Not sure how the stats work. I'm 22

1sttimetryer · 21/06/2011 12:46

Can anyone help me?! Is it normal to have cycles lasting nearly 50 days or do you think there might be a problem?
Thanks

CaveMum · 21/06/2011 13:06

1sttimetryer, "normal" is all relative! What is your situation? Have you just come off a form of contraceptive? Sometimes it rakes a little while for your body to sort itself out and get back into a routine.

Don't automatically assume that a long cycle is due to a problem, but do keep notes on what is happening. In my experience, Drs won't take steps to investigate absent periods until you've been 6 months without one - this is what happened to me.

cavemum thanks for replying, i had heavy and very long and irregular af's so doctor put me on contraceptive pill back 7 years ago, I then had inplant for a couple of years, then back on the pill, i came off of the pill back in march, i had a bleed straight after coming off it, 42 days later had my af, it was then another 48 days til my next af both my af's have been mainly spotting with one day of bleeding (sorry if thats too much info!) i am keeping a diary at the moment to try and find a pattern.

ColleenEatsVeg · 21/06/2011 17:12

Sorry to load you up with questions. So we celebrated the idea of wanting to TTC by TTCing about a week before my af knowing that I am most liking no ov so now my af is about 6 days overdue. I know because of the timing it's unlikely but how long did you wait after you due af to start shelling out money for preg tests. I don't want to get excited but can't help some hopeless daydreaming.

Karstan · 21/06/2011 17:54

ColleenEatsVeg i think most ladies on here struggle to wait more than one day overdue before peeing on a stick Blush

6 days over if you're normally fairly regular i'd say go buy a test!

ColleenEatsVeg · 21/06/2011 18:42

Thanks Karstan I was just always confused on tests, I mean does early mean before your scheduled af or as early as a week after. Thanks for the advice I swear this whole process (the last time we were trying) makes me so thick ;p

Jezzabell · 21/06/2011 19:39

Thanks for the info, about 10 days to wait then. Would love to be pg this month, but I am realistic and this is the first time we have tried, but I can see how it would get frustrating waiting to find out. Oh well, fingers crossed and I suppose I'd better stay off the booze just in case. At least if it doesn't work this month, af is due mid week before we're going camping with friends at the weekend. So if af does come, i can have a drink or two the following weekend! Look for the positives eh!

Hope everyone else on here is enjoying the longest day of the year, it's actually a bit sunny here, but home alone as DH is working stupid late shifts in a crappy job until we can find him something better. Although bless him, he made the effort when he got home at 8.30pm one night last week to have a shower and get a bit of SWI in before his dinner!

Maclj · 21/06/2011 21:34

Hi everyone.
Been trying since nov-10. My brave hubby has delayed ejaculation (tmi?!). He's been referred to a psycho sexual analyst. Not sure what will happen. Here's hoping it helps him. I'm worried we want this so badly that it puts more pressure on him. :-(

weimy · 21/06/2011 22:08

Hi to all newbies and fx!!!

CaveMum · 21/06/2011 22:40

ColleenEatsVeg I think "early" response tests can be used from about 3 or 4 days before AF is due, so that would be from 10 days after ovulation (dpo). However, someone on Mumsnet once posted some stats from early response tests that showed that at such an early stage they are only about 60% accurate, so you can get a false negative and cause yourself upset. You have to remember that your HCG levels (the hormone a pg test looks for) doubles every day so the longer you leave it the more accurate it will be.

ChantingAsISpeak · 21/06/2011 23:30

Argh, I'm having a bit of a late night moment...have I left it all too late?

What started me thinking were the nasty comments made on another thread about it being my own fault for not starting to ttc by my early 30s. I am not early 30s, I'm getting pretty damn close to not even being late 30s :( , not that I feel it or worry about it in a general way.

We've been married for almost 9 years but the time hasn't really been right up to now. DH was made redundant 3 times in that time, so my pay just about kept us going; we both piled on the weight, which we have lost a big chunk of over the past year or so; I worked for an evil bully bitch which almost pushed me over the edge and sent my BP into the 200s, I moved into a lovely job a couple of years ago; we have finally got fairly settled where we live (renting).

So now we are in the right place, but I'm panicking that it is too late. I've read up on the whole ttc thing, especially for the over 35s, which is not too awful. What did hit me a bit was when I found out that if there were issues (obviously I'm hoping there are not and at the moment there are no real indications that there are) I am too old to be eligible for any assistance in our PCT. Bugger...late night google should be banned.

1sttimetryer · 22/06/2011 07:00

Chanting ignore that other thread!! being in your 30's is not too late, thousands of people get pregnant at that age and older.
keeping my fx for you and everyone else on this thread, seeing BFP makes me happy and thinking it will be me soon :)

CaveMum · 22/06/2011 07:05

ChantingAsISpeak you've just found out why one of our motto's is "Step away from the Google!"

Seriously though, yes there are issues for women TTC over the age of 35, but you aren't automatically decrepit! I read an article recently that said there has actually been a big increase on the number of babies born to women in their 40s. It is thought that one of the main reasons for this rise is that these women stopped using contraception because they thought they could no longer get pregnant.

If it is any comfort I work with two ladies who both had their first child in their late-30s.

Morning everyone!

Sorry I've been awol, it's been a very very busy few weeks. First of DH and I had a week off work together and we blkitzed the entire garden so now it's habitable and we both love it Grin then back to work and have ha d a bit of a to-do with the boss lady and was basically told by the team manager just to get on with it Angry and now I'm also in counselling, which is going well! Phew, that was a quick update Grin ERTD due this weekend on my 12th cycle so if nothing we're off to the docs for testing Sad

Fingerscrossed massive massive congrats! SmileSmile

Welcome to all the newbies

Cloclo15 · 22/06/2011 09:18

Chanting, the idea that your age will be the problem is rubbish. I started trying at 28 and have encountered some problems with my hormone levels. A friend who started trying at 25 had to have IUI after 2 years. Whereas two of my other friends in their 30s fell pregnant by accident! So I don't think age has so much to do with it.

Fingerscrossed1 · 22/06/2011 09:48

I just thought I'd pop my head in to say hi...I miss it here where I 'knew' everyone!

Chanting I just read your post and just wanted to say IGNORE that other thread. What people have said to you is total rubbish...our neighbour fell pregnant accidentally when she was 47, there are no hard and fast rules in this game.

I've been reading a lot of threads at the moment where there seems to be people putting accross their point of view in a very insensitive and sometimes nasty way and it it bothers me. Puts me off posting actually in places other than such as here where I know people are kind Smile

Rant over. Thanks for the congrat Josie, hang in there with work and everything else, you'll get there.

Congrats to late as well if you're still around somewhere and to any other BFPs we may of had as I'm not up to speed.

Readynow · 22/06/2011 10:13

Please can I join? I am 34 & have been ttc since we got married in December. As the first few months were just 'practicing' as it were I don't think we dtd at the right time so I am counting this as the start of our 5th cycle! FX for some more BFP soon.

weimy · 22/06/2011 14:46

Hi all!

Cd 9 here usually ov about 15 so am starting to swi. Got reflexology on Sat. I think this might be my last go at trying tbh.xxx

ColleenEatsVeg · 22/06/2011 14:51

Thanks CaveMum will pick up a test, just feel a bit silly because alot of our practicing was only a week before my af was due. I have a terrible cycle from 28-38, now on 45 which is weird even for me

ChantingAsISpeak · 22/06/2011 18:09

Thanks so much for your comments, they really mean a lot - I know, Google is evil! I really should have gone to bed earlier, but DH is away and I find it hard to sleep when he is not here. Sod age! I don't feel that old, and I don't think I look that old. I cheered myself up a bit when I realised that one of my uncles was born when my grandma was 39 - so it is all to play for.

Never mind, I have slapped myself a few times and given myself a stern talking to. Back to being chipper again - and DH is back tomorrow so I will pounce on him! Poor bloke won't know what's hit him.

Good luck to everyone.

JosieSmith1 · 22/06/2011 19:25

Glad you feel better Chanting people seem to want to make you feel bad sometimes for no real reason.

Yesterday the pg lady at work said she wanted to accompany one of the probation officers on a home visit if she was allowed, so I piped up saying I'd been on one, and the probation officer in question responded with 'yes but you're not pg'. Ouch Sad She doesn't know what's going on though so can't really be angry at her

LateToTheTTCParty · 22/06/2011 20:08

Awww Chanting, just read your post Sad please please please don't get stressed about the whole age thing. My DH & I have been married for 9.5 years and for various reasons we were only able to start ttc in January after I had turned 37. I had been seeing a gynae for a year before that & I had a real stress at her about my age, she just waved it away as something not to be worried about. If absolutely nothing has happened after 6 months then they'll see you earlier than a younger person, but don't think that you are destined to have problems ttc - look at me, updiffed on my 6th cycle!
(big geriatric hug Wink)

ChantingAsISpeak · 22/06/2011 20:23

Thanks for all your lovely comments Cavemum, Firsttimetryer, Late, Josie, Fingersand Cloclo - it really does make me feel better :) Am rather Blush for having a bit of a meltdown - really not like me at all.
It is hard not to think 'what if' but that is barking mad pointless - it would not have been a positive time earlier. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had been pg at my last job. So now is the right time for me.
Late, that is really good to hear about the gynae - there seems to be so much negative stuff about, mostly anecdotal or based on old research - makes a nice change.

TomboyWife · 22/06/2011 20:40

Chanting I'm 36 and no health professional has said anything to me about age. And even if they had, what am I supposed to do about it? We are where we are.

And the really funny thing is: think what people would say if they thought we were TTC too young! We can't win with some people. Younger than 28 and we're teenage statistics, older than 34 and we're shrivelled-up old hags.
