Why would Israel "help" when Hamas have slaughtered and kidnapped 1,400+ people? Did you ask America to "help" Al Qaeda in the aftermath of 9/11?

Does that mean you make no distinction between civilians and the terrorist "government" who have denied them elections for 17 years?

No one asked the US to help Al Qaeda but there has been little public support for wars in the middle east in the last 20 years. Prior to invading Afghanistan there was lots of discussion about the impact on a civilian population who were enduring a famine at the time we sent troops in.

Look how well that turned out for Afghanistan. And we still haven't won the war on terror.

I'd imagine it means that where currently Gaza gets a certain amount of power from Israel this will stop. Where as previously aid, medicine, water food etc was able to cross between Gaza and Israel this will be stopped. If Gaza wants or needs anything they will have to get it via the border with Egypt. Israel will effectively seal its border with Gaza and leave them to it to be self sufficient and govern themselves. Can hardly blame them really

sprigatito · 20/10/2023 17:02

It means the Israeli government isn't even bothering to pay lip service to international law any more. Why should they? They've been told that Western support is unconditional, so this is their big chance to clear all those inconvenient brown people out of the way once and for all.

😢 I was worried that this is what it meant. Wtaf is happening? Why can't the UN intervene? I feel sick

Because Britain and Russia are voting against peace and the US vetoing.

It’s obvious how Putin benefits from the distraction of a war elsewhere but how to Britain and the US benefit.?

It’s a weird world when China sounds like the grown up in the room.

That was my thinking on it too. Basically they will try to get whatever results they are looking for with Hamas and then seal the border. Tbf this may be the best option for both Gaza and Israel in the long run. Not interfering with each other at all. But it absolutely kills the 2 state solution dead. Israel never really wanted to occupy Gaza and they don’t want to now either. I think they want to forget it exists. But the Gazans have to be given territorial waters, no more blockade except the land border with Israel.

Gaza does have a desalination plant (which requires fuel) which the EU helped to build, maybe with some aid a few more can be built after this is over. The rebuild will be insanely expensive and long but I imagine significant funds will be made available by various governments to help make it happen.

You are aware the Israeli population is majority Sephardic/Mizrahi? Hence - in your lovely parlance - "brown people" themselves.

fearfuloffluff · 20/10/2023 15:55

I think it means 'we will kill them probably'

They are openly saying that.

I think it was yesterday Netanyahu was out rallying the troops telling them to kill everyone and make sure no one was left.

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/10/2023 17:55

For whoever it is quoting the 1400 Israeli’s that have been killed, if it’s about an eye for an eye it’s kind of gone beyond that. Its at least 4000 killed in Gaza, goodness knows how many injured, not to mention the women that have miscarried due to shock/fear of the bombing, and the children who will never get over this.

Can you provide a source for that please?

Does it also mean the Israeli administration will also stop controlling (preventing) new wells and infrastructure materials imported into Gaza (including what Egypt allows in)?

ketchup07070 · 20/10/2023 20:27

For anyone concerned about civilians in Gaza, there are several petitions on Petitions-UK Gov. and Parliament. They are requesting different things, such as urging the allowance of humanitarian aid and calling for a ceasefire, so you can see which ones you agree with. Please do have a look, if you haven't already, as every bit of pressure on our politicians helps to get that aid a bit closer.

PurpleChrayne · 20/10/2023 16:24

Israel handed Gaza over to the Palestinians in 2005.

No they did not.

America did help Afghanistan though. For twenty years the US rebuilt Afghanistan, spending billions on infrastructure, education, health, women’s rights, industry and so on. It eventually got unaffordable and when they left, the Taliban took over.

You're on right track and most in this thread are not.

@flufferknutter the phrase "cease responsibility for life" means afterwards the State Of Israel will have no formal obligations to Gaza going forward.

It doesn't mean what you thought.

It means Israel will say its no longer responsible for telecommunications, water, electricity and sewage networks, as well as the flow of people and goods into and out of the territory. Gaza will NOT be able to use Israeli currency.

Palestinian Authority was supposed to maintain responsibility for security within Gaza, protect civilians within Gaza and to prevent indiscriminate attacks on Israeli civilians. Palestinian Authority completely failed and Hamas took over.

Gaza will be on its own and I seriously doubt if people will be allowed to move between Israel & Gaza too.

Not surprising after Hamas took Gaza and spent the years since developing its terrorist weapons capabilities & infrastructure. Planned the attack on Israel having convinced Israel, Western Powers and other countries in the Middle East they're too busy governing Gaza Strip.

Israel intend on keeping Gaza at arms length and increasing a DMZ between them, hence Gaza will shrink.

No work permits for Gazans to go to Israel - partly how Hamas knew where to go no 7th October 2023.

There's no way Israel or any other State will be able to trust Gaza again. Not for a very, very, very long time at least.

DownNative · 20/10/2023 20:38

It will also have to mean that Palestinian areas will have to be, to use Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi's words, a demilitarised State.

El-Sissi believes there wouldn't have been war if it had been demilitarised long ago.

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 20:44

It was on radio 4 this evening.

Basically it means that once Hamas is destroyed Israel will have nothing to do with Gaza. They will have a new government, and Israel will have nothing to do with them

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 20:45

Would you want Hamas for your neighbour? You would trust them?

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 20:46

@DownNative yes this is what was reported on radio 4

Notmytotoro · 20/10/2023 20:53

Sorry I didn't read the other comments.

To me ceasing responsibility means Israel will stop providing water, electricity etc to Gaza.why Hamas didn't spend the money on those things instead of weapons to murder innocent people is beyond me..

I do think Gazans after this war need to have different government, one who truly cares about their people , a government who does not start a war..

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 20/10/2023 21:01

The place is being flattened, it's inhabitable

How will such a poor country ever rebuild itself?

What downnative described doesn't sound like they would have nothing to do with Gaza? It sounded like they still plan to control them?

Did you see the other thread about water earlier? Many people have been asking why Hamas haven’t concentrated on building and maintaining a drinking water supply before now. And yet, every well has to have Isreali government approval and planning permission. Which is very difficult to get. And without it, the Isreali army have Carte Blanche to destroy any unapproved wells. Which they do. So, whilst I am more than willing to accept that Hamas leadership likes to spend its foreign aid on whatever the fuck it likes, I now am not quite so sure it’s a simple fait accompli.

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 21:05

Downnative said that a

Yes.

it's abhorrent

So they plan to let Gaza build a port? Have an airport? Use all of their land?
