5 months off pill, still no period

Hi ladies, I came off the pill (Yasmin) over 5 months ago now and have had no period. Twice in this 5 month window I have had very, very light spotting that has happened for 3 days each time (but it really was super light). I have had bloods taken that came up "normal" but what the hell does that mean given depending in when in a cycle they were looking for a normal result would alter accordingly depending on where in the cycle you were!

I have a GP appointment in 2 weeks (which is 6 months no period) and would love some help with what question I should be asking in terms of next steps.

Also, have any of you had to wait this long for your first period?

I am 32, TTC#1, was on Yasmin for 8 years and another pill for 5 years before that.

Thanks.

I feel your pain. I stopped my pill in October and have no sign of AF at all :( This Saturday will be cd100!! So fed up. I've had two trips to my gp so far, one at 8 weeks with no af then went back at 12 weeks with no af as they suggested on my first visit. Had blood tests which, like yours, came back "normal". Last trip I was told that the next step from the blood tests is scans so I am planning on going back this week to find out more and ask for a referral to get the scans done. I will probably get told to wait wait wait but a 100 day cycle just isn't right!

Ladies, thank god I found you! I have been going out of my mind. I took my last pill in September and nothing- not even slight spotting.

My dr wouldn't even see me, I had to have a telephone appointment as it wasn't classed as significant enough to be seen. She said when it's been 9 months to make an appointment to see her. I'm worried and feel like if I go and see her before she will just brush me off

bambinibop · 19/01/2015 20:43

Hi - just to say that I was on yasmin too and stopped taking it to ttc. I conceived my dd 8 months after I had stopped taking the pill and in that time I only had 1 or 2 random bleeds. I was using temperature charts to see of was ovulating after about 6 months of nothing happening and I only ovulated on the 8th month and got pregnant.

What I'm trying to say is I think this sounds quite normal and don't panic! Definitely see gp if you're concerned but I think your body does just take a while to start ovulating regularly again. I heard it can take up to a year to get your period back properly.

Have you tried seeing if you are ovulating?

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 20:43

The appointment system at my docs is odd so I never actually get to see my own doc. When I went at 8weeks without I basically explained how long it had been and what was normal and what wasn't. The advice at that point was wait until 12 weeks then they would start investigations. Think the blood tests were pointless though, based on what I've read on here and other places if they aren't done at the right time in your cycle they won't tell you anything.
I did have a glimmer of hope on cd58 when I noticed ewcm and rushed out to by some ovulation tests. I got a peak result so I'm hoping I did it but who knows....!

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 20:45

I'm hoping I did ovulate I mean!

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 20:49

I don't have any advice, but I came off the pill around October / early November, had a withdrawal bleed and hadn't had a period, so went to my GP 11 days ago and he put me on Norithisterone for 10 days in order to induce another 'withdrawal bleed'. He told me to come back around 5 days into my withdrawal bleed as there is only a short window in which to test the LH and the FSH. I may be wrong, but I think that if you weren't in this window when you were tested that the blood test will have been valid? Unless they were testing for something else?

I'm new to all this: I'm 32 TTC#1 (well, I say trying, but we haven't really got started yet due to lack of AF!) and I was on Mycrogynon for about 10 years and Loestrin for about 5, so aaaages!

Like I say, I can't offer any advice, only my story so far, but we sound very similar!

Also, I called an acupuncturist earlier, as I've read some interesting things about acupuncture and fertility, and have arranged my first session for Friday 30th, so I'm quite excited about that!

Ginfizz90 · 19/01/2015 20:49

I have tried ovulation cheap tests from the Internet however, because of the lack of periods i get fed up doing them all the time. The first one I did I thought I had ov pains but the line was a little fainter than the control line (not much mind you) so I assumed negative- the next day was even fainter. So confusing

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 20:50

Sorry- meant to say 'invalid' rather than valid. Knew I should have proof-read!

Thisisanoutrage · 19/01/2015 20:54

I had this after coming off Yasmin, 5 months and no sign off a period. However, i was also irregular before being on the pill. I googled natural remedies to encourage ovulation and came across agnus castus liquid. It worked for me twice.

Having read warnings that it can be quite strong stuff, i decided to chance it, the waiting was torture.

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 20:54

The aim of the blood test was just to check hormone levels, don't know too much more than that.

I was also on loestrin for a long time, probably 8 years at least and before that microgynon for another 7. Will be interesting to hear how you get on with the acupuncture, I've also read some interesting things.

The last gp I saw said that she suspected that due to being on the pill for so long my endometrial lining was thinner and taking a long time to plump up enough for me to have a period. I just wish I had come off sooner!

coolaschmoola · 19/01/2015 20:55

I spent 8 years on Yasmin, came off the pill to ttc number 1, no periods. Turned out I had pcos, the pill had regulated my hormones. I put four stone on in six months. Four years of fertility treatment and I finally got my bfp at 32.

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 20:57

Ginfizz I know what you mean about the ov tests. During Nov and Dec, I did soooo much POAS (ov tests and preg tests). Also so very sick of checking my knickers every few hours and going through all my white and light pants in my drawers, and avoiding the black underwear just in case I missed anything!

I was really fortunate that my doctor gave me Norethisterone, as I was fully expecting to be sent away and told to come back in a few months. I stopped taking it yesterday, so am awaiting the withdrawal bleed now, then I have to make another appointment.

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 20:58

I never had irregular periods before the pill (from what I can remember) and no other symptoms of pcos that I have read about. It's a very frustrating mystery at the moment!

Ginfizz90 · 19/01/2015 21:01

I was always very regular before going on the pill. What annoys me most is conflicting gps. Mine won't see me until 9 months no periods and by the sounds of it others are 12 weeks or 6months

ApplesTheHare · 19/01/2015 21:04

Joey I'm 31 with a 4.5mo dd, and was on and off the pill for 15 years before ttc. My periods were all over the place whenever I was off it, and once took 9 months to start again. Always tested 'normal' but was worried nothing would happen when we finally decided to ttc. Came off the pill last time and periods never came back but I was pregnant within 4 months, so no period doesn't necessarily mean you can't conceive. Good luckThanks

Inasimilarboat · 19/01/2015 21:04

I came off the pill 9 months ago and my periods are still not regular. I have phases of nothing at all and then weeks where I am spotting lightly every day. Blood tests have all been normal and I have an appointment for 13th Feb for scans.

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 21:08

I have no idea what my cycle was like before going on the pill, but I was a late starter. I didn't start my periods until about 14 and then I remember after starting I stopped and didn't have periods for about a year. I just can't ever remember periods before the pill, though I obviously had them. This might be why my GP didn't ask any more questions and wants me to have the tests; I don't know.

Ginfizz90 · 19/01/2015 21:27

I'm going to make a normal non emergency appointment with my dr which will be in 6 weeks time. (Closest they do) and if it comes before then that would be bloomin lovely. In the mean time I'm going to research natural remedies that could bring it on. Does anybody know of any? P.s we should all keep in touch

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 21:32

I would really like to stay in touch and keep up to date on how you are all getting on. I've been feeling like the only person on the planet stuck in this situation!!

Ginfizz90 · 19/01/2015 21:36

Me too polly. Feel like a weights been lifted already- haha never know we may all get our AF tomorrow now!?

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 21:44

We can hope!! Smile

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 21:46

We should definitely stay in touch. I've been driving myself crazy with all the 'what ifs' and Googling! Have been lurking on here, reading loads of threads and not feeling like I really 'fit' into any of them, so it's a relief to find a 'base' and 'similar' people!

In terms of herbal remedies, I have found two, ordered them, but not touched them yet... therefore this is definitely NOT a recommendation! But here they are:

Black Cohosh
Dong Quai

I have them both sitting next to me as I type! Here's the link that I found:

natural-fertility-info.com/how-to-get-your-period-back.html

and

www.soulcysters.net/showthread.php/82782-Does-Black-Cohosh-induce-periods

I ordered them both from Holland and Barratt. I have no idea if there's anything in it.

eskimolaura · 19/01/2015 21:52

(For the first link, you need to scroll down to the 'herbs' section, but all of it is useful IMO) x x

Pollypoppins · 19/01/2015 21:52

I really want to go cold turkey and my body to get going on its own. I did buy some soy but wimped out of trying it.

Ginfizz90 · 19/01/2015 22:01

I googled lots of natural remedies such has parsley tea, pineapple juice or Papaya juice. Also tablespoon of honey in hot water. I have heard lots about Angus castus too but I'm worried about trying that.
