At least a bit of good news in the darkness:

Israel's cabinet has approved a deal with Hamas to secure the release of 50 hostages being held in Gaza.

The hostages will be released over a four-day pause in fighting, a statement from the Israeli prime minister's office says.

Under the deal, the release of every additional 10 hostages will extend the pause in fighting by one day.

The deal was approved by Israel's cabinet after a lengthy meeting that ran into the early hours of Wednesday.

@bookworm14 it's really odd. And cruel. Particularly to the very young children.

I’m sure there is a lot we aren’t being told, but it does seem cruel. I keep thinking of poor Emily Hand, as she is the same age as my DD. Do hope she is released in the next group.

I feel the same about Abigail Idan. Orphaned by Hamas and one her own. I agree that's huge amounts we don't know and I think that's no bad thing.

And meanwhile a Palestinian who carried out a knife attack on a police officer walks free...
