The toy was cute, but then it seemed to me she couldn't find them a gift in John Lewis either so they really got nothing to take home?

Janie143 · Today 13:55

I'm with PP. Terrible advert, spoiled kids and no ineffective parents. The song is ironic too

Imarriedagrinch · Today 13:55

AAhh - but too early 🙄

I’d rather a more traditional Nan making some mince pies with the grand children with they buy her a naice top out of JL ? Too boring I suppose. The Waitrose ones are better than the Jl ones sometimes this time of the year. I haven’t seen a ad yet though ! ( have to look out for it)

Yes, the agency who does those is much better- the Joe Wilkinson/ Kiera Knightley one last year was my favourite ad of the year. Grin

Bloody hell... what a feel-bad advert... It's like they asked AI 'what does Christmas mean to you?' and it scraped all the replies saying 'It's just consumerism now, over-indulged kids who behave badly and get spoiled anyway by family trying to buy their love...'.

Spot on!

I've just realised that Joe (as Uncle Phil) was in the Waitrose advert the previous year- the whodunnit with the missing dessert. I'm hoping it is a 'running series' type thing. It makes for a much more 'Christmassy' feel.

moderate · Today 14:19

I'm actually genuinely impressed with this year's John Lewis Christmas advert.

It's managed to make the ones for the previous few years seem much better in comparison. Quite a feat.

VickyEadie · Today 14:21

sueelleker · Today 08:32

And what does "lets go on a montage" mean?

I think it's a 'breaking the fourth wall' thing - referring openly to the fact it's an ad and not reality.

What? First desk has got grand children?

Waiting for the version of Jackson Lambs grandkids, getting a bottle of whisky and 20 B&H each.

😂😂😂
can you imagine him as a reluctant Father Christmas

Who is the target audience for the JL advert. As a parent I’d be mortified. As a grandparent I’d be out of there, or rather, they would be. I can’t think of anything less likely to make me want to spend £ than bratty kids and their useless parents.

These are my thoughts. I don’t get it.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · Today 14:43

KST looks so glamourous.

Grandma should have bought the kids some manners, do they sell them in John Lewis?

Janiie · Today 14:43

It's like something from a piss taking clip you'd see on Twitter.

Awful rude, greedy kids, useless parent, forced rictus grins from Granny.

Sack the marketing team! Bring back the dragon or the bear.

They switched agencies after lockdown

insider here.
*JL was in a mess in various ways, hence why they needed to move agency. Surprisingly, the iconic tear jerkers we all knew and love didn't convert into sales for JL, it just made everyone excited for christmas and they shopped elsewhere! Since moving, JL's probability is on the up and they're out of the red.

*they want to be more 'modern' that means reflecting real audience challenges; this year it was people want to give but don't know where to start, so resort to cash and vouchers, this is esp., true of grandparents, thus giving a credible role of JL's expertise and range to assist. Last year it was the role of gift giving to connect, told through father/son dynamics.

I can see where you're all coming from but some handy context.

GalaDinner · Today 14:57

I like it, but that's because KST looks and sounds just like my friend (except my friend is posher!😂).

This strikes me as a branding problem rather than a content problem. Surely everyone could just as easily shop elsewhere for their father's favourite dance floor anthems or their christmas cave decorations?

That’s all well and good but granny didn’t buy gifts as such. It looks like she hit the haberdashery department (long mourned by me!) rather than the gift aisle. She gave an experience.

Any reletives of Jackson Lamb would be feral !

MyballsareSandy2015 · Today 06:28

I’d be embarrassed if those kids were mine … too big to be charging about bored, they aren’t toddlers. And then holding the card up, looking for money 😳

i thought the same
Gloria should have said 'right kids with that attitude you get nothing'
pickles was the star

ClawedButler · Today 15:19

Ask me, those kids should've got coal for Christmas.

And maybe a couple of spines for their parents.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · Today 15:21

I think Roddy Ho and Shirley would have added more to the ad than Jackson Lamb, tbh.

Tryandmakeadifference · Today 15:23

KST is beautiful & she played the role brilliantly. The scenes were spectacular although sadly this advert sent out the wrong messages & not what Christmas should be about for children or adults.

ednaclouda · Today 15:24

WiseLemonExpert · Today 10:21

The Tesco one is brilliant this year, in my opinion....

the tesco one has just made me cry
so gorgeous.

the80sweregreat · Today 15:30

Roddy Ho would have told the grandkids to do one!
Anyone confused a bit by the Tesco one? I have the impression they are estranged friends or relatives.
The surly man is funny , but it hasn’t gone down well in some quarters ( maybe because it’s meant to be farmer?)
Although a big chain taking the mickey out of farmers is close to the truth I suppose going by their margins.
