Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@MintGreenLife hm it seems a bit premature. If you'd ovulated I'd think CD22 has more potential actually. I'd carry on on the assumption that you havent yet, until a proper temp shift can be seen. Sorry for the wishy washy answer!

Speaking of temps, after the big dip yday it's luckily shot back up to the highest temp yet I think. Fingers crossed 🤞

MintGreenLife · 01/09/2020 08:49

@Juno231 thanks, it's a wishy washy chart 😂 I wasn't convinced by what FF was saying either tbh!

That's great, sounds hopeful 🤞🏼 Will keep my fingers crossed for you xx

@Juno231 lots more EWCM today, so clearly haven't ovulated! X

@MintGreenLife ah in a way I was hoping CD22 was it for you! I've attached my latest chart, it looks quite similar to my June one actually, down to the dip at 8 DPO.

MintGreenLife · 01/09/2020 09:59

@Juno231 argh I know, would have been so helpful if it had been! Definitely facing ovulation over the time we're at my sister-in-laws now, or later, if later that would be fine as we'll be on our honeymoon, but that's not until next Monday, and would also mean very late ovulation again.

Your chart looks great! Interesting that you had EWCM for six days, I've had it now for around 9 days, but the first 3 days was mixed with creamy and very little of it, so maybe I shouldn't have counted that. Cervix still hasn't gone soft though, who knows what's going on! x

Juno231 · 01/09/2020 10:01

@MintGreenLife yeah that was new to me - normally it's just for 2-3 days before OD. Although saying that I just looked at the chart from last month and I def logged EWCM on CD12 (OD was on CD17). So maybe this is normal for me !

MintGreenLife · 01/09/2020 10:04

@Juno231 think lots of EWCM is probably a good sign :) in my case from past cycles I took it to mean my body was trying to ovulate and not quite making it, from the stop start EWCM for a few weeks, not sure what that means. Really hope it happens in the next day or two as then I guess that would be normal-ish after 6-7 days of proper EWCM x

Elsie2021 · 01/09/2020 10:15

@Juno231 I wish my chart looked liked yours! It’s so clear!

Juno231 · 01/09/2020 10:24

@Elsie2021 I have been lucky with them so far! This is only my third one though so I'm sure I'll have a horrible one before the year is up Grin

@MintGreenLife yes I'm not complaining - I take lots of EPO to make sure I get it in the first place! Before March I think I only noticed EWCM once since I came off the pill in Oct and since I started taking supplements I get it every cycle now :)

MintGreenLife · 01/09/2020 10:28

@Juno231 I got it for 2/3 days in my first cycle, but then AF came a few days later! Does make me wonder what all the EWCM says about what's going on with me! I tried EPO briefly for one cycle but I worried I was taking too many supplements so I stopped x

My temp has dropped down to 35.87 this morn! So am hoping today might be ovulation day 🤞🏼 That would be very helpful as we are going away today. Will try to get OH to DTD before we go!

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 02/09/2020 08:45

Had loads of EWCM first thing too - I don't usually see it until later in the day, so taking this to be a positive sign also. Hoping I get a positive OPK today as think you can ovulate the same day as your LH surge 🤔 To be honest even if it happens tomorrow instead of today I'll be thrilled 🤞🏼

OP posts:
Elsie2021 · 02/09/2020 09:45

Fingers crossed for you @MintGreenLife!!

I had peak OPK yesterday and day before, but no temp rise this morning :(

MintGreenLife · 02/09/2020 10:11

@Elsie2021 think ovulation can happen 12-48 hours after peak OPK, so could be today is ovulation day and you'll get your rise tomorrow :)

OP posts:
Elsie2021 · 02/09/2020 11:17

Just did another OPK and still peaking! Does that mean I am still trying to ovulate? Or could my peak just last a long time?

Flowerkm · 02/09/2020 16:53

Hey everyone ☺️ sorry for being quiet. Hectic few days with our 9 month old pup. She ate some ibuprofen from a closed packet in my bag (dog mum guilt is real - still no idea how she got them if Im honest but i guess a pup can get anything, learnt the hard way there) So after 4 days at the vets she is now home where she belongs. Literally cried for 4 days straight but shes doing ok and playing with all her toys, so fingers crossed she stays like that.

Ive been reading your posts daily so feel all caught up but just wasn't in the right head frame to reply. Nothing exciting my end, CD8 for me ☺️ xxx

Juno231 · 02/09/2020 18:11

@MintGreenLife ah that's brilliant! I hope you get your peak OPK today and tell tale temp shift tomorrow!

@Elsie2021 could be a long peak - I'd expect a temp rise tomorrow though otherwise it sounds like your body is trying to but hasn't managed this time round.

10DPO - BFN this morning as I caved! Had that pinching groin /uterus sensation all day today and my resting heart went up so I can't help but still feel hopeful. Even though I know I shouldn't be symptom spotting...

Juno231 · 02/09/2020 18:21

Oh and I had my progesterone test yesterday and it came back today at 62, where anything over 30 means you've ovulated. Not only do I def ovulate but seems like low progesterone during the LP shouldn't be a problem for me! It's made OH worry the problem is on his side though - which I weirdly enjoyed him say because I think that's the first time he'd even considered it?!

MintGreenLife · 02/09/2020 19:09

@Juno231 no positive OPK today unfortunately, also we DTD but kind of messed it up...won't go into detail ha. Hopefully we will manage again tomorrow as won't be able to on Friday.

That's great news about your progesterone test! Do you think your OH would consider getting some tests done? x

@Flowerkm ohhh bless her, I remember when we had ours as a pup and they do just get into everything! I once momentarily left a bottle of antibacterial spray on the floor while cleaning and turned around and she was chewing on the spray nozzle! I picked her up and threw her into the sink and started running the tap and trying to rinse her mouth out, so ridiculous but you worry so much when they are pups. Well done for noticing she had eaten some, as many wouldn't have. Glad to hear she is OK now :) xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 02/09/2020 20:02

@MintGreenLife 😂 aww, oh god, they really do! I just said to the vet do everything and anything, just make sure shes ok!
So cheeky but so grateful she's doing better. Just watching her and re-doing bloods in a week to check they've all still ok 🤞🏻

How are you feeling about the big day? 😀 xx

TheHotelCalifornia · 02/09/2020 20:15

Hey guys! Thank you all sooooo much for the lovely warm welcomes and apologies for dropping in then leaving, crazy busy with work but all good now! Just been catching up with all your posts, @MintGreenLife your hair is GOALS!! So, so beautiful!

Still chilling out over here on CD 98...anyone want a virtual party when I reach 100!? I'm going to make a DRs appt early next week to see what's going on, we've recently moved so I had to sign up for a new Drs which has taken time but hopefully will be able to get at least a phone appointment. Really trying not to stress about it but I'm finding it a struggle. My highest peak on my OPK according to the Femometer app was 56%. No high temps apart from a couple of mornings after I had a couple glasses of wine so think that must be that. Other than that...tumbleweed. We've been BD every few days, had a few days like I felt my period was coming but nothing. I've got some cheap pregnancy tests coming tomorrow just to check, but I really don't think I am. Keep telling myself to be positive because it's relatively early days, I (think) we're relatively healthy and youngish (32/33) we've never smoked, we drink but not huge amounts, we exercise...hmmm.

Is anyone else 100 days+ post pill, no period? Please make me feel better :( Sending love and positivity to you all! x

Kay00 · 02/09/2020 20:25

Hi Ladies!

It's been a while since I posted on here, so to update:

Im on cycle 3, and now officially trying Grin.

1st cycle: 42 days long, Ov CD 32, LP 10 days
2nd cycle: 34 days long, Ov CD26, LP 8 days

I know i'm not long off the pill but I would like to shorten my follicular phase and lengthen my Luteal phase, so i'm taking:

  • Seven Seas pre-pregnancy vits (folic acid + vit D)
  • EPO (for extra CM... I had none in cycle 2)
  • Vit B complex (high dose B12 and B6) + 500mg Vit C

I have taken Vit B up until cycle day 10 (I am taking a break until I ovulate in the hope it brings ovulation forward) and will continue after ovulation in the hope it extends my LP by a few days.

I will also stop taking EPO at ovulation.

Phew!

I am currently on CD 13, and no sign of ovulation... so we'll see if it works Smile. I really want my Ov to happen soon so I can start my first TWW!

@Juno231 I have my fingers crossed that you have just tested too early, and your resting heart rate is a really good sign, you can't imagine that!!

@MintGreenLife I hope you get your ovulation before you start travelling, how exciting that you will be celebrating your big day soon xx

@Flowerkm - eek!! I have two dogs, both adults but I adopted the girl just last week... and in that time she has stolen packaging from the recycling bin, a butter packet from the kitchen side and a whole bar of chocolate from my desk drawer!! Luckily I have intervened before she ate anything she shouldn't have... they are such a worry!

Flowerkm · 02/09/2020 20:44

@TheHotelCalifornia sorry to hear you're now CD98 but I mean a virtual party sounds fun 😂
Think a drs app is good and hopefully can talk about options or something to help move things along a bit. Hoping you get AF soon.

@Kay00 Congrats on officially trying 😀 thats super exciting. Sounds like you're all sorted with your vitamins, Ive read a lot about the ones you've mentioned and they do seem to work so hopefully you see a difference :)
Aww bless, what a cheeky one! They're into everything! Xx

Juno231 · 03/09/2020 10:16

@TheHotelCalifornia wow. well done for still laughing about it! I'm glad you'll get to talk to a GP - make sure they don't just dismiss you though.

@kay00 congrats on graduating to TTC! All your supplements and things sound spot on.

@MintGreenLife any updates?

Another BFN for me today - at 11 DPO that's relatively conclusive I'd say!
