'If Prime Minister Netanyahu has in the past flirted with commitment to a two-state future, the opening paragraph of the government’s guidelines document — a non-legally binding but public expression of priorities — leaves no room for ambivalence: “The Jewish people have an exclusive and inalienable right to all parts of the Land of Israel.” The document further includes a commitment to promoting and developing settlement accordingly, to explicitly include the West Bank'

The government currently is a coalition with the far right and extreme and whilst they are there peace will be very difficult.

What Does Israel’s New Government Mean for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict?

As 2022 came to a close, Benjamin Netanyahu once again took the helm of Israel’s government just 18 months after losing power in the wake of a series of stalemated elections. Already Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, Netanyahu’s approach to fore...

That means almost 2/3 of the released 'prisoners' were being detained in prison without charge??

It also says that the government refused to disclose figures on how many they have detained from Gaza.

168 Palestinians have been detained in the West Bank since the start of the truce. Some of them are the very same people released in the last few days.

150 have been released from Israeli jails.

So they have arrested more than given back.

Are these people hostages or criminals.

Yes.
Yesterday Israel announced a huge budget for the expansion of Illegal settlers.

Isee MN have changed the title
Thankyou @stormy4319trevor
Im sure we, here, can discuss everything with respect and without attacks and hate.
This should avoid further derailment as I noticed some popped over here ( after the Israeli hostage release and prior to the release of Palestinians ) to have exactly the same conversation that was going on on the ‘other’ thread in order to derail this thread…..again!
Well done to those who asked for respect and to leave.

Rachna83 · 28/11/2023 12:52

If they continue to expand settlements and expel Palestinians by force how can that be conducive to peace? All of this feeds in to the bigger picture.

It is so hard with some of these threads that just descend into chaos where no one is actually listening to each other but just hurling their point across with increasing amount of insult and abuse.

Well exactly.
The timing of the announcement has been condemned.
However it’s not really about timing is it.
It shows clearly exactly what the plan is.

Settlers aided by the IDF have been expelling, beating and shooting at Palestinians in order to take their property whilst the ceasfire has been ongoing.
There have been Many reports that this has increased, in fact, during the ceasefire.
I suppose the IDF have got nothing else to do.

Agree
It is very sad that the two threads have been separated. It’s like apartheid on MN
Informed and polite discussion was great in the first thread on this subject.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the case with the second thread.

We can all seek an end to this war without hurling abuse

Netanyahu is and has always been an entirely negative force in Israeli politics. There were weekly protests against him until Oct 7. I don’t know enough about Israel to know if he is weaker or stronger now .

Guessing that’s why he went to Gaza yesterday?
To try to improve his popularity
He will want to ‘win’ this, whatever the cost.

It’s so very sad.

Parkingt111 · 28/11/2023 14:42

It seems both sides have said that each other broke the ceasefire

This was from the guardian
Over the last hour, three explosive devices were detonated adjacent to IDF troops in two different locations in the northern Gaza Strip, violating the framework of the operational pause. In one of the locations, terrorists also opened fire at the troops, who responded with fire.

A number of soldiers were lightly injured during the incidents. In both incidents, the troops were located in positions as per the framework of the operational pause. The claims have not been independently verified.
Earlier, an AFP journalist reported that they saw an Israeli tank fire three times in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City as Palestinians attempted to make use of the lull to return to their homes. Reuters reports that a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said of that incident: “After suspects approached IDF troops, an IDF tank fired a warning shot.”

He definitely wants to paint this as a win. Was just reading Israel's chief of staff talking about how military pressure created conditions for hostages to be returned. Is it just me, or wasn't there a deal suggested weeks ago? I thought, at the time, it was refused because Netanyahu wouldn't negotiate with terrorists?

This seems likely to be the next steps to diffuse the situation according to sky

Under the agreement, the mechanism to settle the conflicting claims should be that Israel and Hamas go to mediator Qatar, which will try and resolve it, he says.
Waghorn says there will likely not be any progress on the release of more hostages or Palestinian prisoners until that process is complete.
"Presumably, [Qatar] will try and work out why it happened, was it an accident - that these explosions happened by mistake - or was it deliberate, and then try and defuse the tensions and put the ceasefire back in place."
It's a "classic case" of one say side saying "they started it" and the other side saying, "no, you started it", Waghorn says.

Readingallnight · 28/11/2023 14:47

This…attached!
Who did what when how…….who knows?

Hamas formally agreed to the extended 2 day truce
Israel did not formally agree to the extended two day truce

I dare say everyone could argue till they’re long in the tooth but meanwhile the release of innocents hangs in the balance and the loss of further life if fighting starts again when discussions are under way to stop this war stretches the agony for many.

stormy4319trevor · 28/11/2023 14:47

@Parkingt111 It sounds like the Israeli shells were reported by AFP before the detonations and firing at IDF? That's how I read it. I hope the truce can hold.

Parkingt111 · 28/11/2023 14:48

@stormy4319trevor I don't know but it seems its in the advantage of both sides if the truce holds

Where are you seeing the timeline of activity @stormy4319trevor
I can’t get that

Readingallnight · 28/11/2023 14:52

@Parkingt111 the truce would have to hold indefinitely for any real advantage to the Palestinians in Gaza and would need to be extended to the West Bank aswell

stormy4319trevor · 28/11/2023 14:52

@Parkingt111 It says the explosives and firing were in the last hour, then states that 'earlier' AFP had reported Israeli tanks firing. Maybe I'm wrong, but suggests the IDF firing came first.

OP posts:
stormy4319trevor · 28/11/2023 14:55

@Readingallnight I was just looking at the report posted by @Parkingt111 at 14.42 I gauged that the Hamas aggression was reported in the last hour and that the IDF aggression was reported as 'earlier'. What do you think, is that sloppy wording or is it suggesting a time scale?

Thanks.
I thought maybe it was on Twitter or something that I don’t have.
Seems a good analogy to me.

Tbh whilst, we don’t know, I’d say Israel should have been forced to formally agree to this extended truce…one has to ask why didn’t they.
Maybe now we have the answer
Hope Qatar can get to the bottom of this asap

Readingallnight · 28/11/2023 15:02

Especially as Qatar reported ( earlier or possibly yesterday ) it was Israel that was resisting the extension to the truce

stormy4319trevor · 28/11/2023 15:03

Absolutely, it's troubling they did not formally agree. There's a lot of international good will towards a truce - it's getting hostages out and aid in. So, hopefully it will hold.

@stormy4319trevor I'm not sure which one was reporter first on this

@Efacsen do you happen to know?

Readingallnight · 28/11/2023 15:50

This from the Jerusalem post
No real confirmation of ‘who started it’ though.
