After 18m persuading DH, we are finally (v gently ) TTc no 3.
As I am now 35, am convinced my fertility days are behind me.
Anyone in a similar position and needing to share support?

Can't answer you directly Darrell but there is a ttc for over 40's thread on here and ther are def loads of ttcers 35+

MrsTittleMouse · 20/06/2008 14:11

I would have joined you at Christmas when we were thinking of TTC - but I'm now pregnant (due in Oct)! It was easier to conceive afer 35 than before for me. Good luck.

MissusH · 20/06/2008 14:13

I felt the same as you, Darrell when I started ttc #2 last summer (was just 35)

I ate as healthily as I could (don't smoke & didn't really drink alcohol anyway) and then kept a close eye on my cycles.

I didn't go as far as temping but did monitor cm.

It took 6mths to conceive and am now 26wks pg!! I think fertility drops off after 35 but it is by no means a no-hope situation...

Good luck

jaype · 20/06/2008 14:17

Yes! Have a 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 yo and want no. 3. I am 34. However, have been ttc for 7 months now with nothing to show except (since ttc) a lovely new PMT symptom of chronic nausea - it's all odd as my first two came along very quickly. Anyway when I went to see the doctor today about both issues as I think they're related, he told me as I was getting on a bit I was probably only ovulating every few cycles so there was only a 30 percent chance of conceiving each time. Not very impressed! Moral of the story is if you want another get going... just in case.

DarrellRivers · 20/06/2008 14:25

I also have 2 , aged 4.5 and 3, and spent 6m TTC no1, and then about 1 week no2, so am unsure how this is going to work out.
Have you checked out fertility friend, i have found is useful this month and through temping I think i ovulate around D18 which is much later thatn I thought i did, so hopefully next month will have a better idea which week to aim for lots of action.
Am D22 this cycle so just over a week until i can get hopeful
Fertilityfriend quotes figures of 20% success eeeek

Thanks for positive story MissusH and Mrs Tittlemouse and thanks playing the waiting game, will explored the 40+ thread, although I thought I might be too young for that thread on reading the title

jaype · 20/06/2008 14:43

Am trying the Clearblue monitor in the hope that throwing money at the problem will help!!!! Have had it for 2 months now, and while 1st said I was ov'ing around day 14 or 15, the second didn't pick up a surge - though I might have been a bit careless with holding things in samples for too long.

DarrellRivers · 20/06/2008 14:52

It is funny about the nausea, I can convince myself from D14 that I feel sick, have funny taste in mouth and also v sore boobs , and then my period comes along.
I reckon you will get a positive result soon.
The good things for us are 2 previous pregnancies, that is a very encouraging fact.
I have never temped before and am amazed by the difference, (although have to do on the sly in the morning when DH in the bathroom) as trying to be really casual about the whole thing and not freak him out with too much obsessing.
I could never get the hang of ovulation kits, the colour of the strips always looked the same to me

OP posts:
jaype · 20/06/2008 14:56

Tried the ebay strips but they didn't register anything... I too am a secret tester. dp is of the view that we should be happy with what we have and wasn't too impressed when he saw I'd bought it. I have hidden it away now and try not to rustle the wrappers too much!

DarrellRivers · 20/06/2008 15:03

hahaha , sounds very similar to my DH.
He thinks i am mad and doesn't think we really need to alter the status quo
I'm just greatful he finally agreed to 'no contraception'.
Means I won't go too crazy I hope
The first morning the thermometer beeped, he was very suspicious but I got away with it as he was half asleep, now whenever he goies to the toilet, I whip out my thermometer and beep away in peace.

OP posts:
DarrellRivers · 20/06/2008 15:04

sorry 'grateful'

jaype · 20/06/2008 22:39

Ha ha - we should re-title the thread 'the secret beepers and crinklers club'... Good luck all!

snotbuster · 20/06/2008 22:56

I was convinced I was infertile at 35 - that's how DS came along! (We were TTC/experimenting to see if I still could and it only took 2 months) Good luck.

Lionstar · 20/06/2008 23:19

DarrellRivers I'll come and hold your hand if you like. I'm 36 and ttc no.2, well I will be this cycle anyway, still have AF at the moment! Conceived DD first go (and she's 16 months now), but have read loads of threads on here about how it never seems to be as easy second time around. We've both been on a 3 month detox & no alcohol, taking folic acid etc. in preparation (anal or what?). We're both really nervous about the thought of a second baby - more so than trying the first time I think, not sure why.

DarrellRivers · 21/06/2008 09:53

Well if we manage to get near 1000 posts that's what we shall name it then jaype
wlecome lionstar
i reckon the second time is usually faster than the first, so you should be happening soon hopefully
i am overinterpreting my body, had some cramps this am, hope they were implantation, probably just my guts though

OP posts:
Lionstar · 21/06/2008 12:33

I've heard somewhere that your ovaries alternate which one releases an egg - anyone know any more about this? Thing is I only have one fallopian tube, so am wondering if I have a 50/50 chance each month (if at all!!), or whether the remaining one will compensate.

Do you think I'm over thinking this!

DR - think positive, visualise that implantation

beaniesteve · 21/06/2008 12:55

Yes I think healthy ovaries take it in turns but not always. I had a scan last month and they said my right ovary was about to release an egg. I have just had a positive Ovulation stick and a peak on my monitor and I have pains in my left side so I am guessing I am ovulating from the left one now.
The internet says

"Yes, pregnancy is possible with only one fallopian tube as long as you have one or both ovaries and still ovulate.

Typically, a single egg is released each month by one of your ovaries. The egg travels down a fallopian tube, where a sperm may fertilize it. The fertilized egg then continues on to the uterus. You need only one fallopian tube for this to happen.

The egg released from the ovary usually enters the fallopian tube adjacent to that ovary. Although evidence suggests that an egg released from one ovary can be transported by the fallopian tube on the opposite side, this is rare. Ovulation tends to alternate ovaries, so it's likely that with only one tube, eggs from the opposite ovary never have a chance to be fertilized.

Also, fertility may be reduced if a fallopian tube was removed due to a tubal pregnancy or infection. In such cases, the remaining tube may not be normal. If you have only one ovary and it's on the opposite side of your only fallopian tube, you're at increased risk of tubal pregnancy."

cosima · 21/06/2008 12:59

i'm 37 just had a baby after previous miscarriage, and my baby is gorgeous. don't worry. My great grandma had 3 kids in her 30's. One of them at 39 and that was back in the days when older mothers were totally unheard of and pre natal care was non existant

SpangleMaker · 21/06/2008 13:39

Hello! can I join you? I'm 37 and on my 6th cycle TTC#1 and starting to wonder if we've left it too late. My cycles are very regular though so I'm hoping there's a chance. V. impressed at Lionstar's 3 month detox!

Since starting ttc I reckon I've had every pregnancy symptom there is... this month I've got a new one - bleeding gums - probably just need better dental hygiene though

cosima · 21/06/2008 14:11

spangle i had terrible bleeding gums, now the dentist says if i don't floss every day my teeth will fall out. I lost a tooth whilst pregnant, and my dental hygiene was top notch. My dad is a dentist so WARNINg - Floss

SpangleMaker · 21/06/2008 14:22

cosima, thanks for the warning, will diligently floss from now on! Were your bleeding gums pregnancy related? I didn't realise (until the obsessive googling) that this could be a symptom/side-effect of pregnancy.

cosima · 21/06/2008 15:03

yes didn't have anything before i was pregnant. Basically got pregnant and had abcess behind root canal, ,couldn't x ray or take anti biotics cos in early pregnancy so they just took it out without anaesthetic. AARGH!! took four hours, total agony, worse than labour, then I miscarried after, then got pregnant again and gums bled severly whole way through. They have stopped now couple of weeks after baby was born. But your gums do not grow back, so once they recede thats it and all you can do is prevent it getting worse or end up a toothless old crone.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 21/06/2008 15:26

"I've heard somewhere that your ovaries alternate which one releases an egg - anyone know any more about this"

Actually the process is entirely random.

SpangleMaker · 21/06/2008 15:39

cosima, so sorry to hear about your experience, what an absolute nightmare! DH had an abscess last year and was in terrible pain, I can't even begin to imagine how paniful it must have been esp without anaesthetic and the mc afterwards. I'm glad to hear you have a dc now though.

You've certainly shocked me into behaving myself dentally... and out of being perversely 'pleased' at having a new symptom to obsess over
