@Efacsen agreed

She's the deputy PM of the Netherlands and will be taking up the post on 8th Jan - no hurry then!

Who knows what will happen about a visa after the Israeli ambassadors speech following the UN vote and then today

''Israel will no longer grant automatic visas to United Nations employees, after accusing the global body of being “complicit partners” in Hamas’s tactics.

Absolutely outrageous. But in line with their policy to cut all comms, kill all journalists and now I guess refuse access to independent global actors who might call out their human rights abuses.

It's actually terrifying.

Efacsen · 27/12/2023 10:19

I've no idea so asking here - does Ms Raag need to live in Israel? She maybe could live in Egypt and fly to Tel Aviv for face to face meetings

Israeli gov not co-operating with her and/or refusing her entry into Gaza would be bigger issues

Ah just seen that even tho' it's only about 80 miles it takes 10+ hours as planes not allowed in Israeli airspace

Cyprus is further away but much shorter flight and the EU aid corridor from there is getting closer to happening

.

King Abdullah of Jordan is meeting Sisi in Egypt today
I'm not sure if this could be the start of another proposal

BelleHathor · 27/12/2023 12:48

Sisi better hold the line and not agree to the Sinai Plan just because he won re-election last week.

That $20 billion in debt relief will be the most costly mistake for the region if he accepts it.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 13:03

I don't think he will. That's one thing he has been firm on since the start of the war.
Although my personal view is that there needs to be more evacuations happening for those who want to leave and for those who are injured which currently stands at around 50 thousand.

Sisi is corrupt to the core. I wouldn't trust him to have the best interests of the Palestinians. Whatever he does will be according to what will work out best for him

".. After Israeli soldiers filmed UN-labelled boxes in a Gaza house containing rockets this month, Israel’s ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan accused the organisation of being “a direct accomplice in terror”. The UNRWA has repeatedly denied such claims. " https://on.ft.com/3TBFjgb
I am not surprised Israel feels the UN is biased against Israel.

Hopefully as self serving as he is. He realises that it's a trap.

I can't believe you believe that 🤣

stomachamaleon · 27/12/2023 13:39

Aid has been stolen by Hamas and deprived others.
Unwra has been caught before turning a blind eye to things.
I can understand Israel's reticence to see them as non bias.

Efacsen · 27/12/2023 13:40

Article from FT is very even-handed and not reflected in @Xenia scare quote

Re-purposing of UN boxes? Not the UNs fault

Efacsen · 27/12/2023 13:42

El Sisi standing firm so far

The social media account of King Abdullah II has issued a statement after the meeting between Jordan’s king and the Egyptian president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in Cairo.

It said the pair “stress their complete rejection of all attempts to liquidate the Palestinian issue and forcibly displace Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. His majesty and Egypt’s president call on the world to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the uninterrupted delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza, to ease the tragic situation and the suffering of people in the strip.”

The statement added that “the two leaders note the international community’s immense political and ethical responsibility towards implementing UN security council and general assembly resolutions, in order to maintain the integrity of these international entities.”

stomachamaleon · 27/12/2023 13:49

I don't blame them due to past experience. However they wrap it up neither will be keen to go down that round again. Jordan had a king assassinated by the Palestinians in the 1950s. They were on the cusp on really doing something peace wise and were stabbed in the back.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 13:58

@Efacsen yes a ceasefire is badly needed right now
For the release of hostages and humanatarian aid
Until a ceasefire is not agreed on I can't see any way forward

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 13:59

I agree with what they both have said
The bloodshed has to stop now
You cannot bomb an ideology into submission

Efacsen · 27/12/2023 15:18

@Parkingt111 Agree

That the UN has lost its power and meaning is beyond sad. I really hope it is restored. And I do think that only by taking them seriously we can restore it. Humankind most definitively needs an observer, aid supplier and trusted neutral ground, with the human rights declaration as their only engine.
If a strong UN could actually prevent the smuggling of arms, prevent the misuse and stealing of aid, prevent the use of tunnels, get their representatives to any country without the need of a visa and so on, it would help in sorting this conflict and many others. But sadly, even with them present there, all these guns, tunnels, training and extreme violence have happened ( also more than puzzled as how the israeli defence failed to realise how many weapons were in the area). And now, many many deaths later, they are discussing the wording of an estatement.
I do hope that the UN takes a role in the post war, trying to form a interim political representation for Gaza till they are in a situation to vote for one. Because I do not think that Hamas should continue to represent them, or anyone, ever. I do acknowledge that not all the members of Hamas will be involved in this and so they can join other parties. And I think Gaza and West Bank do need a common strong party that can lead them into a final agreement with Israel and a full independant country.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 18:26

@Stomacharmeleon The UN like all other organisations and leaders who have had any part in this war certainly has its shortcomings. and I understand some of the Israeli concerns aswell as the Palestinian ones regarding the UN but I wouldn't call them useless. Without them things would be alot worse right now

floodlightonwhatisright · 27/12/2023 21:21

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 13:59

I agree with what they both have said

All Hamas has to do is to release the hostages.
There will obviously be no ceasefire until this is done. I do not support a ceasefire until all hostages are released as the program and hostages caused this war.

Once the hostages are all released, I will support a ceasefire and demand it too.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 21:35

@floodlightonwhatisright if you want to know what I think then that is Hamas should release the hostages unconditionally, not based on a pause or ceasefire or aid or anything else because they shouldn't have taken them in the first place and because no innocent person deserves to suffer.

However they have said that they won't release the hostages unless there is a full ceasefire.
And Israel hasn't actually said that there will be a ceasefire if the hostages are released as the aims of the war will not have been completed.

But I think there is a much greater chance of the hostages being released if it is negotiated based on a ceasefire. You may disagree but that is just my own view.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 22:09

So essentially we both sort of want the same thing but just the order in which it happens.
I would also like you want Hamas to release the hostages regardless but realistically right now it doesn't seem like it's going to happen unless there is a ceasefire negotiated.

And ofcourse to stop the horrendous impact on the Gazan civilians which is something I struggle alot to even try and comprehend. I don't think I would last a day in their shoes.
And to end the rocket fire into Israel.

Efacsen · 28/12/2023 11:08

OMG what are the 'useless' UN doing now!!

5000000 food parcels delivered to starving people in Gaza over the last few days

Whatever will they do next!!!!!

Efacsen · 28/12/2023 11:54

Hope the 'useless' UN were very careful disposing of UN-marked packaging and boxes from the food parcels lest Hamas use them to transport rockets

Or a passing IDF photographer uses them for set-dressing
