It's so shameful that even Macron has the decency to call this out and our own PM is still silent

Quite! For Macron to say that you’ve gone too far against the Muslims is also quite something. Makes his hijab ban look like MuslimHateLite.exe

Some other countries have been calling it out for quite a while. Countries like Ireland and Belgium have no power though so it is great that a powerful country like France is standing up and saying enough. Germany, the US and the UK need to follow suit now.

Bingo. At the beginning of All this eu wanted to remove financial support from Gaza. Luckily a few countries said no way! Ireland and Spain between them. Who have been really critical with the Israel government.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 10/11/2023 21:56

Ireland's politicians have spoken out, they are not the only ones others have as well.

And I'm sick of people commenting oh get Hamas to stop hiding behind the women and children. We know Hamas are awful but the Palestinian infants, children, women and innocent civilians are not hamas - the Palestinians are deal with the brutality and genocide by Israle and also suffering from Hamas sacrificing them.

Why isn't Macron calling on Hamas to stop hiding behind Gaza's women and babies?

He visited Israel a few weeks ago, said that the international effort against ISIS should be expanded to include fighting Hamas and that France was ready to be involved in that. He said the fight against Hamas should be "without mercy but not without rules", and has been strong in his condemnation of Hamas's terrorism. He met with the families of hostages and said that getting hostages back should be a first priority, he called Hamas threatening to execute hostages odious and unacceptable. His government also banned pro-Palestinian protests.

I think his opinion of Hamas and their actions is pretty clear.

Yup, the EU lost their minds in the beginning. I don't know what Ursula was thinking going over there and giving her support when some EU countries were opposed to it. Almost a month ago Ireland upped it's aid for 2023 to Palestine by 13million to bring the total to 29million. I'm glad countries like Ireland and Spain aren't screaming into a void anymore but it is incredibly frustrating that it took so long and so many deaths for some countries to see what was obvious to others right from the very start.

Ireland and Spain have put the U.K. leadership to shame over the last few weeks.
I’d like to see the Palestinian flag projected on to Downing St in solidarity with Palestinians who have lost their lives because of the Israeli terrorists that Sunak so earnestly wanted to win. There was an instant response to the massacre on 7.10 but nothing in response to the retaliatory genocide. Islamophobia in action.

Why isn't Macron calling on Hamas to stop hiding behind Gaza's women and babies?

And why is he calling for a ceasefire from Israel and not both of them?

Interesting though that he should insist such a thing would "benefit Israel" without apparently considering what would happen if Hamas regroups ...

fireworksmyass · 10/11/2023 22:12

@EasterIssland it's true it affects his family's pockets

Parkingt111 · 10/11/2023 22:18

From sky news
When asked if he wanted other leaders - including in the US and the UK - to join his calls for a ceasefire, Mr Macron said: "I hope they will."

Roste · 10/11/2023 22:21

@EasterIssland so when Sunak shimmied into the spotlight with Netanyahu and said ‘we want you to win’ the ‘we’ was his family firm.

Parkingt111 · 10/11/2023 22:23

I think it's largely because the UK simply follows the US. I don't think its to do with his family, even if we had a different Conservative PM the stance would have been the same
But if tomorrow Biden calls for a ceasefire you can bet Rishi will too

notimagain · 10/11/2023 22:24

@Puzzledandpissedoff

And why is he calling for a ceasefire from Israel and not both of them?

No idea of what his thinking is today but FWIW President Macron has been very scathing of Hamas in other speeches over the last few weeks.

It also might be worth being aware that unlike some other administrations the French government has banned outright any pro-Palestinian marches or demonstrations....

This short piece is about a month old but it may provide context:

Macron calls for unity in France after Hamas attacks

France has some of the largest Muslim and Jewish populations in Europe.

Parkingt111 · 10/11/2023 22:26

France's stance on the war since the start has always been pro Israel with full unwavering support
To see Macron say such a bold statement and criticism is certainly not something I would have expected
It just goes to show how terrible the situation in Gaza is, if even Macron is saying so

sunshinesupermum · 10/11/2023 22:26

A humanitarian pause means Hamas has the opportunity to regroup and send more rockets over to Israel, something that MSM fails to report TakeMe2Insanity.

SingleDadReally · 10/11/2023 22:34

Oh you can as far as I’m concerned. People are under the impression Israel is some sort of cuddly liberal democracy like any Western European country, but it’s actually a racist apartheid state who’s aim is never to allow the creation of a Palestinian state. At the moment it’s involved in a campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Its government contains a convicted terrorist and a KKK style supremacist who declares himself to be a fascist. In the West Bank violent settlers frequently intimidate and kill Palestinian villagers with the support of the Israeli army and government (10,000 assault rifles were purchased to give to settlers). If you want to know where this is going just ask what happened to the native population of North America or the Aborigines in Australia.

Roste · 10/11/2023 22:39

@Parkingt111 I agree but the phrase ‘we want you to win’ was unnecessary. We know U.K. leaders like to try and be important by tagging along with whatever the US say, but there was something not quite right about Sunak’s obsequious support of the Israeli government.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/11/2023 22:39

I know, @notimagain (and thank you for the link) which is why Macron's current stance seems a bit surprising - especially, as said, because of the things he didn't mention

hulahello · 10/11/2023 22:40

Well done macron. Hopefully others will follow his lead.

Hotchocolatemousse · 10/11/2023 22:41

doubleshift · 10/11/2023 21:34

Problem is you can't criticise Israel without being labelled anti-Semitic.

The two issues are entrenched and the Israeli government is very good at PR. Any criticism of them is repackaged as anti semitism, some even regard the Palestinian flag as a terrorist flag. That's how successful they are in controlling the narrative to their advantage.

It suits Netanyahu to continue the war as it detracts scrutiny from his dodgy record in office. He wants to be remembered as the president who took down Hamas and as a war hero. So the longer he can stretch out this war the better for him.

Now we've got a Home Secretary who apparently has a relative in the IDF so figure that one out. This nutcase, the home secretary, also has the power to curb our right to proteat. She's doing a smashing good job of it so far.....

Parkingt111 · 10/11/2023 22:44

@Puzzledandpissedoff personally I find it more worrying than surprising.
If even Macron is now saying this then it means things on the ground must be alot worse than we know
There's also been calls on the ICC to issue warrants for members of the Israeli military and army for 'indiscriminate bombing of urban areas' all these countries are now worried on how they will have been seen as complicit in this

Justanotherlurker · 10/11/2023 22:47

Macron is thinking on geopolitical lines and trying to calm things down in France, it isn't something that is pro gaza, it is wanting things in france to cool down.

This isn't the win you think it is, it is because of the 'peaceful protests' to a conflict ~4000 miles away and trying to somewhat calm them down with having gone through multiple terrorist attacks and obvious rise in anti-Semitism.

There is a lot of chatter on french SM of comparison to police involvement to the yellow vest movement and general riots the past couple of years.

This isn't a gotcha, because frankly Hamas and Israel will both ignore frances request, same as they would do the UK and the rest of the world, it is a more a realisation moment of the complexities of a multicultural society and how to address it going forward.

Parkingt111 · 10/11/2023 22:47

@Puzzledandpissedoff did you see what Biden tweeted yesterday? He's another one that is furiously back peddling
