Agree its is done by kids who just left uni and are very woke and do not understand real life

I really don't like this advert at all, but I have seen a few people describe it as woke and I'm genuinely not sure what's woke about it?!

Tryandmakeadifference · Today 15:36

It kind of makes me relieved that I don't have grandchildren, if that's how it is.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. Mine are my world at this stage of life despite still working. I agree the way the children have been portrayed though would put anyone off the idea of having them. I don't know what JL were thinking.

the tesco one has just made me cry
so gorgeous.

Just went to find the tesco one after seeing your post.

Yep a lovely feel good christmassy tear jerker.

*although I did have a flicker of worry that she'd get in trouble for driving her tesco van after work so i needed to suspend reality a bit 😂

AlohaRose · Today 15:42

i've just watched it and thought it was awful. Those children are dreadful, the parents are ineffectual and I have no idea what the ad is supposed to portray - that John Lewis sells Christmas decorations - is that the message?!

Maomee · Today 15:42

What strikes me most of the lack of creativity. Usually these ads are known to be quite whimsical aren't they? Just showed a very blah family with very ignorant little children, if anything it's made me feel less Christmassy!

fedupandtired1 · Today 15:45

A big no, even my 9 year old said what ungrateful brats. Sorry Jl you’ve got it very wrong

KrampusWasRight · Today 15:49

I can see where you're all coming from but

But indeed.

First rule of marketing - Be easy to buy from.

JL has closed two stores close to me so I have to trek into godforesakencity to buy face to face, which I cba to do.

The way forward @JRsEyebrows - and you can have this advert pitch for free - is to cross market with Waitrose. 1) Order your lovely JL pyjamas and Christmas gifts online 2) collect from Waitrose oh, you only came to pick up your order and as you’re waiting for the customer service people to locate it, somehow you fill up your trolley with marvellous Festive Food, spend £1,000 and it won’t fit in the car so you have to strap it to the roof ha ha what japes 3) final shot of everyone sitting around bedecked in JL PJs playing games eating exclusive Waitrose cake and picky bits. Sorry, smorgasbord.

Get in first before M&S (you two are the only retailers who offer clothing, homeware and a full grocery shop) and £££.

I really like it. The message is for the older generation not to give up on finding a way to connect with the young. My MiL has for the past few years given me some cash to buy something. It’s kind of her to give anything but I think she has given up a bit. And for all those who require very specific gifts from their lists, as if it’s a mail order catalogue, they have given up too. I love the idea of trying to be creative and connect through giving. I also love all the beautifully curated images in the advertisement.

Next year they should do a MiL and DiL one!

I like it, but that's because KST looks and sounds just like my friend (except my friend is posher!😂).

Is it actually possible to be posher than KST ?

It's a way of saying there are black/mixed race people in it without it sounding a teeny bit racist...

krustykittens · Today 15:58

I don't like it. Horrible kids, useless parents and a grandmother trying to buy her grandkids love. My granny gave bloody awful Christmas presents, it was a bit of a family joke, I adored her anyway. There is nothing wrong with the message, that there is joy in giving and even more joy when you realise you have got it right but it was portrayed in the wrong way.

KilkennyCats · Today 16:15

JRsEyebrows · Today 14:51

insider here.
*JL was in a mess in various ways, hence why they needed to move agency. Surprisingly, the iconic tear jerkers we all knew and love didn't convert into sales for JL, it just made everyone excited for christmas and they shopped elsewhere! Since moving, JL's probability is on the up and they're out of the red.

*they want to be more 'modern' that means reflecting real audience challenges; this year it was people want to give but don't know where to start, so resort to cash and vouchers, this is esp., true of grandparents, thus giving a credible role of JL's expertise and range to assist. Last year it was the role of gift giving to connect, told through father/son dynamics.

I can see where you're all coming from but some handy context.

Surely the fact that you “can see where people are coming from” but feel you have to explain the context (as if we’re all a bit simple) tells you it hasn’t worked? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I lie. Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda - how can I forget George!

But can you order online and collect from these ⬆️?

MrsMitford3 · Today 16:55

I just saw on twitter that they have turned the comments off on youtube and it had 5 times the dislike v like.

honestly what were they thinking and how many ppl/who on earth saw this along the way and approved it???

Mistachio · Today 16:58

It’s awful.

They’ll never beat Monty The Penguin.

Magnificentbeast · Today 16:59

Thumbs up to the toy dog, beautiful house and the lovely KST. The kids' behaviour was awful and the parents' reactions to the kids was just as bad!
The dog made me feel nostalgic for the one I had as a kid, but the overall message seems to be that entitled behaviour is rewarded.

Most importantly though it didn't really sell John Lewis to me.

the80sweregreat · Today 17:02

Why do they like a ‘refrigerator ‘ mum or Nan , when it’s mostly the men who don’t take a lot of notice of Christmas the children or the present buying. A grandad I may have bought into, but it’s still a pretty rubbish ad and probably cost a lot of money.

EarringsandLipstick · Today 17:03

It's dreadful. Agree with all the posts re: horrible kids, ineffectual parents but from an ad perspective it's really unclear what JL actually provided - we only see a locked room at the end that is transformed into some kind of paradise but no idea what the amazing presents she procured were that so delighted the entitled children. It's the weirdest thing ever.

KST looks absolutely beautiful, however. Love her.

Smokeywater · Today 17:12

I just realised it is completely religion free - pink sparkly disco room - no stars, santa, angels, anything - miserable gits

Surely DGPs are doing more childminding etc for busy parents than ever before - just because DMIL is distant I certainly am not.

the80sweregreat · Today 17:16

Can’t put too much Christmas into a Christmas ad eh!
Most people would like a spare room to ‘ do up ‘ ( I’d love a disco room, I saw a house for sale once for 10 million not too far from me and that had it’s own disco floor with the big glitter ball !)
I’d rather that than a hot tub any day of the week.

Sloth2026 · Today 17:16

I didn’t enjoy the ad either. My favourite one in the past was the boxer dog one. I feel like Christmas has started even earlier this year but it has maybe always been like this and l didn't notice before

SaraHoliday · Today 17:18

It's successful in that it's got people talking about it.....but for the wrong reasons.

👎 Lackluster advert from John Lewis this year!

It neither appeals to an adult or a child. 🤷

Christmas starts before the children go back after the six weeks off. The tubs of rubbish chocolates appear first and the long life food and by now it’s full on.
It was always after bonfire night years ago that you would see things in the shops and my parents moaned it was too soon then.

Monty36 · Today 17:23

I think it is a clever advert. Whoever drafted this looks at Mumsnet.
It is an exercise in how it looks when adults and children have no manners. That grandparents can be hurt. That Grandparents might not get things right, but many will be trying to.
Hopefully, it might show parents how it might look and sound if you don’t yourself don’t say anything nice but are critical only. Your children might follow suit. And it is not a good look.
It reminds us all not to value things by money. Including children who expect.

But also prompts people to go and shop at John Lewis. Trying to highlight that actually other stores are often more expensive.
Clever advert. At first I didn’t like it. I have changed my mind !
