Hi Juicy, Happy New Year! Tell me about it - the coughs! Nightmare!
Drinking, don't have any in the house and meet your friends for coffee instead of a drink. If we have drink in the house, DP will definitely drink it all in a fairly short space of time. He makes me drinks as well, every night if it is there.
Just like biscuits buy once a week and don't buy many, or you are doomed.
Good luck with it!

rhetorician · 04/01/2009 00:29

Hi rowing and juicy - I too am on the alcohol abstinence train on the grounds that it's something I haven't tried and fascist fertility experts everywhere say that it's just no good...if I get a BFP then I might be convinced. As it happens I was reading that bit in the bible where Manoah's 'barren' wife is told that she will bear a son as long as she makes sure not to 'drink not wine nor strong drink' and lo and behold produces Samson (this is doubly weird for me as I have a 41 year old friend who has a son called, yes, you guessed it. But I don't think she abstained from wine...) At the risk of causing offence I am not prone to bouts of scripture - I was reading it for work (and yes, given that I am not a vicar that does mean that I have a very strange job ).

Well, ladies, chin up (or not, IYSWIM) - at least our livers will be in fine fettle.

rowingboat · 04/01/2009 21:37

Hi Rhet, yes time to throw out the Buckfast and make a clean break. I did used to like sleeping uder the railway arches with my bottle, but I realise it's standing in the way of conception, so 2009 and a healthy liver here I come.
I wonder if milk thistle would help actually, isn't that good for detoxing the liver. And there's something to do with the liver and fertility according to accupuncturists (clutching at straws here, but bear with me).
I've been doing more research in advance of the IVF and apparently increasing protein is good for improving egg quality and so is Q10. What else, oo and wild yam root is good for something too.
Bit of a ramble there, but I have to tell somebody what I have found on the internet.

Juicylucytoo · 04/01/2009 21:56

Hi Rhet and Rowing. I can have it in the house without drinking. In the past I've gone without if there's only an expensive bottle in the house and couldn't be bothered to go to the offie. Also DH is due back from 18 days off shore (alc free environment) so can't really deprive him. That will be the start of the hard part tbh - him drinking me not, though he will probably drink less.

Only day 4 and I'm so bored of the non alc alternatives already. No idea how long I will hold out, but am aiming to try for max 5 units a week if I do give in, so will keep you posted on my progress.

Re Samson - interesting choice of name

Also curiousity very aroused by need for scripture reading in non religious job Rhet!

Juicylucytoo · 04/01/2009 22:00

oo and wild yam root?? Blardy heck sounds very exotic and interesting.

Not sure I can face any more supplements tbh I almost rattle when I get up in the mornings as it is - but I hope we get at least one BFP between us soon to justify all our sacrifices and efforts

rowingboat · 04/01/2009 22:35

I know Juicy, bleeding chemists - my cupboard!
Speaking of which must go and take my 50 odd tablets.
Oh and now the forum I check is on about powdered wheat grass, supposedly very yucky.

Katiestar · 04/01/2009 22:41

Hi I am 40 and have 4 kids -youngest nearly 4 yrs old. I had no probs at all conceiving and carrying first 4 but since then had 2 MCs both within past yr .The big difference is that I didn't have any M/s at all with the 2 I lost both at 8-9 weeks.Beginning to wonder if my hormone levels are too low and could be treated if I get PG again

FertilityFiend · 04/01/2009 22:42

Hi guys - get us with all this abstinence!!

I'm reckoning it's worth a go too (boo)... Like Rhet it's one of the (non-medical) things I haven't tried. I'm very much a wine with dinner kind of a gal on a very (ahem) regular basis. Like every day. So this will be interesting.

Rowing - interesting too re the supplement stuff, I've tried milk thistle in the past to try and ward off hangovers, maybe it's worth revisiting. Blimey my liver won't know itself.

Fruitbowl - re your question, just suck it up I guess!! If you're referring to how the goods might be, er, procured in the first place (which I think you probably were), I guess I was thinking along the lines of possibly a quiet 'solo' performance in the shower, or sommat like that... anything which makes less noise than loud bedpost banging shagging!

rhetorician · 04/01/2009 22:48

yam root, wheatgrass - are we a bunch of loons and cranks or what? but not as mad as the people on the tv buying nappies and prosthetic limbs for their PETS!!

I'm an academic and so I spend tax-payers' money (if you live in the UK thankfully not yours!) doing incredibly esoteric things with Bibles. But most of the time I just teach people Shakespeare and stuff....

juicylucy I think the secret to the not drinking is not to look for alternatives other than water. Mind you, I am now feeling v grumpy after 4 days of no sugar, no white carbs, very little caffeine (can't quite sacrifice that morning cuppa). I know it's good for me, but it's sooooo boring.

on the Samson front I just hope he doesn't succumb to male pattern baldness when he grows up...

rowingboat · 04/01/2009 23:42

Katie, hi there! I'm not sure about the recurrent losses. It could be linked to the sperm or the egg quality or possibly hormone levels. I think you should make an appointment with your GP, to check things out.
I must admit I am scared at the prospect of paying for one adolescent, set of university fees never mind five.

Ilovechristmas · 05/01/2009 12:58

morning all, I just wanted to pop in for a moan Havent shared my problems with any others as yet, so when Im feeling rubbish, theres only the other half and he is now at work. Woke very early this morning with the worst sickness ever. Still feeling very queezy, even words referring to things make me woozy. Im lucky that I dont have to go to work until tomorrow, but Im really worried that if I wake feeling like this I just wont be able to go I am also going to number 2s (blush) alot. Feeling very weepy as Im just so fed up and not seeing the dr till wednesday xx

rowingboat · 05/01/2009 13:07

Oh dear Ilove, it is all very mysterious. Perhaps you have also picked up a bug or have an inner ear thing?
Hope you are feeling better soon, go back to bed if you can!

Ilovechristmas · 05/01/2009 13:16

thanks - Ive only just got back out (grin) Ive also got the horrid taste in my mouth. It is all so mysterious, Im trying to get the rest of my xmas decorations down, doing it very slowly in between breaks. xx

FertilityFiend · 05/01/2009 14:35

Ilovechristmas - sorry to hear you're feeling so crap

I was a bit hesitant to post this as it may well be a complete red herring, and you certainly don't want any unnecessary worry. However this ovarian cyst thread may be worth a quick read just to see if there's any info there which is useful one way or the other with ruling things out. (btw afaik ovarian cysts are usually easily treatable or else just go away on their own, don't want to panic you!).

here

The NHS info is here

Ilovechristmas · 05/01/2009 14:59

Hi FF, yes I had thought about cysts as a possiblity, thanks for the links. I dont have any pain at all though, but I have read some people get no pain at all. I am hoping I get a scan and quick as Im really feeling fed up today Just got the tree to dismantle and hoover and I think Ill crawl back into bed xx

loubers · 05/01/2009 19:15

I ahve just had my 40th birthday so can I now be officially in the TTC over 40 club? I am starting my third and final lot of HCG injections this month and if that doesn't work then it is either IUI or IVF. Started my fitness regime today but not sure how long it will last! Best of luck everyone. Is anyone else TTC no3 and wondering why it is taking so long?

fruitbowl · 05/01/2009 19:35

Hi girls!

I'm not struggling with the lack of booze so much as getting off my arse to do some exercise and eat less chocs, biscs, cake. I'm using the excuse of the 2ww to avoid the gym but will need to get round to it - sigh

FF stop making me laugh with these visions of medicine syringes, showers and rattling bedposts - it's all getting quite "carry on" (another reference only us over 40s might get??)

IloveC sorry to hear you're suffering and anxious about what's going on. Hope you can hang on in there til the docs x

Hi loubers and good luck this month.

Had our follow up consultation after all our fertility tests today and news not quite as bad as I thought. Although one side of my uterus seems to be under-developed (that's a new one on me! - wonky womb) and one tube is damaged in some way plus I'm not ovulating regularly - doc seems to think we stand a good chance on clomid and was nicely optimistic "nature will find a way". How refreshing. So, I'm quite shocked to have walked away with 6 mths worth of clomid and new hope.

Anyone on here any clomid experiences? I'll check out the other clomid threads but wanted to check if any of my fabulous 40 friends have anything to share? xx

Ilovechristmas · 05/01/2009 19:42

Thanks Fruitbowl, glad your drs appointment went well. Im not sure the drs here would be so supportive. My dr thought it was quite funny that I had all the symptoms of pregnancy!! Men lol - seeing a woman on wednesday, if Im not better tomorrow, Im going to have to try and get an appointment tomorrow, I have to work and if I dont work, I dont get paid xx

vonsudenfed · 05/01/2009 19:53

Hello there, is there room for another one on board?

I am 42 - for another 6 weeks - with a DD of 2.2. I had a missed miscarriage before having her, then had another missed miscarriage last year (a blighted ovum that held on until 11 weeks ffs).

That was in August, and I am now getting quite stressed about how much time I wasted both not getting pregnant and then miscarrying. Sigh.

Juicylucytoo · 05/01/2009 20:34

vonsudenfed - the more the merrier. Sorry for your losses. It's so frustrating when time already feels like it's in short supply.

Fruitbowl. What great news. Glad your dr was positive. What a refreshing change.

Day 5 of no alc. Already feeling heroic how pathetic!!

Can't leave off the Roses though

TTCno2Survivor · 05/01/2009 21:04

I'M BACK

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

(it's me XSS or xserialshopper to those in the know!)

Welcome Vonsudenfed we've always room for 1 more

Hows everyone (apart from above posts because obviously I can see how you all are - alcoholics the lot of yer, esp that rowing)

FertilityFiend · 05/01/2009 23:03

Hi XXS / TTCNo2S

Ilovechristmas - at your doc thinking your pg symptoms were amusing Hope the other doctor has a better attitude, and that you feel better very soon.

Welcome vonsudenfed I've got a 2yo DD too. Sorry to hear about your MC's. Know what you mean about the wasted time Still, a new year and all that...

Loubers - welcome to the fabulous 40+ers! Good luck with the HCG

JuicyLucy - yes that Crimbo choc's just too good isn't it. Still, a girl's gotta have some pleasures in life... think how many wine calories we're saving. PS I was feeling heroic after 3 hours off the booze

Fruitbowl - Good news about the doc, and good luck with the Clomid. btw I'm thinking of changing my name to CarryOnConceiving - whaddaya think??

Day 2 of Alcohol Abstinence here - it seems to be getting harder, I'm bored now... Would quite like to manage a whole week, then might start a new revised moderate programme or something Oh and it's CD4 too, ho hum.

Juicylucytoo · 05/01/2009 23:11

FF - am quite certain will not manage too long without alc, but am hoping I can stick to the "5 units a week" principle and make it a rolling 7 days so that cheating isn't possible - i.e. drink the 5 units on the saturday then want it again on the sunday and make the excuse that it's a new week (know I would and the whole thing would quickly go down the pan). So this way my 5 units have to be 7 days apart.

Have just realised I'm putting way too much thought into this.

Am lurving the new name too FF!

StarPlayer · 06/01/2009 10:03

You lot are really missing the 'drink' aren't ya(I can tell by Juicy's indepth analysis of the situation

FF I think that would be an interesting name change - though I have to say I really like your name as it is now

Oh - it's me XSS/ TTCnor2Survivor!!! I trying out different monikers but I think I'll stick to this one for now

rhetorician · 06/01/2009 11:04

hello all and welcome to new TTCers and reinvigorated and renamed, um, old ones I'm a bit worried about all you gals chatting merrily about missing the drink at 9 in the morning!

Interested in clomid stuff - it's something I am hoping my doc will prescribe for me. I do ovulate regularly, but think that a helping hand on the egg ripening might not go amiss. However, I am not sure how keen GPs here are to prescribe it (I live in Ireland). But worth a go, I think.
