Hi everyone,

Me and my husband have made the decision to try for a baby - we had a talk last month after I thought I might be pregnant (we weren't actively trying) and after 12 years together feel that now is the right time.

I'm feeling really excited and a little nervous - I know it may take a while and I just want to be as prepared as possible and be doing as many of the right things as I can.

What do people recommend for trying to get pregnant? Is anyone else in the same boat and would like to keep in touch/progress?

I'm due to finish AF in around 2 days and due to ovulate around 28th according to my tracker app - I've got folic acid and vitamin D arriving tomorrow that I can start taking, what else can I be doing to prepare as much as possible? I know it sounds silly, but do we just start 'trying' as soon as my period is over?

Look forward to speaking to you all soon!

Thanks,

Bee x

I would be more savvy when we have a child. I would happily take secondhand things that were still in perfect working order. Xxx

SaraVB · 01/06/2020 14:42

@LennyAndToots @Peach1204 I agree and you wouldn't need to get everything at once but still good to have an idea of some of the types of things that might be nice to have and the costs if you do have to buy new. Some are obvious but I did get a couple of ideas.

Yes definitely agree with secondhand things.. especially baby clothes that are only worn for a month or 2.

I've just had my video appointment with the fertility clinic so thought I would share some advice on ovulation tests.

He said I need to have bloods done to check I'm ovulating, so I asked if the home OPKs are reliable. He said said it depends which ones you use, and said that they use the clear blue ones at the clinic. He's still going to get my bloods done to double check I'm ovulating, but when I said that I use the clear blue ones and told him the days I get the smileys (I have roughly a 36 day cycle) he said that it's not necessarily a concern but they will do the bloods for their records.

@Poppyismyfavourite I know what you mean, I'm going absolutely crazy this tww. When are you due? Are you going to test early? I think it's a good idea to focus on what you can do if AF arrives so you can have some vague sort of 'good side' to it. Our house set ups do sound very similar!

Peach1204 · 01/06/2020 15:23

@SaraVB I did just go through the Asda website and have priced up a few things! The biggy is a pram/car seat/stroller in one but you can get one for like £400 which I think is good considering some are over £1000s.

@Daffodil21 that's good to know about the clear blue tests. Have they given you a rough idea when your blood test might be?

Xxx

MintGreenLife · 01/06/2020 15:54

Thanks for the update @Daffodil21 glad your appointment went well and that they are going to check your bloods for you. That's interesting re the clear blue OPKs. Several people have reccomended them to me, but I wasn't sure about the cost with needing time to get to grips with my cycle after coming off the pill. Might get them for my next cycle though ☺️

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 15:59

@Peach1204 no, they just said when the GPS are doing them. He said that we don't need treatment atm as we haven't been trying long enough 🙄 and if we did get ivf then it wouldn't be until September next year because it has to be 2 years since a previous pregnancy. I thought maybe the MCs would affect treatment and it seems they have. He said if bloods come back and show I'm not ovulating then they can give you meds to make you. So we just go on as we are...

@AlisonLew15 I think one is fine in TWW. I don't drink during it usually but actually last week I did have a mini bottle of wine with dinner once. I did feel a little guilty though. I think the thing to bear in mind is, if you got a positive pregnancy test, would you mind what you drank in the TWW? I'm a bit funny about it because I accidentally drank during in TWW once (I thought it was my period coming but it was actually implantation bleeding) and it turned out to be a blighted ovum so never properly developed. I was so drunk though, it wasn't just the one and I've wondered if my boozy night was the reason ever since. Now I've decided it isn't worth the risk, but I'll certainly be having some wine when AF arrives! Happy anniversary btw!!

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 16:02

@MintGreenLife it didn't go as expected actually. He kept saying we don't have fertility issues which I found hard to believe. But I suppose he must see people who have serious problems. And I suppose I should take comfort in the fact he isn't worried.

I think they're definitely worth the cost, usually a box goes across a couple of months for me (sometimes even longer) but you might smash through them a bit for the first couple of months..!

Peach1204 · 01/06/2020 16:06

@Daffodil21 I didn't know there were tablets that helped with ovulating. It's good to know your options although September next year seems far away. I hope you get a BFP before then. Xxx

Mrskcam · 01/06/2020 16:07

@Peach1204 we bought a car seat and iso fix from someone who was selling them on our village page, we got it for half price in great condition ... figured if the person lives a couple houses down then they wouldn't dare sell us something faulty or bad! Something to think about as you can pretty much guarantee it will be in good condition if it's from someone that you have to see regularly

LennyAndToots · 01/06/2020 16:15

@AlisonLew15 my mum went on a hen night before realising she was pregnant with me!

Amethyst2502 · 01/06/2020 16:18

Hi all,
Finally got round to posting after lurking for a while!
Me and my partner (both 26) have decided to TTC our first baby, we originally were planning on waiting a couple of years but after having a big talk have decided we would rather try sooner rather than later. I came off the pill on 22nd May and my withdrawal bleed finished last Thursday so we are all set to begin trying! Today though I have started bleeding again, I assume that it's too soon to be my period, guessing it's just my body trying to get back to normal?

AlisonLew15 · 01/06/2020 16:31

@LennyAndToots @Daffodil21 thanks for responding both. I'm not a big drinker, just made the exception for one glass as it was a special occasion. I think I'll definitely be staying away from the fizz for the rest of my TWW.
@Daffodil21 my friend has fertility issues and she's been given the tablets to help her ovulate but she's decided not to take them. Not really sure why. Is there increased chance of twins when taking them?

Poppyismyfavourite · 01/06/2020 16:38

@Daffodil21 AF is due Saturday, and I've promised myself I'll wait until then!! I might cave and test Friday... I feel like a really faint /inconclusive test would be even worse tbh...
My plan if negative is to drink a lot of wine, and then do the garage roof! (not right after lol)

Poppyismyfavourite · 01/06/2020 16:41

@AlisonLew15 is it clomid? If so then yes it increases chance of multiples. I'd love to have twins, although I know the chances are pretty small!
but I've googled what increases your chances and clomid is one of the things that comes up. As is having twins in the family (my maternal gran is a twin so you never know!)

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 16:46

@Poppyismyfavourite I'm due sat too!! Also planning wine if no AF. Ah you're much more disciplined than me - I'm definitely testing Wednesday (which has already moved forward from Thursday!) and tbh I'm slightly tempted to test tomorrow which is a little ridiculous. I often need the loo in the middle of the night, so if I happen to have a long enough sleep tonight for FMU at a normal time tomorrow morning then I probably will end up testing tbh. It'll just be a cheapie test, but I've got digital ready if needed. What tests do you have?

@AlisonLew15 I have no idea about the ovulation meds tbh!

Mrskcam · 01/06/2020 17:07

@Poppyismyfavourite @Daffodil21 eeeek I'm so excited for you both to test!!

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 17:16

@Mrskcam I think AF might be on its way a little earlier than expected. I've been having a little bit of blood after going to the loo. To start with I hopefully thought it could be implantation bleeding, but now I'm not so sure

Poppyismyfavourite · 01/06/2020 17:25

@Daffodil21 oh no, right after your last message that's too cruel!

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 17:32

@Poppyismyfavourite yeah I went to the loo after my last message!! Fucksaaaaakeeeeee. Probably still going to test tomorrow though 🙈 but will probably also get the wine chilling!

SaraVB · 01/06/2020 17:37

@Poppyismyfavourite Your roof comment really cracked me up hahaha Keeping my fingers for you for this weekend.

My OH was convinced that we would have twins as he has a lot of them on his side of the family.. he was quite disappointed when I mentioned that its the mother's genes that matter hahah

@Daffodil21 Really sorry.. hope it's not AF and if it is that you get to enjoy some wine and a break from thinking about TTC.

I'm not due until the 11th but hate this TWW. Last month I managed to put off testing until about 11 DPO although I swore I wouldn't test early. This month I ordered some cheap tests online, just to distract me and hopefully stop me from using the expensive ones too soon. Sadly the post has been crap ever since the lockdown started so no sign of them yet.

Peach1204 · 01/06/2020 17:38

@Mrskcam great idea! I agree someone wouldn't sell you something if they are going to see you often! Xxx

Poppyismyfavourite · 01/06/2020 17:40

@Daffodil21 well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - it's not over til it's over.
I'm going to the shops later - will definitely buy some nice wine, maybe even prosecco as a "consolation prize".
I bought a combo-box with 40 LH tests and 10 hcg. I think it's the femometer brand - you use them with the app.

Daffodil21 · 01/06/2020 17:48

Thanks @Poppyismyfavourite my fingers are crossed for you too.

Is there ever such a thing as a break from TTC @SaraVB ? I haven't found it yet 😂 thanks though. Hope your tests arrive soon!

Poppyismyfavourite · 01/06/2020 17:54

@SaraVB I've always had a weird feeling I'd have twins... But at the moment I'd be overjoyed with one obviously! The twin genes in our family don't seem that strong... None of my gran, mum or aunt actually had twins themselves (although my mum said once she was convinced my sister - youngest of 3 - wouldbe )

Summertime1992 · 01/06/2020 20:02

Welcome newcomers and good luck :)

@Daffodil21hopefully its just spotting, fingers crossed for you

I'm on my ovulation day today as have have been getting twinges in my right side and more CM egg white today so will be heading into the dreaded 2WW tomorrow.

Good luck on everyone due to test soon :).
