Actually, I think the time has come where one of the supermarkets should just put up a blank screen, perhaps a Christmassy red, and just show the following words:

"Instead of spending £x million on making an advert, we've decided to give that money to the following charities: (insert 10 excellent charity names).

Merry Christmas from Supermarket"

They'd get my custom.

Or even better, replay a mixture of the good ones with cute animals/kids that make you cry and at the end say the money they've saved not making a new advert is going to charity.

Win win.

Then have a voting system so we can all vote our favourite to be shown on Christmas Eve 🎄

EasternStandard · Today 11:42

Goodness that is trite and bad. Annoying, ungrateful kids and a fantastic looking woman told ‘come on grandma’.

I think JL / Waitrose did that during the pandemic

Tulipsriver · Today 11:42

I quite like it but those kids are being little shits 😅

I agree, bring back the tear-inducing cute animals from years gone by.

About the shaking-the-cards-for-money-thing, though, I read it not as the kids looking for cash they wanted because they were bratty, but expecting cash because previous years Grandma has given them that/shown that she doesn't put thought into presents? They didn't expect anything else/were confused there wasn't cash in the card like usual?

It wasn't well executed to be honest. Parents characters completely missed the mark, which in turn made the children look like brats, when I think they were supposed to be wanting attention that Grandma couldn't give until John Lewis helped her see the light!

And I dont know why the daughter was surprised her children were bored. She presumably grew up in that house/with her mother who didnt know how to relate to kids, so surely she should have expected this was how the visit would go.

Ah, I think you've got it! That's why she has created an experience together rather than just giving them some toys

tinyspiny · Today 11:59

The dog was the only good thing in that tripe .

5128gap · Today 12:04

Would have been better to show a montage of heartwarming scenes of happy kids receiving grandma gifts over the years, then the dilemma solved by JL being the (now adult) kids finding something for grandma. Or am I projecting...?😂

ilovebrie8 · Today 12:04

It's awful !

Years gone by the journey was my all time favourite, the bear and the hare, man on the moon were all brilliant.

This is poor.

Madamefroufrou · Today 12:09

MorningYawning · Today 11:12

OMG John Lewis is promoting those rickshaws? Have they not read the room or at least the news - they’re scammers targeting single women!

are they even allowed on Oxford Street now ??

Bigteamug · Today 12:10

Horrible!!!! Poor Grandma should have spent her money on a holiday in the sun instead!

Absolute brats

KrampusWasRight · Today 12:16

Dreadful parenting from both generations.

Those kids should have been bought some wellies and chucked outside in the rain and only allowed back in when they could behave, just like we were. Jumping on the sofas? Really? “They just need something to do.” FO. I take it they had a long car journey, stuffed full of sugar and then unleashed. Would you do that to a dog? No. You’d walk the dog, give it wholesome nutritious food and then tell it to shut up or lock it in the kitchen when it was whining.

And that’s how you treat children at Christmas.

KilkennyCats · Today 12:17

Nothing particularly heartwarming about that - pair of brats!

garlicandgherkins · Today 12:23

awful. rude, badly behaved children and the moral of the story being a child's affection can be bought.

garlicandgherkins · Today 12:26

fishingtime · Today 06:09

And it’s lovely - I think anyway.

https://www.johnlewis.com/content/christmas-advert

please tell me exactly what you think is lovely about it.

Iwantanothergo · Today 12:30

Just watched it and I think it’s awful.

The parents would know there was nothing for the children to do in the house, and should have brought toys with them.

The children come across as ungrateful brats.

A grandmother would know what sort of toys children of different ages like. Pull-along toys like that dog are for toddlers. And dancing in the decorated, sparkly room would keep them occupied for twenty minutes max. It’s just silly. Very disappointing.

Lifeomars · Today 12:35

It's the 3rd November, yes, I fully understand that people need to plan and budget for the (endless) festive season but this ridiculous "premiering" of what are after all just bloody ads designed to encourage spending makes me cringe. Why does Christmas have to build up and then drag on for nearly 8 weeks these days, yes, you can all pile on and call me mean, a Grinch and a Scrooge but I am one of the many who finds it very emotionally challeging due to multiple bereavements and have to go out of my way to avoid all the what will now be daily reminders that it is coming.

HugADiamond · Today 12:36

Instead of wasting all that money on making that silly advert just showcase what gifts they have in store , offers etc and give the staff a bigger Christmas bonus .

Smokeywater · Today 12:37

A grandma who looked and dressed like that would have the gumption to know that time has moved on and children unless they are 2 don't want pull along toys - how ridiculous - and who would buy all that trashy fabric and drape it round the room - insane
Horrible kids, unbelievably out of touch grandma, DD who seems to have totally not inherited an iota of fashion knowledge from her DM despite DCs being expensively togged up, - buy a load of crap to dump unenvironmentally after Xmas - great Xmas message - hmmmm...... there must be more faults - I could do so much better as could most people

fairiesinthegarden1 · Today 12:39

It makes for uncomfortable viewing and the first 9/10 of it is really tedious. The point seems to be about disconnected families and one part of the family trying harder than another. It’s a very interesting issue. Shows the ‘issue’ from the grandparents’ pov with the kids and parents in a bad light. A ‘sweeter’ take on this would have been, eg grandma scouring the shops to look for toys whilst on the phone to daughter who says ‘mum they have everything. They just want a fun time with you, don’t stress’. Grandma then concocts a really fun day involving eg learning to do the latest craze dance, learning to play Mario kart and setting up the living into a disco. Kids arrive and it nearly all goes wrong (they’re squabbling and nearly miss it), somehow their attention is turned to the room and they all bond and have the best time with grandma.

I’m sure they must have considered this sort of telling of the story, but they wanted THIS version. Are they promoting a debate on the ‘ungrateful’ grandkids and kids? Wanting to align themselves with the maligned boomers (who after all have the spending power for JL…) Would love to have been a fly on the wall in the boardroom!

Ohcrap082024 · Today 12:40

I love a JL Christmas advert. But this is awful.

The messaging is terrible. Bored, ungrateful children causing havoc. Granny throws money at the problem to buy their affection. The exact opposite of what Christmas is meant to be about.

Dreadful waste of KST.

How on earth did this concept and final edit get past the top execs at JL? Surely someone with a bit of common sense should have said something during the whole process.

VickyEadie · Today 12:41

trossardmartinelli · Today 06:23

It's dull and didn't make me emotional at all.

Yes - it left me absolutely cold!

the80sweregreat · Today 12:47

Makes you wonder who dreams up these things!
I even prefer the one with the sisters to this and that wasn’t great.

Shodan · Today 12:47

The message is 'Reward bratty behaviour and poor parenting with even more expensive tat'.

As for the rickshaw rubbish- no words.

And the accompanying son is terrible.

In fact, I'd be more inclined to believe that this isn't the JL Christmas ad, it's just a random ad designed to fuel publicity for the real advert which is yet to come.

Pingsung · Today 12:52

What is clear from this is that a group of mumsnetters would have come up with a much better ad! So many good ideas.
