Just found out you are pregnant after a previous miscarriage and too nervous to move over the to pregnancy boards? Freaking out about spotting, cramping, symptoms (or lack there of) and nervously awaiting your first scan? Here is a lovely place for lot's of support, hand holding and problem sharing.

Courtesy of owlbooty here are the Ten Commandments of the Freak Out Room.

  1. Thou shalt check thy knickers to the point of insanity until the baby actually arrives.
  2. Thou shalt also check the loo roll post-wipeage (sorry, gross, I know)
  3. Thou shalt bore thy physician and midwife to tears with the mentalling.
  4. And thy husband/boyfriend/family/neighbour's cat.
  5. Thou shalt obsess over the absence of symptoms.
  6. And the presence of symptoms.
  7. And the fluctuation of symptoms.
  8. Thou shalt pee on a vast number of sticks and keep ClearBlue and First Response in business.
  9. The day before any scan extreme mentalling is permitted without recourse to the Haddock.
10. Self-diagnosis with Dr Google is Forbidden.

The Haddock will be applied liberally to all transgressors.

Been awake since 5.20 :-(

Sorry LAF am on phone, on a conference for a coupla days so not got laptop so can't look properly, but....looks like a boy to me if the smaller part is the nub??!

I'll look again and post mine up for analysis too when I get back Smile

shellshock7 · 30/09/2011 07:03

Also LAF are you using upper (curved) or lower (straight) section of spine to judge whether nub is parallel? Confused

LAF77 · 30/09/2011 10:01

Hi biscuits I do remember that scene from Friends. The last photo that she took was the clearest. She bounced the instrument on my stomach because the baby wasn't lying at a good angle to get the proper CRL. Once she did that, the baby moved into that position.

I agree scarlett that the little bit that potentially looks like a willy could be the leg. It seems like it could be too high up to be the nub.

shell I suppose I'm considering the lower part of the body to determine the position of the nub.

I've thought from very early on that I'm having a boy, so I'd like to think that my woman's intuition is right! However, I love the baby so much already, that it doesn't matter if I'm right or not.

In that case LAF I'm team pink :-) Scan is two weeks on Monday so (hopefully) will know for sure then Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 30/09/2011 22:42

Have you nub theory people tried the baking soda test? Something like you wee on it and it fizzes for a boy and doesn't for a girl. Or the other way round (I appreciate that difference might be crucial.....)?

I suspect it doesn't have quite the science background of the nub theory but would be interesting to see how the results compare to the nub theory stuff / scan results / actual output!

digitalgirl · 02/10/2011 10:37

12 weeks today! (in a three day old echo of kat's post)

Does anyone know if GP's have dopplers? Or if they can hear the baby's hb at 12 weeks with a stethoscope? I have an appt tomorrow morning and was hoping for some reassurance. I suppose I could just call my mw.

Moominsummermadness · 02/10/2011 10:54

12 Weeks today too, lol! Kat and Digi, do you feel as though you've got to a major milestone? I thought that I would feel that way, but I think because scan is still 5 days away, I'm still mentalling about that. I've had a lot of spotting and some cramping over the last week, don't know how I'm going to sleep Thursday night!!

Has anyone who's a bit further on caught any nasty tummy bugs this pregnancy? The reason I ask is that poor DD spend all last night throwing up and so I spent the night clearing up after her. She's got a raging temperature. I don't know what's caused it, don't know if it's something she ate (she's had different food at her dad's and grandma's and we were out yesterday and she ate different sandwiches to everyone else), or a bug. I'm just a bit worried as if it's contagious, I'm likely to catch it, and I'm worried about the implications for little bean. I know I sound mega-paranoid, but any advice would be useful!!

scarletfingernail · 02/10/2011 11:24

Hi Moomin poor DD. How old is she? The reason I ask is that I was wondering if she might have an ear or throat infection that caused her to throw up rather than a sickness bug? If she's too little to tell you that her ear or throat is hurting it might be a good idea to get it checked out.

If she's got a raging temperature (above 38) it doesn't sound like a normal sickness bug. DS usually only gets a raging temp when he's got tonsillitis and it can be the high temperature that makes them sick. It might be worth giving your out of hours GP a call and speaking to a nurse. Tell them what her temp is and that you're pregnant and see what they say.

If it is just a sickness bug you will be fine. It's the fever that causes concern so it's best to get to the bottom of what's causing that. If you do end up getting it and also get the fever you will need to do whatever possible to keep your temp down. Loose clothing, cold flannels and paracetamol.

Moominsummermadness · 02/10/2011 11:40

Thanks Scarlet. She's eight, so can normally specify where she's in pain. She's asleep at the moment, so might take her temp again when she wakes up and take it from there. It's a strange one, as you said, usually when they have sickness bugs they don't have such high temperatures. I think calling the out of hours gp might be a good idea.

Biscuitsandtea · 02/10/2011 13:03

Oh no Moomin poor DD - hope she feels better soon and it is nothing contagious. Hope the on call doctor can help too xx

LAF77 · 03/10/2011 09:14

LadyMaybe · 03/10/2011 10:22

Think I may have screwed up the grads dates, +4 is no good for my puny brain.

Moomin and Digi well done for 12 weeks and Googie! you're up to 7! see? the time is passing, you're racking up the days.

Moomin I hope your DD recovers quickly from the bug. My DS had a big temp spike a few weeks ago, went up to 39.7 deg, and he had complained of a sore stomach but hadn't been sick. The temp came down gradually overnight and he was fine the next day. My theory was he was possibly exposed to something that his body had to work very hard to counter - there's a lot of measles going around here for example - DS is immunised but would still have had the signs of an immune response if exposed. Anyway, I hope you don't pick up whatever it is. Lots of handwashing and extra careful food hygiene.

Kat hope you are ok for the scan today and that it's a pleasant experience. Not too long a wait etc.

Ivy/Stick how are you doing? Are the twins giving you extra symptoms to contend with?

I've got what I expect will be a 'booking in' at the High Risk Pregnancy unit at the national women's hospital tomorrow - which is a different clinic to the recurrent pg loss clinic that has been caring for me so far. I think RPL clinic will discharge me if I get to 12 weeks or so, but not sure. God, that reminds me, I was going to post a thread asking about care protocols for clexane users. Kat do you know what your plan will be in terms of growth scans, when you'll come of it etc? I was expecting to come of it at 34 weeks and have regular scans to check growth/placenta function but not sure of exact plan. Feel like I should go to the appt with some expectations...hmmm

Still randomly throwing up some mornings - did this morning after waking up thinking 'oh I feel a lot a better', shower and brushing teeth are the danger times, it's horrible.

I've also just realised that it's our wedding anniversary in a few days - have no clue what to do about it. Big meals don't work for me, and DH is super-stressed with work at the moment. Any ideas? It's no.2 or maybe 3 Blush. Hmmm, no must be 2 because DS was walking at it and he's 3.5.

stitchinline · 03/10/2011 12:09

Lady the stats are hard! I?m on fragmin and I?ll be on until 6 weeks post birth. I have as high risk of DVT and apparently the biggest danger zone for that is 6 weeks post birth. I might have to ask my MW about the growth scans etc at my next appointment but if they don?t offer will probably get a couple of private ones done as no way am I waiting from 22 weeks to arrival to see what is going on.

I?m still randomly throwing up, when in the shower having just lathered the shampoo is the usual stage for me Hmm, avoiding washing my hair these days

Kat sending good wishes for you scan today

Finally seem to have got rid of my bug ? was so hideous glad I took the antibiotics as they do seem to have done the trick. Had a very quiet weekend and am much better for it today, actually functioning at work for a change from the last couple of weeks. Went to a wine tasting night last night, DH loved it as he got double serves. For me not so much fun although I did have a sip of couple that smelt interesting, then had fish and chips ? perfect finish to a summer day.

Bought a dream genii yesterday, def think it helped with the sleeping but silly me was so eager to use it that I didn?t wash the cover first ? now have a hideous rash on my legs. Oh the joys of sensitive skin. It has now been washed.

Waves to everyone else, love seeing all the numbers going up as the weeks go by :o

kat2504 · 03/10/2011 12:39

Thanks for the good wishes! The scan was fine, everything seems to be in order at the moment. I've gained a day but I'm not changing my date as I know my date was right. Next scan 28th November! I can't wait that long!! MiniKit was not interested in getting the NT measurement done at all. Cheeky cow of a sonographer wrote "difficult scan due to maternal tissue and fetal movement". Is she trying to say I is too chubby? I've lost half a stone in the last three weeks!

lady I'm seeing my consultant this afternoon to discuss the management plan, or at least the temporary version of it. The original plan only involved making it out of the first trimester! I have been prescribed clexane until 6 weeks after the birth and I presume that plan will still stand.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/10/2011 12:41

Yay Kat - that is absolutely awesome news!

So pleased for you - are you going to tell people now or have you already?

kat2504 · 03/10/2011 12:43

Family know already, told some at 6 weeks and some others and a few friends at 9 weeks. I think people will just find out bit by bit really. I'm not planning on putting my scan pictures on facebook just now or anything.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/10/2011 12:47

No - I hear that! Have made no mention of it whatsoever on facebook! I think when you've had trouble getting to this stage you are suddenly so much more worried in case someone else is going through something awful. Plus somehow I just didn't feel I wanted all that big fuss. I just have told people in (what I hope is) quite a no frills kind of way.

I think when you're so worried about it yourself you just kind of almost want to play it down?

Anyway, either way I'm delighted for you to have got to 12 weeks and had a good scan too. Just need to keep ticking those weeks off now.

May I ask what the clexane does? How come you have to take it until after the birth? Apologies if that is too nosey - feel free to ignore if so

kat2504 · 03/10/2011 12:51

Clexane is an anticoagulant, it prevents blood clots. People who have had blood clots are often on warfarin, but you can't take that in pregnancy.
I have been diagnosed with lupus anticoagulant, which is a blood clotting disorder. They think it might cause miscarriages by creating blood clots in the placenta, thereby starving the baby of oxygen. So I am on a low preventative dose of clexane to keep the blood flowing nicely to the baby.
After the birth quite a few women are given clexane as there is a higher risk of thrombosis, especially post c-section.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/10/2011 12:55

Ah ok - thank you for explaining that for me. Ad hope it continues to do its job and keep everything moving nicely. I presume you'll have lots of scans etc then to check placenta function etc as the weeks go on?

LAF77 · 03/10/2011 12:57

Yay Kat, great news! So happy for you!

OP posts:
kat2504 · 03/10/2011 13:04

No more scans until 20 weeks apparently and then I think they will do growth scans in the third trimester. I can't wait until 20 weeks. Waiting from 9 to 12 and a half weeks has been torture!

Biscuitsandtea · 03/10/2011 13:08

Yes I know - it's awful isn't it. It is not even 3 weeks since my twelve week scan and it is still over a month until my 20 week one. Wish I had something like a holiday or something to distract me for a few weeks....

shellshock7 · 03/10/2011 13:08

Not done any other gender tests biscuits, I've only got so focussed on the nub theory one as it has been subject to proper testing and was proven to be 80% (I think) effective at my scan date.

Great news kat Smile

Stitch that is on my shopping list too, wake up everytime I move now as bump is sore - so you would recommend so far, once washed of course!

Had a great day yesterday meeting friends new born identical twin boys and a new born baby girl - DH and I were full of it last night on such a high at the thought that this could be us soon. Really can't wait for the next scan now (2 weeks today) and hoping that it is good news Smile

Ive lost a day on the stats - has everyone? If so, we can just change the date to Sunday 2 October instead of going thru and updating everyone!
