Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Juno231 wow! Best night sleep I've had in a looooomg time

@MintGreenLife best of luck with the wedding prep and I hope you ovulate beforehand ❤️

I had some spotting last night with cramp but it didn't stay constant like it does with AF normally - who knows 🤷‍♀️ if nothing develops I'm going to do PT tomorrow morning and see what that shows.

Hugs to all xx

MintGreenLife · 30/08/2020 12:32

@mrsmacmc thanks ☺️ Lots more EWCM today, so hopefully this is leading to ovulation, unlike last time when I had it sporadically for two weeks on end! I've had good amounts three days in a row now, so fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Good luck with your test tomorrow, let us know how you get on xx

I'm so glad I found this thread, first cycle ttc after being on the pill for years. So confused by my body at this point! Been trying to track CM and had a week around CD12-18 where things looked promising, "watery". We assumed that was my fertile week and banged accordingly.

Now I'm at cycle day 31 with no sign of a period yet, but yesterday I got the double whammy of a negative pregnancy test and then EWCM for the first time. So confused, wondering if I'm going to have a really late ovulation this month as my body is all messed up from the pill, or if EWCM is just a red herring and I'm going to get a period surprise in the next week. Anyone else have a totally bonkers first cycle off the pill? Confused

mrsmacmc · 30/08/2020 13:23

@MintGreenLife will do ❤️

@HopefulJester welcome to the thread 😊 until this month I was regular like clockwork. Been on the pill since I was 15 so found OPK sticks quite useful to track things as had no point of reference to 'normality' Daffodil

MintGreenLife · 30/08/2020 13:25

@HopefulJester I'm still having totally bonkers cycles at cycle 5 off the pill 😂 Think it just takes some of us a while to settle back down, especially if you've been on the pill a long time

Elsie2021 · 30/08/2020 13:55

@HopefulJester 6 months post pill and my cycles are still as you describe! I wish I’d properly considered what I have been doing to my body over all these years :(

@MintGreenLife EWCM sounds very promising! Fingers crossed!

@Juno231 thanks for the OPK advice yesterday! I can see why OPKs were driving you crazy. After 36% yesterday morning and then 0% mid afternoon and evening, today I got a 72% around 12.30pm! I’m almost scared to do another one this afternoon, I figure it will be 0% again! But I really want to catch my peak to know that my body is working 😂 I do also temp so that should confirm. I really just want to know I’m ovulating this month.

Juno231 · 30/08/2020 14:15

@Elsie2021 woop for 72% - even if it goes down again this pm I'd expect the trend to continue and a peak appearing tomorrow at the latest anyway? 🤞

@MintGreenLife I'm glad you're getting some good ewcm this cycle, it's sounding rather promising atm.

I just found a blob of EWCM 🤷‍♀️ just one lone though and everything else has been dry. Wonder if that means I had a tiny oestrogen surge today which isn't unusual at this stage. Had a pinching sensation on my lower right groin last night btw and it was so hard not to over think it 😅.

@HopefulJester welcome!

MintGreenLife · 30/08/2020 15:38

@Juno231 EWCM doesn't seem to be an issue for me, I've had no shortage of it each cycle, the issue is that I seem to get it for a lot longer than you're meant to! Still getting very faint lines on OPKs, so maybe ovulation isn't going to happen soon..but then I did miss yesterday's OPK, so who knows what that would have been like.

Ohh well that sounds promising! You never know. It's hard not to overthink every tiny little thing isn't it, but I really think you'd still have a good chance this cycle :) will keep my fingers crossed! Do you think you'll test tomorrow? x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 31/08/2020 09:46

@MintGreenLife no testing for me until Friday I hope! 8 DPO today and got that big oestrogen dip in temps - now fingers crossed it rockets back up tomorrow! How are you today?

MintGreenLife · 31/08/2020 09:55

@Juno231 well done for waiting it out :) will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I'm OK thanks, it's wedding week finally! I've got lots of work to get done today and tomorrow and then we are off from Wednesday to travel up to where we are getting married and start sorting everything out. It's a very DIY wedding as I'm sure you can imagine given that we had to completely change our plans.

My temp is still low today, so no ovulation yet. Yet to see if I have any ewcm today as don't seem to get it until late morning. Kind of given up on OPKs now, just hoping that I see my temp spike by Wednesday morning latest. Think I'm CD22 now.

How are you? x

Morning all

BFN this morning, think AF has finally decided to appear as got red spotting along with usual pains (think hamster gnawing and scratching). Reset the stage and try again. A new month tomorrow so shall see how things pan out! ❤️

Elsie2021 · 31/08/2020 13:36

CD29 and got a positive OPK! I had convinced myself last cycle that I wasn’t ovulating so I feel like this is worth a mini celebration, just hoping that I get a temperature rise to confirm it happened now.

So despite the long cycle, I am feeling pretty happy today :)

Sorry about your BFN @mrsmacmc but it sounds like you’ve got the right attitude. Best of luck for this new month :)

HopefulJester · 31/08/2020 18:22

@Elsie2021 such late ovulation, this makes me more hopeful! I'm keeping my fingers crossed mine is also late this month as at day 32 no sign of period or positive test. Keep us posted!

Haven't braved OPKs yet, but intimidated, looks complicated!

Juno231 · 31/08/2020 18:30

@Elsie2021 aah yay! get BDing!! Got my fingers and toes crossed for you :)

@HopefulJester I hope you follow suit asap. How long was your last cycle?

@mrsmacmc ah I'm so sorry for BFN. Means you've got a brand new shot at it this cycle at least

HopefulJester · 31/08/2020 19:10

@Juno231 No idea, it's my first month off the pill so it's all a mystery! I hear some people take a few months to even have a period, eep!

mrsmacmc · 31/08/2020 19:11

Woohoo @Elsie2021 and fingers crossed @HopefulJester, BD'ing on the cards Smile

@Juno231 this one was 29 days - really threw me though as I'm usually regular as clockwork. This month, I've got proper TTC vitamins for hubby and I along with being back on OPT.

Stage reset - beginners act 1

TheDaydreamBelievers · 31/08/2020 19:42

Hey everyone, hope you are all well! I kinda had a break over my holiday as I was getting really stressed with work and TTC.

Currently at CD26 and 36.4 degrees. Dont think I have ovulated yet but my app (Natural Cycles) is suggesting I test OPKs all this week and next.

Current plan is to try to hydrate, eat, sleep and exercise well, have sex every 2nd day, keep on my temp recordings.

HopefulJester · 31/08/2020 19:51

@mrsmacmc Good luck for the new month! AF can be such a jerk, but maybe well deserved bank holiday wine time

HopefulJester · 31/08/2020 19:53

@TheDaydreamBelievers sounds promising fingers crossed.

There's something quite satisfying about seeing every other day BD achieved on the apps Wink

MintGreenLife · 31/08/2020 20:26

@Juno231 I think because we are only having 15 guests (down from the original 100!) it'll hopefully be a fairly fun weekend...ask me again next Monday 😂 I know I'll still feel the pressure being the bride and all, but hopefully a lot less than I would have if it was still the 'big' wedding. I've only had a little EWCM today. Hoping that might be beacause today could have been ovulation day and so it could be starting to dry up 🤷🏻‍♀️ Think that's probably wishful thinking though and that it's just going away for a few days before coming back again like last cycle.

@Elsie2021 yay for a positive OPK! I'm still yet to get one, or even darker lines despite 5 days of EWCM now 🙄

@TheDaydreamBelievers I had been wondering how you'd been getting on! I'm in a similar position in that in CD22 and no ovulation yet, so am taking the same approach as you and DTD every other day and hoping my temp spikes. Last cycle ovulation was around CD36-40ish, so I suppose if it happens before CD30 that could kind of be a win 🤷🏻‍♀️ Late ovulation is very annoying, but I guess as long as we are ovulating that's the main thing!

lawandgin · 31/08/2020 22:40

CD31 no AF, no positive OPKs and just really damn fed up today. I stopped the pill on 31 May and I'm yet to see a positive OPK.

Elsie2021 · 31/08/2020 22:50

@lawandgin sorry you’re so fed up :( do you temp as well as OPKs? I’ve only recently started using OPKs but I understand they’re not that reliable. Are you actively TTC?

lawandgin · 31/08/2020 23:07

@Elsie2021 no, I don't temp. I said I wouldn't because it's ANOTHER thing to do and we need IVF anyway, so I kinda wondered what the point was. I am starting to change my mind though... we will be having IVF in the New Year (although the prospect of a second wave/lockdown is making me think maybe we should start sooner) but I would like to know I am at least in some kind of working order. I guess some people would say what's the point, if you know you're going to need IVF? I can't explain it, other than to say that I've always assumed my fertility. DH had a vasectomy when previously married, I didn't think I would have any issues. It's only since taking an interest into TTC that I see how naive that is! Just feeling a bit fed up tonight 😔

Elsie2021 · 01/09/2020 07:36

Sorry @lawandgin, I remember you saying now. I find it so hard remembering whose story is whose! I understand the need to want to know your body is ‘working’, but if it is upsetting you and causing you unnecessary stress, especially when it isn’t essential for you, then maybe have a month or so off the whole lot and see how you feel when you try to forget about it for a bit.

I know this is much easier said than done. Especially as after my positive OPK yesterday I was super interested in my temperature this morning and then if all went wrong so now I’m annoyed!

My temperature is always quite low, 35.70-36.00 roughly, then this morning when u woke up it was 36.84! At first I was excited thinking ‘that’s great, I ovulated!’ But then I realised that is a very big jump plus the room was super cold cause I slept with the window open and if was a cold night. So I took it again and it was 35.64 and again 35.71. Went back to sleep and took it again when I woke up 35.94. Gr! What happened to the first temperature?! I didn’t do anything different.

MintGreenLife · 01/09/2020 08:35

Morning everyone ☺️

@Juno231 would you mind casting your eye over my chart? On inputting my temp this morn the crosshairs appeared, but I'm not convinced. My temp this morn was 36.29, which is higher than it has been, as my temps have been as low as 35.75 and average around 36.05-10 this cycle, which is much lower than last cycle, but then my post ovulation temps last cycle got as high as 36.9, but I guess the average was 36.5. What do you think 🤔 X
