Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Juno231 no updates here, temp was still low this morn. Managed to get OH to DTD this morn as was probably our last chance before all the wedding chaos started, but didn't quite go to plan again ha. Never mind, we tried out best, and for all I know I still won't ovulate for another week or more! Still getting lots of EWCM though. Lots to do today and tomorrow for the wedding, so imagine I will probably be quite distracted from DTD anyway!

Sorry to hear about the BFN. How long is your luteal phase usually? Do you think you'll test again or just wait to see if AF arrives? x

@MintGreenLife ah I'm sorry there have been BD issues! You seem to be taking them on the chin though so that's good. My LP is usually 12-14 days but I might do another IC tomorrow morning so I'm not going crazy with the what ifs when we fly off to Sicily on Saturday.

MintGreenLife · 03/09/2020 10:52

@TheHotelCalifornia thanks for the hair compliments :) sorry to hear you're still having such a long cycle argh!

@Kay00 thank you :) we left yesterday and no ovulation yet argh, never mind.

@Flowerkm glad she's OK :) yeah good thanks, not nervous yet! We're just sorting stuff/setting up stuff today and tomorrow. My family are arriving tomorrow so am excited about that. Probably won't start feeling real until towards tomorrow afternoon I don't think xx

@Juno231 sorry I missed your message earlier. Ha yeah, I think it's just this weekend and the pressure of the wedding and then trying to TTC on top of that! It would be so helpful if I knew if it was even worth trying this weekend (i.e whether ovulation was actually going to happen) as if not then I would have said to OH to just leave it and focus on the wedding, but never mind. Don't think we will get much opportunity over the next few days, so if ovulation happens soon I think we will be out this cycle, but what can you do 🤷🏻‍♀️ Doing another test tomorrow sounds sensible. Hope you're looking forward to getting away? X

@MintGreenLife Aw that sounds really exciting, have a lovely time! ☺️

Focus on the wedding now and what will be will be, enjoy these few days of prep and the day itself 🥰 xxx

Flowerkm · 03/09/2020 19:53

@Juno231 sorry to hear about the BFN. Deffo do another before you fly out.
How exciting! Have a lovely time in Sicily, looks so beautiful there ☺️ Xx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/09/2020 20:29

Hey @TheHotelCalifornia! You better not challenge my high score of CD141 Wink!

Cycle 1: 141 days, positive OPK at CD67, OV never detected.
Cycle 2: currently CD30, no sign of ovulation and no positive OPK.

Doing a terrible job at regular sex, work stress has made us both unenthusiastic this last week!

Hope all the regulars are doing well! Who all is in the club? We will need to start a new group soon!

@Juno231 - have a fab holiday!
@MintGreenLife - hope you have a brilliant time at the wedding!

MintGreenLife · 03/09/2020 20:44

Thanks so much @TheDaydreamBelievers ☺️ I'm not far behind you at the mo, I'm CD26 with no ovulation yet, been getting EWCM almost 10 days now 🤦🏻‍♀️

Flowerkm · 03/09/2020 21:03

@TheDaydreamBelievers Sorry to hear works stressful and no signs of ovulation. Hoping it shows soon and it's not as a long wait as your first cycle.

Yes, we do need a new group soon! ☺️ xx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/09/2020 21:27

So, let's see, our wee club includes:

@MintGreenLife
@Flowerkm
@crabette
@Juno231
@TheHotelCalifornia
@mrsmacmc
@Elsie2021
@HopefulJester

Who else is still around? Anyone got any good names for a group? Post Pill Party? Pill Graduates?

MintGreenLife · 03/09/2020 21:30

@TheDaydreamBelievers I feel like we're not ready for the term 'graduates' 😂 Post pill party is good, or post pill TTC tribe? X

OP posts:
Kay00 · 03/09/2020 21:39

I'd like to join too if possible! I like Post Pill Party Grin

Flowerkm · 03/09/2020 22:28

Post pill party sounds good ☺️
Post pill TTC party?

@lawandgin and @Pip1903 may want to join? Xx

lawandgin · 03/09/2020 23:29

@Flowerkm yep I'm still here Grin CD 34, no sign of ovulation, let alone AF! We are going away to Norfolk tomorrow until Tuesday. My last cycle was 58 days, so assuming 14 day LP, no ovulation for another 10 days! I am taking OPKs but it will be tricky with days out, access to toilets etc so I might just forget it for a few days and have a nice time! (Although you never truly get a holiday in my job, I shall be firmly glued to my emails, eugh Hmm)

@MintGreenLife have a fabulous weekend, forget about DTD to TTC and just DTD like there's no tomorrow! Xxx

crabette · 03/09/2020 23:41

I like post pill party 😂

Sorry I've been quiet too gals, I am still checking in though! I just feel like I'm totally out of sync with all you guys, but I guess that's the whole point of the group, no-one's regular 🤷🏻‍♀️

My last AF was super light again, which has got me quite downhearted and I just needed a break from thinking about it - though it was a 31 day cycle, and I think I did ovulate. I haven't even really temped this cycle. CD19 today, been LH testing most days this week just to check, but all negative.

Is your wedding this weekend @mintgreenlife?! How are you feeling? I think everything with ours is kind of getting to me now too, we're meant to be 5 weeks on Sat and I still have no idea what to plan for. Just in a bit of limbo on all fronts!!

crabette · 03/09/2020 23:42

P.S. @Juno231 Have a fab holiday!!

Glitterb · 04/09/2020 07:35

Post pill party update.....so my period finally arrived after being completely absent for 3 months after the pill, it just happened to appear 2 days before flying to Corfu for a chillout holiday 🤷🏻‍♀️ Spent the first 3 days worried about leaking as I’ve not had periods for 5 years as I’ve been on Cerazette! Anyway at least I know where I am in my cycle now!

Kay00 · 04/09/2020 08:19

@Glitterb Woop! Glad to hear you have your period! Albeit just before your holiday - how typical! Good luck in your next cycle!

@Juno231 Have an amazing holiday! And a little break from MN Grin

@MintGreenLife Wishing you the most magical time!!

Juno231 · 04/09/2020 09:27

@Glitterb haha isn't it typical?! I'm off to Italy tomorrow and guess who appeared today...

Yup girls, temp plummeted this morning and my FMU for my final test got thrown out as AF showed whilst I was collecting it lol. So last cycle was 31 days and this one only 25. And annoyingly I've got my pre holiday foof de-floof appointment this evening so it's perfect timing all around!

Cycle 9 here I come :)

Juno231 · 04/09/2020 09:28

@crabette @kay00 thank you! at least this way I can drink lots of wine, aperol and negronis!

Kay00 · 04/09/2020 09:40

@Juno231 every cloud!! Gin Wink

Glitterb · 04/09/2020 11:45

@Juno231 you can’t make it up can you!

Enjoy your holiday hopefully will only be around for a few days of your holiday!

Flowerkm · 04/09/2020 12:35

@lawandgin Have a lovely time away! Don't stress on the OPKs, just enjoy the time away. Feels everyone's getting away! Think i need to book a hols.

@crabette That's what we're here for! Never to out of sync ☺️ hope you're feeling a little better, its good to have space sometimes to think about other things.

@Glitterb and @Juno231 I swear our bodies 'know' but at least its arrived and can start a new cycle.

Have lovely hols all of you who are going away! xxx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/09/2020 13:04

@Juno231 hahahahh foof de floof! I call it a foof too sometimes!

My OPKs still blindingly negative but temps are on their way up. The app seems to think they will go down then up again though!

@Flowerkm sorry to hear about your dog but glad they are on the mend! I have a pug that will get into anything and eat anything and everything! Don’t feel guilty about it, these things happen.

@Juno231 Sorry about your BFN :( And AF arriving for your holiday! But as you say, make the most of it and eat, drink and be merry!

@MintGreenLife Happy Wedding weekend! When is the actual wedding? Is it today? You enjoy it!!!

I got the cross lines of my fertility friends app today. It sounds really silly but, despite seeing everyone else’s charts, I really never thought it would happen to me! It’s so exciting to see it with your own body 😂 I still hardly believe it though, I want a few more high temperatures until I will finally relax that I have ovulated. But I do feel a lot better than I did about it all!

Thank you everyone for all your advice and support. It really is nice having people to talk to about this stuff :)
