Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@MintGreenLife mine were grade 3 so I'm pretty happy they got rid of them! Funnily they didn't say a word about it impacting pregnancy in any way, only reason I know is through googling. The LEEP basically takes off a bit of the cervix too so weakens it potentially, hence the need for a stitch for some ladies.

My worst foof experience though was a cystoscopy I had for my chronic UTIs - aka a camera up my wee hole!

Pip1903 · 27/08/2020 13:38

@MintGreenLife @Elsie2021 thanks for advice ...will def see how the spotting goes so feel like af on way.
I do feel for you ladies as the waiting and uncertainty is so frustrating hoping for good news for u both soon x

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 13:51

@Juno231 we're cycle twins as well as health issue twins (that last one's not so good)! I too have struggled with reccurant UTIs from about the age of 17. At one point I was on antibiotics every month and just had a supply at home ready to go for when I got another. I didn't have to have what you had - but I did have a few tests including having radioactive fluid pumped through me to see if there was any issues with my kidneys/bladder. My UTIs have got better as I've gotten older, although I did have one my second cycle off the pill after a year or so without any.

That's disappointing they didn't tell you of the risks involved with potential early delivery. I suppose it wouldn't have made any difference anyway, as I was told but of course went ahead with the procedure regardless as what else can you do! X

@Pip1903 keep us up to date ☺️ X

Juno231 · 27/08/2020 14:09

@MintGreenLife oh really! I never had the radioactive fluid. I did have 6 months of antibiotics at one point and I've had two kidney infections over the years. Mine started around age 19 and only really started to die down after my colposcopy at age 23 - they said the procedure itself could have fixed it as I had very tight pelvic muscles that were trapping urine and therefore bacteria in the urethra and the camera obviously ruined that a bit lol.

I should probably get a female health physio sort that out for me at some point as an overly strong pelvic isn't a good thing, counterintuitively it makes it weaker in a way and can cause complications especially after having had kids. The last one I mentioned it to though said it's an easy fix with INTERNAL massage and considering I knew this woman I said there was no way I was letting her do that to me lol, way too awkward.

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 14:15

@Juno231 colposcopy sounds very uncomfortable/painful! The only thing the found with me is that the tube in or out of my kidney (can't recal) was dilated at the top so could be collecting bacteria there, I was told I would most likely find it less of an issue as I got older and that was the case, thank goodness. It was so awful though that every time I get one now I just feel so down about it as it takes me back to when I was getting them all the time and how horrible it was.

Glad you found that they improved. Oh gosh that sounds so strange! I did read something about similar massage to help stimulate your overies, but it just sounds so horrible! Probably won't be going down that route myself ha. It's good you know there could be a potential issue after having kids though as can then get help with it as soon as it's necessary so it hopefully doesn't become an issue for you. God the things we go through as women eh! X

Juno231 · 27/08/2020 14:21

@MintGreenLife yeah my physio used the example of trying to jump from a standing position vs jumping when already standing on tippy toes and therefore with already flexed calves. Ie if my pelvic floor is constantly tensed, when it actually is needed to do something then that reaction is much weaker than if it had been relaxed first.

Kidneys are so tricky, I didn't even realise you could have what you just described! In early March I spent some time in the hospital caring for my best friend as she suddenly went blind during a migraine. Turns out it was damage caused to the back of her brain by high blood pressure - which in turn was caused by a narrowing of a single vein in her left kidney!! The body is so complex it's mind boggling.

MintGreenLife · 27/08/2020 15:13

@Juno231 ahh that makes sense. That's a good day of describing it.

Oh wow that's completely crazy! How scary that must have been for your friend. I've just googled what I was told I have with my kidney and the images aren't nice ha. I didn't really realise it was an actual issue with a name...I assume they mustn't have been concerned about it with me as it's never been checked again and doesn't seem to cause me any issues now x

Well today was meant to be AF paying a visit. Did a PT this morning and got BFN. Feeling very warm today and had some crampiness over right ovary. Keep going to the loo but no sign of AF yet. Wish she would make an appearance or get a BFP on a test. Will try again tomorrow morning.

Baby dust to all!❤️

Elsie2021 · 27/08/2020 18:04

Good luck @mrsmacmc!! Do you know when you ovulated this cycle or is AF a prediction!

Elsie2021 · 27/08/2020 18:04

*?

mrsmacmc · 27/08/2020 18:28

@Elsie2021 I ovulated CD17 going by LH pee sticks. Today is the predicted AF start day and I'm usually bang on / regular cycle wise. Banging headache tonight to add to the mix ❤️

mrsmacmc · 27/08/2020 18:29

@Elsie2021 thank you! Body please let me know either way so can cope accordingly! 🤣 x

Juno231 · 28/08/2020 09:29

@mrsmacmc any AF updates?

Pip1903 · 28/08/2020 09:41

@mrsmacmc good luck!
I'm not so sure on implantation bleeding now ..still bleeding (well pink) everytime I wipe, but my cramps are def stronger than yday plus I'm having no other implantation symptoms.
Will just have to wait it out. I haven't tested as I think if was bfp I'd be more concerned with the bleeding if it stops by tomorrow think I will on sunday as af not actually due till Tuesday.
The positive side is my cycle seems more regular compared to the long cycle first month although if this is af it's slightly too early.
will keep you all updated, so grateful to be on this thread you are all great, hubby has no idea what I'm talking about 😂
Have a good weekend all x

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 10:28

Morning all. Feeling a bit rubbish today - CD20 and the little bit of EWCM I had for a few days has disappeared 🙄 OPKs are still super faint and BBT is still really low. I'm clearly not going to ovulate on a CD that's considered 'normal'. Really thought after I had a normal luteal phase last cycle and I finished the homeopathic detox I was doing things would be back on track but obviously not. Finding it hard not to feel low about it, and can already see myself giving up on DTD every other day like I have every cycle since we started TTC when I get to CD25+ with no ovulation 🤦🏻‍♀️

@mrsmacmc Hoping AF hasn't made an appearance, fingers crossed!

@MintGreenLife @Juno231 I've read your posts from yesterday and that sounds so scary but also it's amazing what they can do nowadays, I'm glad they managed to remove everything they needed to.

@Pip1903 Aw, i hope the bleeding stops for you and if AF is coming, hopefully she holds out a bit longer to give you a longer cycle. Fingers crossed you're able to test Sunday though, it's not over until AF turns up.
Haha, i know, so thankful for you all as well :D OH is just confused with it all, I'll say my cycle was 27 days and he'll say 'ah that's good then, you wanted that' I'm like, yeah that conversation isn't going any further as he has no idea lol bless his heart! xx

Flowerkm · 28/08/2020 10:39

@MintGreenLife I've just seen your post :( I'm so sorry your feeling rubbish about it all, i can see why especially after all the signs from last cycle. Sending you lots and lots luck and hoping the EWCM comes back.
Can you go and make yourself a nice hot bath or go and buy the biggest cake you can find and eat it? Cake xx

mrsmacmc · 28/08/2020 10:40

Morning all

@Juno231 - no appearance yet. I've got CB PT coming today from Amazon (they had a flash deal for the 3 pack digital down to £8.52)

@Pip1903 thank you, fingers crossed for you too. I get what you mean, didn't realise that men don't have a clue really about our monthly cycles.

Have a good weekend everyone hugs x

mrsmacmc · 28/08/2020 10:42

Thanks @Flowerkm she hasn't came yet crosses fingers my biggest frustration is I can't ask bio mum what she felt like when she fell pregnant with me - downside to being adopted and my mum having the menopause at 19. xx

Juno231 · 28/08/2020 10:42

@MintGreenLife I'm so sorry you're feeling down about this :( Would it help to call the GP and at least feeling you're getting the ball rolling on sorting it? Just tell them you have abnormal cycles that are X days long, that should be enough to be seen I think!

MintGreenLife · 28/08/2020 10:44

@Flowerkm Thanks ☺️ It's just hard not to feel low about it. It's weird, I'm not stressing thinking there's something wrong as I guess my body just needs time, but it's just frustrating as if we don't catch this cycle we are kinda screwed for the 'wedding' next year. We did have next cycle too as our last shot, but if this one is going to be long again like the last (and it certainly seems to be going that way) then this will be our last shot. I honestly don't know what we will do if it doesn't work out as I really don't want to stop but also not sure we can risk having to move the date again.

I've got the very unfun task today of putting in our mortgage application, as we've accepted an offer on our house and had an offer accepted on another. But we are having pizza later. I'm not drinking at the mo, but maybe I'll let myself have a wine 🤷🏻‍♀️ Starting to give up on everything 🙈 Xx

Thanks @Juno231 ☺️ I'm not sure if it'll be a good idea to add another thing to my plate right now. Think maybe I'll just try and get it off my mind until after our ceramony and little honeymoon. It's hard though when you're looking for EWCM and any other signs like a hawk! And then it's just a constant disappointment when you don't see what you want or things aren't going the right way. Last cycle I had EWCM on and off for over two weeks, it's just hard not to get fed up, and DTD every other day for weeks on end does start to feel like a chore, bit I feel like we really have to give it our best shot this cycle, so I guess we've just got to keep going.

Thank goodness I have you girls to chat to! Xx

Flowerkm · 28/08/2020 11:11

@mrsmacmc Yay on the PT coming today, that’s exciting 😊 Try and have a little look on different forums on here that might help you see what other people experienced. You got all of us to chat to as well.

@MintGreenLife It is a matter of time, that’s so unhelpful I know but it will get better. I don’t think I’d stop trying only because you can make it work if you fall pregnant over your wedding. It’s just weighing it all up and looking at the different scenarios and working out if it’s manageable. I wish there was a crystal ball that would show us our futures so we can stop worrying over these things..

Ah wow. Congrats on the offers that’s exciting but also I can imagine very stressful. Hoping it all goes straightforward for you both.
Enjoy the pizza and have a glass of wine, you need it xx

Juno231 · 28/08/2020 11:15

@MintGreenLife oh fun regarding mortgage application! Be prepared for long lead times, the banks are being very slow atm. When would you hope to complete?

Did I mention that we've decided to just rent out our flat and buy the house we bid on regardless? We just need our bank to agree to that change in our budget and then hopefully the seller agrees for us to proceed. Nerve wrecking though as I really want the place!
