaza if that happens

I agree I’m not convinced Biden can do much and I do wonder if he’s just paying lip service to his people and the wider world.
However a Hamas spokesman agrees he carries the weight to stop the war.

Biden has to ‘say’ it but it doesn’t mean a great deal. All the bombs and planes used are supplied by the US and there has been no halt in this supply.
Hes paying lip service to the public….

However a Hamas spokesmen has commented Biden has the ability to stop the war

Qatar has just announced 5 planes of aid being sent to Gaza.
Excellent news !

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 16:56

Confirmation that the truce has indeed been extended by 2 days.

With a further 20 Israelis and 60 Palestinians to be released along with further aid as prior agreement.

Fantastic

Thekirit · 27/11/2023 17:04

A further 2 days also allows respite for Gaza
without bombs or fighting to allow Palestinians to find and bury their dead and get some food, water and medical aid. ( I’m assuming they have access to some now )This is great news.

But what then.
As many news agencies are asking.- what about the elephant in the room.
Will all hell break loose after?

Rachna83 · 27/11/2023 17:33

I'm glad aid is getting through and there is some respite for the people of gaza. I was watching a video of the children saying it was so nice not having drones in the sky and they were playing in the sea. They were so happy. I really hope and pray there is a determined effort and external pressure to make this a permanent ceasefire.

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 17:49

Three names so far of Palestinians to be released
Two adult women - Yasmine Shaaban and Etaf Jaradat ( who has been on hunger strikes due to conditions in prison )
Nufouth Hamad is also to be released she was 14 when arrested in 2021 for painting the Palestinian flag on children’s faces during a celebration

A further, so far, unnamed 30 children are to be released

I saw them playing in the sea and sand aswel
A moment of respite, it must real amazing for them.

I have asked to change thread title to 'detainees, truce, agreements' to better reflect the focus of the thread. Thanks all for your suggestions.

Nufouth Hamad was imprisoned for 2 years for face painting?! Was she ever charged with anything, do you know?

@Rachna83 Amazingly resilient children. I'm glad they can still play, maybe that's a testament to the love of their families, that they are still able to laugh.

She was imprisoned for longer plus a large fine.
They are letting her out early
Yes she was charged with painting the Palestinian flag on faces during a celebration.

promise I am not making this up …. ridiculous

stormy4319trevor · 27/11/2023 18:19

The Guardian has a correspondent at Ramallah, which is good. There's a short interview on their live feed feed with Fairuz Fayez Mahmoud Al-Bu. She was arrested for allegedly stabbing an Israeli , and has been held for more than 2 years without charge or trial. Sorry, not sure how to link.

Probably because they are speaking a lot about the little children. It makes people more sensitive if people change the subject onto something else.

A lot of the detainees are children as well though. That’s precisely what makes it kind of horrifying.

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 18:33

I do wonder how long some of them have been locked up without charge or trial.
I know it’s 6months then they can extend another 6 months and so on.
Does Tipton really make a difference when they don’t seem to have legal representation and are charged in a military jail.
One has to wonder, what’s the point there’s nothing just in that form of justice.

That’s 13 years just since this report
Of course they will have known about it for far longer. We know of arrested kids and their conditions well before that

But we, the UK govn supports this or at least supports a Govn that carry out these atrocities.
with full knowledge.
!!!!!!

how incredibly sad more cannot be released

Thekirit · 27/11/2023 18:49

Just imagining a mumsnet thread about

“my dd got a detention for face painting.”

YANBU 100%

Kaffeebitte · 27/11/2023 19:19

It’s been known about much longer than that, pre dd i visited the region to meet a good friend who was living in the WB and working on a report about Palestinian children being held without trial. So that would have been pre 2005

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 19:25

This was on the BBC today about one of the released detainees

Among those freed so far is 17-year-old Wissam Tamimi, who was arrested in the occupied West Bank in June.
His cousin Janna Jihad told BBC Radio 4 earlier today that when she collected him from prison he had lost weight and it was clear he had not slept for days. He began vomiting shortly after his release, she said.
Jihad added that Tamimi had not had any formal charges laid against him since his arrest, but was accused of what she called "random" things such as throwing rocks and attending demonstrations.
Asked if this was typical, she said: "Most of my friends and cousins and all the children around me have gotten arrested at one time in their life."
The Israeli Defense Forces directed BBC questions about his case to the Israeli prison service, who have not responded to a request for comment.

That doesn’t surprise me.
I do hope your friend is OK if they are still in the West Bank, given the increased activity by the IDF there since the ceasefire started.

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 19:26

What was more shocking though was they said a quarter of the population of the west bank had at some point spent time in Israeli prison!

A whole quarter of the population!

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 19:28

With administrative detention it seems they don't have to prove that a crime was committed hence such a large amount of people including minors spending time in prison from the occupied West bank

Readingallnight · 27/11/2023 19:29

This from a father of his son arrested when he was 16.

One of the women released on the first day said “ wha5 happens to the girls in jail no one wants to talk about”

I think they must have been threatened as very little is coming out though.
