Hi FC2007, and welcome.

Ready · 17/03/2007 13:50

Roskva - Reusable nappies hey?? We've been talking about those not that long ago on the ttc first baby thread - I had been propaganda-ed (doubt that's even a word) into thinking that reusables were just as bad for the environment as disposables... I have started looking into reusables a bit more recently... would you reccommend using them?? DH and I have chatted about it, and he isn't convinced ... so I'll need some good reccommendations to convince him I reckon.
Sorry to hear your washing machine went on the blink - Ours is getting louder and louder by the load, so I am wondering when it will give up. Glad you are ok though! And well done on the 7lbs in total, puts me to utter shame

FC2007 - Good to see you here! I have been really lax actually, and the realisation that we are going home to see family and friends has kicked in, so after tonight (going out for dinner) I will be taking it much more seriously!! So I will do my best to help you. Good luck with the weightwatchers - a friend of mine gave me all her books when they rebranded some years ago, so I count points when I am trying to shed a few lbs, but don't go to the meetings. Good luck!

Ready, I don't think I'm an eco nutter, but I was really horrified by the amount of waste going out after dd arrived, and the biodegradeable disposables are outrageously expensive! So I use a collection of prefolds (cheap, quick to dry, not too bulky, but not particularly cute), swaddlebees (horribly expensive, take a lot longer to dry, not bulky at all and very cute), clwt twt (WAHM bamboo nappies, mid price, not too bulky, take forever to dry and very cute) plus a load of assorted cheap things I found on ebay before they banned the sale of second hand cloth nappies. Dirty nappies go in a lidded plastic bucket with a laundry net inside, when the net is full (about every 3 days) it gets lifted out and plonked in the washing machine. Easy until the machine gives up! I also spend less on baby wipes, because I use soap, water and pieces of cloth that go in with the nappies. I line dry things and finish them off in the dryer or on a radiator (or in the case of the bamboo nappies, both). I can't really say whether our electricity bill has gone up massively because the per unit cost of electricity has gone up, and I can't be bothered (am to scared to?!) to sit down and do the maths, and in the grander scheme of the amount of washing a tiny person generates, the nappy loads are probably only a tiny percentage of the increased water consumption! Until the new washing machine arrives next week, I'm back to disposables, and I have to say, it feels like putting money in the bin. I have seen various figures suggesting that cloth nappies save you between £500 and a £1000 for one child until potty training, and that figure goes up if you use the same nappies for the next child - I'll see if I can dig out the figures, or Flamesparrow and Makesachange might know (they both sell cloth nappies). Also lots of local authorities have incentive schemes for real nappy users - I got £60 back from our council.

Ready · 18/03/2007 13:31

Roskva - I wouldn't think you were an eco-nutter. Not at all. I am a bit of an eco-worrier - I try my best to do my "bit" for the environment, but I know that I don't do enough.
I really like the idea of reusables now, but convincing DH is going to be tough. Even with the financial reward - He wants to be able to get involved with changing and everything, and is worried that reusables will not be as easy.
We don't have a tumble-drier, I prefer to line/clothes horse dry everything - again, doing my bit for the environment, and one of my concerns is that I will need to buy twice the amount of reusables to cover the times when they are still line drying - IYSWIM?

Anyway, I have kind of hi-jacked the thread here... oops.

Went out for dinner last night, had dessert, but no starter! Going to have a light, but not overly strict day today, then super strict from tomorrow onwards!! fingers crossed I can stick to it!!

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 18/03/2007 14:12

Well, my mother's day pressie is rum truffles, and I'm not going to let dh eat all of them!

To continue the nappy hijack, reusables look more daunting at first, but they've come a long way from terry squares, and some are as easy as disposables. When the time comes, I will send you some for you to try, if you like, Ready.

cedar12 · 18/03/2007 16:07

I banned chocolates this mothers day but then went and bought myself a bag of maltesers last night
On the nappy front I didnt manage washable for very long with dd but want to give them a real go next time, If it ever happens.
My sil used terries for but hers until they were about 20 months with no problems and that was using old fashioned plastic pants!

Ready · 18/03/2007 18:47

Well, I have no cause to celebrate today so I didn't get any chocolate either. Which is of course good, in one way!

Cedar - Enjoy your maltesers and it will happen for you soon!! Hang in there!

Roskva - That's so sweet of you, and I am hoping that it won't be too long before I can take you up on your offer! I love the idea of fluffy nappies on my baby!! Please let it be soon!!

Next week will be a good week! Super strict!

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 18/03/2007 22:26

If it hadn't been for the rum truffles, I would have been good today. Oh, well. Tomorrow is going to the day from hell, as I have a hospital appointment at a place an hour's drive away, and the weather is promising to be awful. I'm not sure yet whether dh and dd are coming with me. So, wish me luck!

cedar12 · 19/03/2007 12:53

Roskva good luck with your appointment. Fed up this morning weighed my self bloody 2 lb heavier since last thursday so met my friend for coffee and had a big bit of lemon cake. I am doomed to be woobley for ever

Ready · 19/03/2007 13:17

Cedar you are not doomed!! Come on now, when you fall off the wagon, you just pick yourself up and hop back on!! No more naughty treats for the rest of today!!

Roskva Good luck tomorrow! Hope you have someone to go with you, not just for the weather, but for all the waiting around that happens in hospitals. Oh, and take a packed lunch, that way you won't be tempted by the naughty stuff.

FC2007 Hope you are starting the week as you mean to go on!?

--- Ok, I know I am being drill sergeant, but I need to be strict with myself, and so if I am going to get nagged at by me, so should all of you

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 19/03/2007 18:34

Hi there, well I have been very good today. Left dd with dh, as she is poorly and snow was forecast (much to his disgust - as I went out the door he said "Why did you have to make this appointment?", yeah, right, like I deliberately chose to have an annoying, irritating and occasionally painful problem!!!), so I fretted the entire time, rushed back to have the baby thrust into my arms without so much of a "how did it go, darling?". Anyway, didn't eat anything while I was out, cooked a healthy lunch when I got home, and spent the afternoon sorting out the washing, which I took to a local hotel to do. So now I'm starving, and determined not to eat before supper. I'm also in a foul mood, so sorry about the rant. I have another hospital appointment even farther away on Friday, so I've arranged for a friend to come with me to look after dd while I'm there.

Ready · 19/03/2007 19:09

oh Roskva what a thoroughly horrible day! No need to apologise for ranting on here!! That's what we are here for, lend an ear, and all that
I hope that you get sorted with your medical worries soon. Sounds like your DH isn't being a darling today is he. Tut.
Oh, and a ruddy great big pat on the back for not caving into the pressures of your day and chomping on a stack of chocolate!! I might have done!!

I have had a good day, so far only had 9 weight watchers points (allowed 18) so with chicken fajitas on the menu for dinner, I should have points spare for a chocolate biscuit with my ovaltine tonight!!

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 19/03/2007 19:12

Now that sounds good, Ready. I wanted to go out to eat, but it's too cold and windy to take dd out as she already has a cold. Her little feet were freezing even in her woolly leggings this afternoon. So we're having turkey slices with new potatoes and whatever other veg I can find. I might feel the need to open a bottle of wine to go with it, unless the antibiotics state otherwise.

FC2007 · 20/03/2007 12:04

Well I started the weekend by cutting out the crap (just beacuse I fancy it hot chololtes and beacuse they are there biscuits ) and the obviously fatty stuff eg hard cheese. Also took long way to bus and walk at lunchtime.

Looking forward to tomorrow when i start weight watchers when I can have a more formalised structure.

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 20/03/2007 14:28

I know what you mean, FC2007 - it's amazing how much rubbish creeps into my diet if I let it. I am trying very hard not to eat between meals, and to eat healthy meals.

Ready · 20/03/2007 16:45

Roskva Did you have the wine in the end?? I think you deserve a little bit of a break at the moment, what with your medical worries, broken washing machine and poorly DD.

FC2007 - Good luck with the weightwatchers, we will have to compare how much has changed!! The Just Because They Are There Biscuits are the worst kind - although once you are on WW, you will be able to include treats into your points, so you won't deprive yourself completely!

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 20/03/2007 18:03

No, I didn't have the wine, because I remembered I had to get the car out to retrieve (sp?) the washing from the hotel dryer. It's only just round the corner of foot but it's all the way round a one way system in the car, and it would have been sod's law to find the only bobby on the beat in Pembrokeshire!

Anyway, my new washing machine arrived today, yippee, so I ate 2 packets of crisps to celebrate (slap on wrist needed!).

Ready · 20/03/2007 18:59

PMSL at the 2 packets of Celebratory Crisps.

I have been averagely good today, although baked raisin muffins, and ate one, while it was still warm with a cup of tea, and watched Eggheads... de-lish.

Still under budget, that's what I have been calling my points, my budget. Bang on budget yesterday, hopeully stay under today!

DH out tonight, so think I will have porridge for tea comfort food.

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 20/03/2007 20:32

Well I'm about to cook haddock in the oven with a pesto topping, but I'm not sure it's going to go with sweet potatoes, but I've no normal spuds left. Maybe couscous would be better?

Ready · 20/03/2007 22:01

Darn, sorry I wasn't on to give a suggestion. I would have had it with sweet potatoes or couscous... either way would have been de-lish!! What did you have?

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 21/03/2007 09:40

In the end, polenta, as I had no couscous. And the topping end up being breadcrumbs with sweet pepper antipasto, 'cos the pesto was off (I didn't think it had been open that long ). Surprisingly, it was actually quite nice!

Ready · 21/03/2007 12:27

I don't think I have ever had polenta... is it tasty? And low in fat??

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 21/03/2007 22:25

Polenta is a form of cornmeal, it's popular in northern Italy. As far as I know, it has little or no fat and it is low in gluten, so it is good for people who can't eat wheat. It is also very easy: pour 100g polenta into 1/2 litre of boiling water and stir until it is thick. You can eat it mushy (like mashed potato) or let it set and slice it! On its own it is fairly tasteless, it needs herbs/spices or something with a good flavour to go with it. I like it because it makes a change from spuds/pasta/rice (especially when I forget to put them on in time!).

cedar12 · 22/03/2007 08:09

Seen polenta in the shop and wondered what to do with it. Might give it a go.

Ready · 22/03/2007 13:18

I think I will give it a go! Sounds yummy either way. Do you serve it with roasted veggies??
