Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@Juno231 oh no really! Probably should have worked that one out ourselves ha. Our seller is pushing for an end of October completion, which is very speedy and optimistic! Our last two places have gone through in around 3-4 months, which I guess is about average? Obviously will try and please the seller and do what we can to get it through ASAP, but can't control the speed of the banks!

Ahh that's brilliant. God I hate waiting to hear back about mortgages. The whole thing is just so nervy. Really hope it works out for you! Do you know how long you'll have to wait to hear back?

Honestly what is wrong with my body 🙈 I've just been to the bathroom and had lots of EWCM, so did an OPK and checked my cervix - OPK is still a really faint line, and still finding creamy, slightly stretchy CM around my cervix, and cervix is high and hard. Literally makes no sense. Today was proper EWCM compared to more creamy mixed without EWCM the last few days, so I hope that's a sign ovulation is going to happen in the next week, but then everything else is so muddled up 🤦🏻‍♀️ X

@Flowerkm thanks ☺️ Yeah maybe you're right, I'm just worried about ending up with a due date right on top of the wedding. Maybe we will have to stop just for a month or two to be cautious, not sure if we can postpone again. We've been lucky as we haven't lost any of our deposits, but think maybe we would if we had to rearrange again, urgh it's so tricky. Haha you're totally right about the crystal ball thing. Are you going to start trying officially next cycle then?

Thanks so much, think I need it 😅 Xx

CD26 and just did an OPK that came back 38%. I’m going to take it with a pinch of salt after getting a similar reading earlier in the week that went back to 0% come the evening! But I have also got a lot of watery CM and I ovulated CD30 last cycle so I’m really hoping it’s coming and I’m not going to have a longer cycle!

I completely understand how you’re feeling @MintGreenLife! I’m sure we will get there. Long cycles are annoying but as long as we’re ovulating that’s all we need. Remind me about your wedding plans?

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 12:46

@Elsie2021 really hope it happens for you in the next few days 🤞🏼 So glad it's not just me having this issue! How long ago did you come off the pill again?

So we had to postpone our wedding because of Covid, but we are still going ahead and getting officially married on our original date next weekend with a small creamy (just 15 of us in total), and have postponed the actual day we planned to September next year xx

OP posts:
Elsie2021 · 28/08/2020 13:26

Sorry you had to postpone but lovely that you are still getting married :) I hope you have a lovely day next weekend!
If you do ovulate around that time, getting pregnant on your wedding night would be quite a story!

So I came off the pill end of February and since then have had 4 periods. First two actually came quite quickly around 28 days, then it was 35 days and last one was 41 days! Before that I was on the pill for 11 years since I was 16 so, like many others, I don’t really know what my normal cycle was like as I never really tracked it. I did have one break in that 11 years and it took 8 months for more to have a period so I’m doing better than that I guess 😂

Elsie2021 · 28/08/2020 13:30

With regards to your wedding next year, would it really matter if you were pregnant? Maybe had a break TTC around Dec/Jan so you’re not actually due!

Flowerkm · 28/08/2020 13:36

@MintGreenLife - I think maybe holding off a month or two to avoid due dates bang on the wedding is the best idea as you’d hate to miss your own wedding 🙈 a couple of months is more manageable than stopping completely :)
So Im still in two minds, if we fell pregnant next month Id be 4 weeks away from my due date on her wedding so not to bad but I think ill be feeling very pregnant. The other thing is, her wedding may not even happen if social distancing is in place, she’s said she will postpone if theres any restrictions and I just can’t see anything being lifted :(

Good news about the EWCM, at least its there, as long as you ovulate thats all you need ☺️

@Elsie2021 - sounds good again, hopefully it keeps rising this time xx

Juno231 · 28/08/2020 13:46

@MintGreenLife I just know that if I had your set up I'd quickly lose interest in the Sep 2021 wedding once the actual ceremony was done lol but then again I am a lazy git! Glad for the resurgence of EWCM! Got my fingers crossed for you and @Elsie2021

As for banks - we had rough time with Halifax to the point where we were considering scrapping the whole thing with them last month and starting from scratch with another application - but our broker advised us not to, as the turnaround times for applications are 8 weeks atm due to a lockdown backlog. I hope yours is much faster but likewise expectation management is no bad thing if everything hinges on a speedy transaction!

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 14:10

Thanks @Elsie2021 well that's true, that's assuming we are able to DTD over the wedding weekend as we are staying at my sister-in-laws...fingers crossed if I do ovulate then we manage!

Ahh I came off slightly later than you in April, this is my fourth cycle now. Mine have been similar to you in that my first two cycles were 30 days and 37 days, but I know I ovulated late still and had a really short luteal phase both of those cycles, then my last one as 53 days urgh.

Thanks, yeah I'm not fussed about being pregnant for the wedding, it's being due around the wedding that would be a bad idea! I'm not wearing my actual dress this year, and it was really expensive so it would be a shame if I couldn't wear it next year, but hopefully I would be able to get it adjusted. It's really fitted so not sure how that would look with a big bump, but what can you do. I think you're right though, I'll work out potential due dates and when we would need stop. Really not what I wanted but never mind x

@Flowerkm That's exactly how I feel about our wedding next year, who knows if it will even be able to go ahead then! Hmm, maybe if you're still a little worried that you'll be too far gone by then hold off just one more month? As your cycle is good and you're pinpointing ovulation every month I think you'll have a good shot first time round when you do get going :) xx

@Juno231 Urgh I know, I totally get where you're coming from. It's just because we've already spent so much money and we will lose it all if we cancel next year, plus we invited 100 people to the original day and are down to 15 now and people have booked accommodation for next year after having to move their bookings from this year. It's all so complex and annoying meh.

Well that's really unfortunate - our mortgage is with Halifax too! We don't have much choice as we are tied into a 5 year fix here and have over three years to go, so we're porting our mortgage and then borrowing extra on top. It would cost us £6k to get out of our current deal, so think we will just have to push forward with Halifax. I'm praying that as we already have a mortgage with them it might be a bit quicker...who knows. Hope you get your offer soon x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 28/08/2020 14:25

@MintGreenLife ah fingers crossed they're better with you! Once we filed a complaint (and followed up on it every day until they assigned a case manager to it) it all got sorted pretty quickly and they sent us £350 as compensation. So if they give you grief def keep pushing!

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 14:29

@Juno231 thanks for the advice :) I will ask later when we submit the application how long it's expected to take x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 28/08/2020 14:49

@MintGreenLife Thats what Im thinking, waiting another month but I just want to try and see 😂 but I need to wait as Ill feel a lot better being 8 weeks from due date rather than 4. Hoping i fall quick, but don't we all wish that. Im just going to go into it with an open mind and just see what happens :)
Your dress sounds beautiful! Im sure they can alter it, they're amazing what these seamstress's can do.

God, the reminders of mortgage applications gives me the jeebies lol stressful, especially during these times. I hope you and @Juno231 get these all sorted soon! Covid has put a hold and ruined soo many things, its such a tricky one and so many whats ifs Xx

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 14:57

@Flowerkm awh it must be agony waiting, but I think you'll feel better all round if you do give it another month, it's just one less thing to worry about!

Thanks, it's lace all over, so I doubt I'll be able to get matching lace to create extra room, although may not be the end of the world if I have to have a couple of plain panels put in either side to make space for a bump 😂

Haha oh god I know - I have no idea why we are doing this, wedding, TTC and buying and selling houses all at the same time 🙄 It really has. It's made our lives so complex. I honestly thought we would just get married and TTC and that would be that, but this year had other plans! X

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 28/08/2020 15:35

@MintGreenLife Totally agree! One more month will not hurt, save in the stress. My sister was 3 weeks early with her first, so waiting is a good plan lol

Oh wow, that does sound lovely ☺️

Haha, sounds simple on paper when you put it like that xx

mrsmacmc · 28/08/2020 20:31

BFN on the CB tonight still no sign of AF and I've never been late in my puff - wish we had a really clear sign like one eye changes colour sigh

Juno231 · 28/08/2020 22:07

@mrsmacmc that sucks! How many dpo are you now?

I've had four ex colleagues announce their pregnancies to me this week. Feeling rather.. disappointed? Idk, down I guess about it. They all seem to have caught quickly so wont have a clue how this feels! Worst part is that OH doesn't get it either 😅

mrsmacmc · 28/08/2020 22:56

@Juno231 I'm 10DPO going by app and OPK testing.

That does suck :( had a long conversation with hubby tonight as he is a bit clueless.

socially distanced hug

MintGreenLife · 29/08/2020 08:38

@Juno231 sorry to hear about the other pregnancy announcements, that's really tough. I haven't had that happen yet but am already worrying and knowing I'll find it hard and this is only our third cycle TTC, although should have been five 🤦🏻‍♀️ Can you have some nice treats this weekend to cheer yourself up?

@mrsmacmc sorry about the BFN. 10DPO is still early though so you never know x

OP posts:
mrsmacmc · 29/08/2020 09:56

Morning all! Morning @MintGreenLife

I'm tying myself in knots here as I would usually have AF by now (26 day cycle). I bit the bullet and phoned my Aunt last night and she has said to try and distract myself as much as possible and retest on Monday if AF still hasn't made an appearance.

New bed delivered today nice and early so have that to distract me today - amazing service from Archers, can't wait to coorie up in it tonight and OH has agreed to swap sides with me too which is a big thing as I'll be closer to the radiator - woohoo! It's soooo high! Will need to take a run and jump to get in 🤣

Elsie2021 · 29/08/2020 16:58

@mrsmacmc sorry about the BFN :( fingers crossed it’s just that it’s too early!

@Juno231 sorry you were feeling down yesterday. Hope you are feeling better today?

@MintGreenLife any ovulation signs for you?

I got an OPK of 37% yesterday around 12pm and lots of watery CM, by 6pm it was 50% and then at 11am this morning it was back to 36% but I had a small amount of EWCM and then 3pm this afternoon it was a stark white 0%! Could I have had my peak over night and the levels have already dropped back to 0%?

I’m having a difficult time with these OPK showing random levels that don’t make any sense! I hope it’s not a sign of a problem :/

Juno231 · 29/08/2020 17:59

@Elsie2021 hm I'd say keep going, I've had cycles like that at the start of the year where I ended up assuming I'd missed it but in hindsight it just came a few days later and I'd stopped testing too soon 😅. This is why I added bbt to the mix though as OPKs were driving me nuts. Funnily enough they've been really clear since I started temping... Sod's law.

Yes I'm much better today although I did just have lunch with a friend and her 22 month old (conceived cycle 2). The same friend who is 28 weeks pregnant (by accident, one cycle before they were gonna start TTC)... Grr!

MintGreenLife · 29/08/2020 19:54

@mrsmacmc is there any chance you could have ovulated slightly later this cycle? You never know, I think it's totoally possible to get a BFN at 10DPO and go on to get a BFP a few days later ☺️ New bed sounds bliss!

@Elsie2021 I've still got EWCM today. Seem to have more today and yestday compared to the previous days, and it's completely clear now, rather than more opaque. I didn't manage to do an OPK today as was out most of the day. TBH I've kind of given up on them and am just focusing on DTD every other day and charting BBT to confirm ovulation so we can chill out on the DTD.

The first cycle I used OPKs and charted BBT I had three LH surges, I remember the first was like 95%, second was 60% and then I finally got a positive. That happened over about two weeks. It could be that you missed your surge, but I would keep DTD just in case. Remind me, are you charting BBT also?

I'm feeling a meh about OPKs at the mo, they're just annoying me, and realised there's probably not much point when DTD every other day anyway x

OP posts:
mrsmacmc · 29/08/2020 20:11

@MintGreenLife I don't think so as OPK sticks came up negative the 2 days following the strong OPK positive. Trying to stay positive and distracted, luxuriated in the bath this afternoon and having a quiet night on the couch in new pjs in preparation for new bed tonight :)

@Juno231 I found out another one of my friends is expecting today too - their 4th! Start to see how OH had the view it was 'easy' to conceive

@Elsie2021 fingers crossed for you, keep BD'ing every couple of days, I use the sticks to keep a track but more conscious of DTD every couple of days

Hugs to all & baby dust too ❤️

Juno231 · 30/08/2020 08:01

@mrsmacmc haha I'm loving all the bed prep! Was it good in the end?!

7DPO here. It's funny, yesterday I woke up with the thought that it was only 2 more days until the earliest I could test (wtf?) and today I've woken up 100% convinced it's another dud anyway. Been reading about subfertility instead 😅

MintGreenLife · 30/08/2020 09:26

@Juno231 now I'm reading about subfertility too 😂 I'm CD22 now. Had EWCM yesterday, haven't spotted any yet today. Missed my OPK yesterday but I guess I'll do one today 🤷🏻‍♀️ Temp is still much lower than last cycle at 36.10 today. Not sure if these lower temps mean anything. We're heading off to start wedding prep on Wednesday. Just really want to ovulate before then, but I'm not holding my breath! X
