5 months off pill, still no period

Hi ladies, I came off the pill (Yasmin) over 5 months ago now and have had no period. Twice in this 5 month window I have had very, very light spotting that has happened for 3 days each time (but it really was super light). I have had bloods taken that came up "normal" but what the hell does that mean given depending in when in a cycle they were looking for a normal result would alter accordingly depending on where in the cycle you were!

I have a GP appointment in 2 weeks (which is 6 months no period) and would love some help with what question I should be asking in terms of next steps.

Also, have any of you had to wait this long for your first period?

I am 32, TTC#1, was on Yasmin for 8 years and another pill for 5 years before that.

Thanks.

I didn't get a copy of my results -just saw what they said at my appointment. I think normal just means the hormones are within an expected range - I didn't have the 21 day test as I wouldn't know where I am in my cycle. Think that one is only relevant if you've had a bleed. The 'mid cycle' thing just meant I hadn't had the peak of hormones that make you ovulate I think.

I was told up to 3 weeks to get a referral letter for the ultrasound. It's been nearly 2 now so hoping I get something next week so I can book something.

I haven't even had any cramps/feelings recently so wonder if my system has gone back to sleep! Hmm

Moomin37 · 19/03/2015 15:55

Hello my GP said my blood tests were normal but the consultant I paid to see privately said my FSH was abnormal. I them paid £35 for the AMH and to everyone's surprise that was fine. Therefore I would recommend asking your GP surgery to print the blood test results and take them to your scan appointment. I paid to go privately as it is an 18 week wait where I live. Hope this helps and good luck everyone :) Just checked and CD253 today... glad I didn't know it was going to be this difficult Sad

Ginfizz90 · 19/03/2015 20:00

Moomin, I got a copy of my results like you said. Although finding it difficult to interpret.

LH was 6.4
FSH 5.0

Not entirely sure what that means? I had a call from the ultrasound people today and have to contact them tomorrow to arrange appointment.

bucketfullofwater · 19/03/2015 20:52

Had my ultrasound done today, wasn't bad at all, apart from the crazy amount I had to drink (I've spent the rest of the day dashing to the toilet)

The sonographer said she could see cysts on my ovaries so PCOS is looking very likely (tbh I expected that) Got to go back to the docs in just over a week to see where we go from here.

Hope your appointments were ok eskimo and joey

Hey ladies, so on CD51 my 2nd period came (1st one was on CD145 or something so a massive improvement!). FX I'm on my way back to normality...

Ginnfizz - I was referred by the GP 8 days ago, letter came today, app't is 30 Apr but I think it all totally depends on where you are. I asked my GP if I shd still go if my AF came and she said yes actually as 2 periods in 7 months is still a bit off. I'll need to move this appt but hopefully can get something early May.

To whoever asked about BBT, I don't monitor it because I'm a terrible sleeper - I don't think I'd ever build up a set of accurate readings because I wake up so much. I do however have the advanced clear blue fertility monitor which has been gathering dust on my shelf for 7 months now... Interested to see how I get on with it.

Really hope to hear some good news from you all soon x

Yay joey! All sounding pretty good then.

Bucket, least you have an answer now and your dr will give you some medication to treat it.

Never knew how stressful coming off the pill would be. Shock

eskimolaura · 19/03/2015 21:36

Yay for AF Joey

So... I had my first consultation. I am soooo tired today and my mind has been a bit blown with all of the stuff that the lady said. Confused

I have a list of things that I need to do (she wrote it down for me!)

  1. I have to take a HPT (just in case). It will be BFN, but I'll do it anyway.
  1. I have to call my GP to get a blood test for Rubella immunity. I don't think that this is particularly for the lack of AF; I think she said it was routine for people that are TTC. Confused
  1. DH has to go to the GP for a sperm test. (Again, this is for the TTC thing)
  1. She wrote this as number 4: 'Wait and see and continue TTC'

If it gets to 3 months and there is no AF, they will give me Norethisterone again to induce a bleed and do the Day 21 and Day 28 blood tests to see if I am ovulating.

In the meantime, she is going to arrange a Hysterosalpingogram to check my fallopian tubes and an ultrasound to check my ovaries.

Ok, my question is this: Surely I can't keep TTC, as, when I do have the Hysterowhatjamacallit, it will flush out anything that might have implanted? I only thought about this when I got home... I asked one of my friends, who had IVF recently and so has had the Hysterflushyourtubesoutogram and she said that they only do it after a period, or, for women who have irregular periods or do not ovulate, they need to use contraception for 6 weeks beforehand.

Surely I have been given the wrong advice then, and shouldn't be TTC at all if I am waiting for this hystericalsquirtsomeliquidupmyfluteogram? Confused

Anyone?!

Moomin37 · 20/03/2015 07:02

Hello Ginnfizz I'm no expert but I think the lower the FSH the better and that the ratio of the two (FSH:LH) should be about 1:1, so all in all your results look good to me.

Eskimo you did make me laugh! Still got ages until my rummageaboutandflushyououtagram Grin

eskimolaura · 20/03/2015 18:07

Grin I think I'll just take each day as it comes and see what happens. Will make a decision when I get a letter through.

Glad I made you :) Moomin x x

Ginfizz90 · 23/03/2015 20:06

Hi ladies,

They rang me today to book scan, they had a cancellation so my appointment is this Wednesday. Feeling nervousConfused

Msr12 · 23/03/2015 20:43

Hope it goes ok!! You'll have to let me know what they do.

Still waiting for my referral ??

Pollypoppins · 23/03/2015 21:36

Good luck with your scan Ginfizz. I'm intrigued to find out how you get on, hoping my doc will refer me for a scan when I go back at 6 months with no af. Keep us posted! And good luck!

Ginfizz90 · 23/03/2015 21:37

Msr12 hopefully they will contact you this week! It says on my appointment that it is a transabdominal scan, I was expecting a transvaginal scan for some reason. I'm wondering if they will tell me anything there.

eskimolaura · 23/03/2015 22:04

Oh- just saw your update Ginfizz. Best of luck for the scan on Wednesday. Keep us all updated! How long in terms of weeks has it been from GP to scan? Am I right in thinking that you didn't see a consultant in between? It was just a GP referral?

Ginfizz90 · 24/03/2015 07:44

I went back to the dr last Monday and she referred me then. I had blood tests the same day but came back normal. Then Friday afternoon I had a call from the ultrasound place however I was working so couldn't call them back until yesterday and they managed to get me an appointment tomorrow morning. So it was all really quick, I haven't seen anybody other than my gp so far. I guess it depends on what shows on my scan tomorrow to who I see next!

Msr12 · 25/03/2015 09:38

Good luck today ginfizz!

Ginfizz90 · 25/03/2015 10:04

Thankyou!! Feeling nervous. Will let you know xx

Springisontheway · 25/03/2015 10:09

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread.

OP, this happened to me exactly. I bought some Agnus Castus drops at Holland and Barrett. I took some drops in a bit of water for a couple of days. In a few days I broke out in spots. About 2.5 weeks later I finally had a period. 2 months later I was pregnant.

I realise that it may have all been coincidence, but for less than a fiver, certainly worth a try.

Ginfizz90 · 25/03/2015 11:54

Hi everyone just had the scan and she confirmed there are cysts on both of my ovaries. I thought that might be the case but still had a good cry about it. Feeling so upset!

Pollypoppins · 25/03/2015 14:18

:( So sorry to hear that Ginfizz. But at least you know the cause of no af now, that has to be a positive for you? Did they give you any advice on what the next steps might be for you now? X

Ginfizz90 · 25/03/2015 14:31

I think I'm just in a bit of a state because she showed me on the screen and told me what they were and then said make an appointment with my dr. So I have been told without any kind of explanation. I feel sick with worry at the mo and I know its common I think my minds just in overdrive. I don't even know if cysts on ovaries mean I have pcos? Or can you have cysts without the syndrome? I have no idea at this stage what happens next. My bloods came bk normal??

Pollypoppins · 25/03/2015 14:48

Bless you, I'm expecting to be told the same if/when I eventually get referred to be scanned. Get to your docs ASAP and be pushy until you get what you need. Hope you feel better soon x

eskimolaura · 25/03/2015 18:34

Oh Ginfizz I'm so sorry it wasn't better news. Now let's think about the 'positives' of this situation (I know that's not the right word; please forgive me)

  1. You have some kind of diagnosis and explanation for no AF. That will put an end to this horrible limbo that you have been in for the last few months.
  1. Now that they have an inkling of what is going on, they can decide the best course of action for you.
  1. I have a very limited knowledge / experience of cysts on ovaries, but my SIL has cysts and she doesn't have PCOS. So you may be worrying unnecessarily.
  1. Again, I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that even with PCOS, you can conceive naturally. And if not, there is medication out there that can balance everything out and ensure that you ovulate regularly.

Please try not to worry until you've had a talk with your GP. Cysts are really common and they will know exactly what to do to help you. Have you managed to make an appointment yet? Until then, take it easy, be kind to yourself, eat cake and remember that we are hear if you need to vent. Flowers Flowers

eskimolaura · 25/03/2015 18:36

ack... here (sorry)

AttilaTheMeerkat · 25/03/2015 18:54

Sorry to read that Ginfizz. Think you were let down somewhat by the sonographer. You really need now to see a consultant gynae rather than the GP as such problems are really outside a GPs remit.

Multiple cystic follicles are commonly seen in PCOS patients and this is not unusual. Did this person comment on the ovaries having "a ring of pearls" appearance to them?. Also the polycystic ovary can appear larger than normal (walnut)size; again normal with PCOS.

Some PCOS patients do manage to conceive without help but I will be honest with you and tell you that some do need some medical help in order to conceive. This treatment is not always invasive but it can be very trying and if PCOS is confirmed no one treatment will completely eradicate it.

What blood hormone levels were tested and on which cycle days?.
