Sorry to hear about your test, Kay. AF arrived here on Saturday so I'm not pg this month either . Now very confused about why I've been dizzy for two weeks!

smellymelly · 19/04/2004 09:56

schmozer, and kay1

I know what you mean though, I was convinced I was pregnant last month.

Now on cd22 and very spotty, irritable and emotional. But actually not a great month for me to fall, so that probably means I will be....Not that I'm complaining!!!

MoseGirl · 19/04/2004 09:58

Kay1 my fingers are crossed for you too, it may just be too early for a +

Futurity I am sorry to sound completely dim but I am not sure what OV on CD20 means. I suppose its because this is late in your cycle???? Good luck with your doc, hope they are more helpful than mine who didn't want to know until I have being trying AT LEAST 12 months.

If what I read is correct??? I am to cound back 14 days from last day of cycle (complete novice sorry).
If my LMP is 10th April and I have a 35 day cycle when should I first use OPK's? If the test was to say I was Ov'ing would I BD that day and then every other?

futurity · 19/04/2004 11:44

MoseGirl: Basically if I OV around CD20 and then my AF turns up 9 days later (as it has done the last two cycles) then my body hasn't had enough time to get pregnant..I think you need a minimum of 10 days between OV and AF to allow any fertilised egg to implant.

With your first baby doctors don't tend to want to know unless you have been trying a year but I believe with a second it is less time due to the fact that you have had a baby before so they know you are capable of it! Also I think like me if you got pregnant "easily" first time round but your cycle is now strange they will look into it rather than waiting until you have been trying a year. Well I hope so anyway..will let you know what the doctor says later!!

On the OPK it tells you when to start using them based on your average cycle but I would imagine it would be about 16 days before you are due on working on the theory that you OV 14 days before. HOWEVER..I am a good example of that not really being true as I OV 9 days before AF! Sorry..not much help!

MoseGirl · 19/04/2004 11:51

Thanks Futurity that has helped me understand things more clearly. I guess the ultimate thing for me to establish is that I am Ov'ing and when!

I am off to Boots this week for OPK's.

Tex111 · 19/04/2004 15:45

Kay1 and Schmozer, sorry to hear about those negatives

Mosegirl, I agree with futurity about counting back 16 days. The idea is that you start testing before you Ov. The OPKs detect an LH surge which usually comes something like 12 hours before you Ov. I'm sure the directions in the pack will explain it all much better than I can!

One thing about the OPKs is that they are expensive and addictive. We did a temp chart last time which was not as faffy as it sounds and I'm sure we'll do it again this time if we don't get pregnant soon. Very much recommend it. I learned a lot about my cycles that way.

MoseGirl · 19/04/2004 16:01

Hi Tex111

I have heard about temping and my DH bought a kit from Boots. It seems quite intense checking it everyday so I am thinking of waiting a few months before starting that.

If the OPK's test the LH surge on say Day 16 does this mean I will OV the next day or that same day?

Sorry I guess I should wait and read the directions...

Tex111 · 19/04/2004 16:12

Hi mosegirl, I think it means you'll ovulate in something like 12-24 hours and then the egg lives for another 24 or so, so you've got 36-48 hours to bonk like bunnies. Need to refresh my knowledge too! Good luck with it. Last time after so many negative pregnancy tests it was a real boost to be able to make a line appear on an OPK!

bluestar · 19/04/2004 16:13

Mosegirl, the OPK should turn positive 24-36 hours before ov, which is why the tests recommend that you should bd the day of the surge and the day after.
I have used OPKs for the last 3 months, always get a surge and bd on these days but still have not got pg so please do not think that an OPK will guarantee pg either, it just helps to know that you are ov'ing. Saying that, a friend did not bd for at least a month before she got a positive OPK, had sex that night only, and got pg so you never know. Good luck

I'm away from Mumsnet for a few days and it all happens! Many congratulations Hana It was about time we had another graduate. Hello and welcome to all the newbies. Unfortunately AF arrived on Saturday for me It was my last chance to have a baby in 2004 and more significantly to get pregnant before the due date of the baby I m/c last October. Amazingly I'm not letting myself get as low as I usually get around this time. Spending time here with my sister's 3 children in addition to DS is going to act as a pretty good contraception (I've no idea how she remains sane!)

futurity · 19/04/2004 16:59

Update: Just been to seen doctor. To cut long story short she basically agrees that it seems to be a short luteal phase problem. Next step is to see how we get on this cycle (currently CD 8 I think) and if no joy then next cycle to have blood tests on day 21 (or my equivilant..7 days after ovulation she said). Also at that time the nurse will do some sort of smear thing (nice!) and my DH will provide sperm sample. Then if they come back with problems more tests on day 5 I think she said to test prolactin? As you can see just trying to write down whilst I remember what she said so if anyone could fill in the details of the tests I would be grateful!!

Feel happier now that I have talked to her and that the process has started. She said that fertility people like you to have been trying a year (especially if you have a child already) but I think because I have been recording my OV etc that it has helped to identify there may be a problem already. She said treatment may involve drugs in the second part of the cycle like progestrone pessaries to encourage the lining not to shead early.

MoseGirl · 19/04/2004 17:13

Well Futurity at least they are doing something, thats a start. It all sounds v complex! It also proves that it makes sense to be recording our cycles/OV etc.

Why is it we spend years trying NOT to get PG and then when we want to....!

Thanks Bluestar and Tex111 for that advice. Its worth giving anything a go

Someone sprinkle some babydust our way...

hana · 19/04/2004 18:22

azure - sorry about AF
you sound pretty upbeat which is great.......lots of luck for a New Year's baby!!

ermentrude · 19/04/2004 19:30

Tested Saturday - BFN...BFwaste of money more like!
Tested WAY too early - only ovulated (I think) around 9 days ago. Now on CD31 - AF due anytime. No symptoms at all. If not pregnant I am going to make an appointment with my GP. Tried for DS for over 20 months and haven't used any contraception now since the summer. Might pretend it is longer though LOL!

Any more test results?
Why is it that we all test way too early!!!

ermentrude · 19/04/2004 19:57

Quick question actually - bit gross but here we go. What is the significance (if any) of having very 'creamy' CM (sorry...)? Not normally like this.

bluestar · 19/04/2004 21:21

Azure sorry af arrived. Sounds like you are keeping busy though! I found I was actually more upset a few weeks leading up to the due date of my mc baby than the actual day itself. I coped and you will too. I sometimes feel that getting past the due date makes me look forward to the future rather than having kept thinking that the due date was soon to be here.

Futurity, glad the dr took your concerns seriously and that you are getting some useful advice, let's hope that you don't need to take things further. I have changed my mind and will try for a January baby. I started temping again today (CD12) - if I do have to go to the dr, it seemed a bit daft to do so many months of charts and then just stop for one cycle, whether I was ttc or not. I actually looked back over my past cycles and although I bd on OPK+ days, I think I actually ov a day or 2 past this (even though my temp is higher and seemingly I have ov'd) and so I think maybe I take longer to ov than 24-36 hours and could be missing the moment. So I am going to go past the OPK+ dates and see what happens this month.

ermentrude, sometimes I think we start to look at every potential sign as that of pg and I have read that more-than-usual cm can be a sign, it can also mean simply that you have ov'd. Give it a few days and see what happens but I hope you get some good news!

Tex111 · 20/04/2004 08:17

Azure, sorry to hear that AF arrived. It's good that you're with family and keeping busy. Hope you have a great time away.

Futurity, great that they're acting so quickly for you. Sounds like you have a good GP. I'm afraid I don't know much about the tests though. I'm sure someone on MN will have all the answers though! Good luck. You'll have some answers soon.

Ermentrude, sorry about the negative but it sounds like you really could've tested too early. I do the same thing. With me it's just impatience. I bought some PG tests yesterday and made sure I got the ones you can use up to three days before AF is due because I know I won't be able to wait! Do you think you'll test again or wait and see if AF arrives?

bluestar, good luck with your new BD plans. Glad to see someone else temps. We haven't started yet this time but I loved it first time around. It made me feel like I was doing something every day to get a step closer to having a baby. Good luck to you!

Kay1 · 20/04/2004 19:42

AF arrived today - so def not pg

futurity · 20/04/2004 20:08

Sorry to hear that Kay1

I am going to start temping tomorrow after buying the BBT thingy today from Boots. Will be interesting to have temps and OPK results (well for this month anyway..can't afford to keep buying OPK!).

ermentrude · 20/04/2004 20:13

CD 32 - think I ovulated on cd20 or 21. So either way...my luteal phase is longer than last most (and over that magical 10 days). Good news whether preg or not! No signs at all of AF. Watch though - it will be here 10 minutes after posting! LoL!

ermentrude · 20/04/2004 20:14

sorry Kay
Will probably be joining you in the cd1 club soon!

bluestar · 20/04/2004 21:10

ermentrude (need a smiley face for good luck!)

Kay1 Sorry to hear your news.

Tex111 · 21/04/2004 10:01

Sorry to hear that Kay1. Good luck this cycle!

Ermentrude, great news about your LP. That is a big step. Fingers crossed AF still doesn't show!

Futurity, good luck with the temping!

Nothing happening here. Just waiting and thinking I have every PG symptom going including the ones you don't get until the third trimester! Could've sworn I felt the baby kick last night. Poor DH. Looks like I'm going to be a lunatic this time around too.

Good luck to everyone!

Morgan · 21/04/2004 13:21

Sorry to hear about AF Kay.

I am still waiting now on day 28 had 23 day cycle last month so have no idea what is going on. I feel very emotional and clumsy - crying at Trisha reunion in the gym on Mon am - but do that with pmt anyway, managed to disguise it as i was sweating a lot at the time as well !! Breasts feel big but not sore and no cramps. Probably deluding myself and AF will arrive soon. Am going to put off testing until at least the w/end - can't face a bfn test.
