At least a bit of good news in the darkness:

Israel's cabinet has approved a deal with Hamas to secure the release of 50 hostages being held in Gaza.

The hostages will be released over a four-day pause in fighting, a statement from the Israeli prime minister's office says.

Under the deal, the release of every additional 10 hostages will extend the pause in fighting by one day.

The deal was approved by Israel's cabinet after a lengthy meeting that ran into the early hours of Wednesday.

@eardefender
they're not interested in understanding who Hamas are because if they did try to really understand and do some actual reading, it would overturn their entrenched israelophobic, antisemitic views.

This.

Can I remind people that a 3 year old- Abigail- is hopefully being released tomorrow. Both her parents were murdered and someone picked her up and took her hostage. A three year old.

This.

Stomacharmeleon · 23/11/2023 10:06

Yeah no one picked up on that post @XRAYTHIS with all the hand wringing and emotive hyperbole. Funny that?

Unfortunately it isn't a unique situation in this conflict. Many children have had both parents murdered, some their entire extended family. Many children are alone and displaced. Hopefully a ceasefire will be called soon and all of the children left traumatised and orphaned will be able to receive the help that they deserve.

Well that's the whole point. There's no point trying to reason with someone who posts the type of thing you've just posted. I've given up.

There is nothing @localnotail said that was inaccurate.

Stomacharmeleon · 23/11/2023 15:03

@OuiOuiKitty it's unique for Abigail.

50 hostages will be released
backtowinter · 23/11/2023 15:27

@Toothyfruity That post from @localnotail was perfectly factual

I'm not sure why it merited a ride response

Kool aid?? What does that even mean?

Sure, if you want to phrase it that way it is unique for every child left orphaned and traumatised. Like I said, I hope a ceasefire is called soon and every child effected receives the help they deserve. No child deserves to lose their parents and be left alone 🙏

Fladdermus · 23/11/2023 15:29

I was really shocked today translating a Swedish report into English. I didn't know that one of the complications of negotiating the release of the hostages is that they weren't all taken by Hamas. Some of them were taken by Islamic Jihad and others were taken by groups of civilians.

@Fladdermus which calls into question the Palestinians are not Hamas narrative.

Wow, I didn't realise. So another terrorist organisation is involved and also Palestinian people.

This is not a point scoring competition.

There is so much squabbling and whataboutery on here. No wonder so many threads become echo chambers.

Islamic jihad
It was also well spoken about at the time of the massacre that more 'general population' got involved than people would like to admit.
The treatment of shani louk showed that.

What happened to her did make me realise that many in the general population are involved. The celebration around the world was frankly sickening to see. Who celebrates rape.

Stomacharmeleon · 23/11/2023 16:00

@OuiOuiKitty do you know what unique means?
It literally is unique to this conflict that a three year old who was being help by her dad watched her parents murdered then was taken hostage and driven back into Gaza. And has been held since then. Whilst the only surviving members of her family (her siblings) hid in a closet for 12 hours.
Unique.

No, not at all. Which is why I was including every child, not just 1 in my post. Every child matters, that's why a ceasefire is so important.

Yes, every child in Gaza and a few in Israel have a unique traumatising story. Like xray said this is not a competition, I'm not sure why you are pushing it into one tbh?

I don't think that's fair if it's based on a report that shows a 100 or so civilians compared to the population of 2.3 million. That wouldn't even equal to 1% of the general population. They are also victims in this war
Also there's no way of knowing how many in there were Hamas or other groups dressed in civilian clothing.
I am also interested to know where its reported that some hostages are being held by normal civilians as I haven't seen that anywhere.
Has that been verified? I know it wasn't you who mentioned it but generally asking if you know

I'm surprised to hear Sweden has reported on anything even remotely negative about Palestinians at all 🙈
(I'm Swedish, and my experiences as a Jew in Sweden weren't exactly great - did you read about Malmö stadsbibliotek the other day? It didn't even remotely surprise me)

"and a few in Israel" 🙄 utterly pathetic. How many Israeli children do you think have been affected by this most recent conflict? You seem to think it's only the ones who have been kidnapped who are traumatised for life?

I didn't say only the ones who have been kidnapped are traumatised for life? I'm not sure why you are putting words in my mouth and calling me pathetic but if it makes you feel good about yourself then 🤷🏻‍♀️, I've better things to do than argue with aggressive posters on mumsnet.

Stomacharmeleon · 23/11/2023 16:24

@OuiOuiKitty because my original post was about Abigail. And instead of just acknowledging what I said you did the classic 'whataboutery'.
