Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Elsie2021 Aww, thank you for the kind words! I love pugs, honestly my dream dog, the cocker spaniel was my OHs idea but if i had my way it would be a pug, love them!
Yay!!! So glad your chart looks like that! Its not silly at all, its exciting when it happens to you as you want it so bad.
Very nice to have this place to chat, totally agree with that xx

@MintGreenLife Yes! Happy wedding weekend!! Hope its going well xx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 06/09/2020 21:13

Checking in to say I got a positive OPK today! Now to just show ovulation on temps. Luckily we got romantic this morning so now also know to prioritise the next few days Smile

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 07:22

@TheDaydreamBelievers Ah yay!! Thats great, hope the temp matches.
Glad you managed to DTD and nice to know you can focus on it a bit more now as you've had your peak :)

I had a flashing smiley yesterday on CD12 so hoping for another flashing or a peak today/tomorrow so just a day or two behind you! We DTD this morning (OH's alarm went off bright and early and think he knew it was around my time) we're very much like just see what happens as we did say we'll wait until next month but no preventing is happening so far xx

MrsBtobe2020 · 07/09/2020 08:09

Hello everyone! Hope you don't mind me joining? I came off the pill in May, had a period after 35 days then 32 and then last cycle was 42! I tried using opks last cycle but wasn't seeing anything on them at all for ages so gave up at cd20. I had period cramps for days at around 28 days (I assumed AF) but then it was another 2 weeks til AF showed so now I'm wondering if actually I had a very late ovulation? So this month I'm poas every day for as long as poss! We were sposed to get married in 2 weeks but when it got postponed in May we thought we'd start ttcing ASAP. So far all I'm doing is worrying I've got something wrong with me and that im not ovulating!

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 08:26

Hi All,

Hope you don’t mind me joining! I came off the pill at the start of June and although my AF seems regular I’m not convinced that I am actually ovulating! Im going try some cheapie OPKs this month and see what happens, what is everyone’s thoughts on temping? I’m not sure I can commit to doing it at the same time every morning.

@Flowerkm my dog stole a bottle of flash bathroom cleaner out of the shopping bags once & ran off with it upstairs by the time I realised he had it he had pierced the bottle and his breath smelt like flash with febreze (was an improvement 😂) emergancy vet dash and £150 later he was fine, glad your little one is ok! They do know how to test us and there are mischievous at that age

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 08:57

@MrsBtobe2020 Hey 😊 sorry to hear about your wedding! :(

Which OPKs are you using? The femometer ones are handy as they're a little cheaper and great for seeing where you are in your cycle.
I don't temp at the moment but I know a lot of ladies on here do and they'd recommend it as it confirms ovulation but you could have ovulated late which is why the cramps where there. Very confusing isn't it?

@Sarahp2308 Welcome :) join right in, more the merrier! I don't temp at the min, Im just trying to see how my cycles go and so far they're ok and getting peaks on OPKs but as I'm not temping Im not 100% sure Im ovulating but the signs are there so fingers crossed.

😂 ohh no! They're into everything aren't they?! Ive heard so many stories of dogs stealing things and its made me feel better as these things do happen but she did test us and now I risk assess EVERYTHING 😂😂 glad yours was ok as well, cheeky things xx

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 09:35

@Flowerkm Thank you 😊 My AF is due in couple of days so I think I may use the OPK on the next cycle and see how that pans out, trying to be relaxed about TTC we haven’t really been actively trying but also not preventing, if that makes sense.

I know, I feel like I have to toddler proof the house all the time 😂

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 09:47

@Sarahp2308 That sounds like a good plan, give it a go. We're exactly the same, we used protection for a few months and then this month when I mentioned using one he didn't so not really preventing which is nice and just trying to relax but its so easy to over think it. Im tracking away in the background just to give me peace of mind and then give the OH the heads up. We're quite good at DTD if Im honest so doesn't feel like its put on lol

Oh 100%! I think puppies honestly give you a bit of an insight for kids (Im sure people with children will disagree but its the closest i have) 🤣

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 10:07

@Flowerkm I have been tracking in the background using the flo app but I don’t bother telling OH as I think it will go over his head to be honest 😂 thats good I am concious about DTD becoming a TTC chore thats why I am trying to not over thinking it.

I absolutely agree with you about puppies...he has an internal alarm between 6:30-7:00 so well over any lie ins 😂

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 10:34

@Sarahp2308 Haha! Same, straight over his head, I don't think he really understands the small window it can happen in so good job we're in control lol

Aww, tell me about it! 😂 xx

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 11:15

@Flowerkm nope my OH definitely doesn’t understand best to not trouble them with that kind of info anyway 😂

MrsBtobe2020 · 07/09/2020 13:37

@Flowerkm so frustrating! I'm using femometer ones at the moment, I used an entire box just on one cycle 😅. I've been checking twice a day at lunch and after work during the week and I haven't seen anything other than about 16% (femometer app). I know LH circulates anyway but maybe that's my baseline? I did say to my OH that I didn't want to temp because I'm gonna stress myself out but I may have to!
Since coming off the pill I've had lots of hair loss and only now is the CM starting to appear again after 3 months. Each period has been super light and short though but I've read that a lot
@sarahp2308 ah nice to know someone's in the same boat (although I'd rather it be working for us!). Hopefully youl have no probs with the opks. I have read of people having no luck on the opk and still end up with bfps. 🤞🤞 Because we aren't telling anyone its making me feel worse!

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 14:34

@MrsBtobe2020 I use those as well, i do find them good and you might be right about the baseline actually, mine tend to always have a very very faint line although sometimes i have none.
Im the same, i think temp would stress me out 🙈
Oh no, I have read that can be a side affect from coming off the pill. It takes around 3 months to regulate everything so hopefully it all calms down soon :)

I haven't told anyone either apart from my twin, we share everything lol but i did tell her that this cycle Im keeping hush, she just knows that we're starting to try and thats it. nice to be able to chat on here as theres no one else to talk to about it!

Elsie2021 · 07/09/2020 16:43

Welcome @MrsBtobe2020 @Sarahp2308! :)

I would recommend temping as it is one of the few ways to actually confirm ovulation and if you’re worried it isn't happening then it’s a big relief to see that temperature rise.

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 18:16

@MrsBtobe2020 I know it I’m concious about stressing myself out with OPKs but at the same time not knowing is stressing me out 😂 can’t win! I’ve only told one close friend, that’s why these website are great its such a good place to come and speak to others who are going through the same!

Thanks @Elsie2021 I may look into them abit more in that case

MintGreenLife · 07/09/2020 19:16

Hey girls, finding a moment to update you all after a crazy weekend. Thanks so much for your well-wishes for the wedding 😘 Even though it wasn't what we initially planned, we had such an amazing day and to be honest it couldn't have been more special.

How's everyone getting on? I finally ovulated yesterday (I think!), which is super annoying as DTD just went out the window with all the wedding mayhem. Wedding was Saturday and then ovulation Sunday, which I just knew would happen, typical 🙄 We found DTD impossible at my sister-in-laws and with a house full of family. Never mind. I'm not 100% sure on ovulation but my EWCM seems to have stopped today after I had it for two weeks solid, temp spiked to 36.55, but I didn't temp the night before or the night of the wedding, and wasn't doing OPKs either. Means ovulation happened on CD29, which is a little better than last cycle at around CD40! Assuming I'll be going on to the next cycle now as last time we DTD was last Wednesday. Hope you're all good ☺️ Xx

@MintGreenLife aww massive congratulations! That seems to have come around quickly! Glad you managed to celebrate despite the circumstances and hope you had a lovely weekend.

I realise I haven't sent an update for about 20 pages of this thread despite promising I would. I decided to stay away from online forums while in the two week wait to avoid getting too anxious! Then I got my BFP at 11DPO but was so afraid of a chemical/ectopic (I research way too much!) as I was spotting/light bleeding for a whole week. Turns out it was implantation bleeding, though a lot of websites say it should last only a few days. So went for an early scan today to make sure and everything is fine so far - 6 weeks along with a heartbeat detected!

I was really surprised that this happened so quickly since the cycle before I had a 9 day luteal phase and a failed ovulation before that which caused breakthrough bleeding, all after 3 months with no bleeding at all since stopping the pill! I just wanted to share this in case it provided some hope to others who have been in a similar situation Smile

Sarahp2308 · 07/09/2020 20:19

Congratulations @MintGreenLife sounds fab!

Also massive congrats @Hopeful87 Flowers

Flowerkm · 07/09/2020 20:35

@MintGreenLife Congratulations 🥰 glad you had a lovely day, sounds very special and ovulation on CD29 is great compared to your last cycle. DTD doesn't even matter, theres always next cycle and its nice you focused on your wedding rather than all the checks. Im CD13 with a flashing smiley on CB and a low high Id say on the strips, got pains tonight so hoping for a peak tomorrow :)

@Hopeful87 Aww, massive congrats thats so lovely and can totally understand why you stayed away as i can imagine its a anxious time but what lovely news and to detect a heartbeat is great. Im so happy for you, Im sat here smiling and my OH was like 'are you ok' 😂 I just yeah just reading something really nice xx

MrsBtobe2020 · 07/09/2020 20:38

@Elsie2021 thanks I think I might have to start doing that if all fails this month!
@MintGreenLife so lovely that you managed to have your wedding! Congrats!
