The song, "you can't always get what you want" is an elegy to longing, addiction and lost dreams. How Chrismassy is that? nice little earner for Jagger and Richards though!

the80sweregreat · Today 12:54

Maybe JL should do a ‘focus group ‘ with mumsnetters ? They always come up with better storylines for ads and soaps and dramas than the original!

the80sweregreat · Today 12:55

Yep, the Stones are cashing in and I bet Sam fender also gets a cut too. Although I like him so that’s ok!

Posh grandma in huge house. Appallingly behaved children. Stupid talking dog. Wet parents. Disco gran. What a waste of the luminous Kristen Scott Thomas!

Exactly. As if Kristen Scott Thomas would tolerate such horrible children!

Did she turn her office into that big play room? What a lot of rubbish.

AgathaDanbury · Today 13:03

The children remind me of Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter.

Some odd choices for a Christmas Ad.

LeedsLoiner · Today 13:04

Pingsung · Today 12:52

What is clear from this is that a group of mumsnetters would have come up with a much better ad! So many good ideas.

Edited

To be honest the two kids in the advert could probably have come up with a better one !

ProtestantTraybakeQueen · Today 13:04

I don’t really get it at all.

LeedsLoiner · Today 13:08

It reminded me of that horrible insurance one they did where a horrible little boy trashed the house and all his sisters belongings and work in some 'creative outburst' which was banned for being 'misleading' when it turned our they do not actually pay out for deliberate damage. https://www.theguardian.com/business/video/2021/oct/28/john-lewis-let-life-happen-ad-pulled-for-being-potentially-misleading-video

Never seen this before.....but wow.

That’s because we’re all marketing directors who had to give it up once the children came along as we couldn’t work weekends and evenings anymore as DPs “work hard too” and want their lie ins.

Improved after Gramdma left those shitty badly behaved kids behind and went on a shopping trip. Ending would be much improved if it was Grandma surrounded by lovely things she had bought herself from John Lewis, with the kids locked outside in the cold.

Thanks for this! It really made me laugh. Mumsnet at its best as they say!

I'm not even sure what she did get them from John Lewis?! Maybe that's not the point. Patronising to older folks? Did like the dog though, cosy house and at least it was different I guess.

I think she went mad in the haberdashery dept and turned the study she had wanted them kept out of into some kind of soft upholstered disco room. The advert is horrible and rewards bad behaviour and rudeness (parents and children). No Christmas spirit at all.

Magicpaintbrush · Today 13:17

Actually I am heartily sick of these bloody Christmas ads with their virtue signalling or attempts to make us sob into the sprouts, it's bollocks. Whatever happened to just a good old jolly Christmas ad with Christmassy music which focused on the products rather than trying to teach us something or make us better people. Just fuck off. I miss the good old days - 12 days of Christmas with Hellman's mayonnaise! The Bisto family! I don't need to see an advert with some morose family drama around the Christmas tree to want to buy stuff. It isn't Christmassy, it's tedious.

moderate · Today 13:17

There is no chance that those children immediately understood the nature of the experiential gift she was attempting to provide for them.

This!

John Lewis ads have become too self-aware. I feel like I'm being directed to summon up emotions as if on stage, rather than feeling those emotions directly.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · Today 13:21

Fascinating that almost everyone on X loathes it (a few tediously bringing up the mixed-race family) whereabouts almost everyone on the John Lewis Facebook page absolutely loves it, lots saying it made them cry.

telling of her ‘dashing off to good old Johnny Lulu’s”

is there anyone here who describes John Lewis thus?

morose! love it!

eta.
an antidote to morose, better after 2 Baileys, is/are the cat/kittens vs
Christmas Tree vids on youtube and doubtless elsewhere, unbeatable

Just as I was thinking that is the worst ad they have ever done, I came to Mumsnet to see the comments. How they made me laugh, and restored a bit of Christmas spirit so sadly lacking from this dreadful ad. Well done Mums.

I couldn’t agree more! I feel quite cheered up now after reading these comments and seeing that it’s not just me, it really is bad on every level!

TFImBackIn · Today 13:30

CloudySoul · Today 09:54

I don't get what she ended up giving them. A gaudily decorated room? They won't be able to take that home with them, will they? Bring back Monty the Penguin, the best Christmas ad ever.

I thought that, too! They didn't have the money they wanted, so they got a room full of tinsel instead.

MrsMitford3 · Today 13:31

I love Christmas and I am most willing to feel Christmassy and I cry at the opening of an envelope.

This left me stone cold.

Is it a message to tell all the old Grannies to up their game?
I just saw spoilt children and inept parenting and have no idea why John Lewis would think this would engender any warm feelings?

Also-please note JL-I literally have no idea what it is she actually bought-so not even a success with product placement.

It's a flop for me!

the80sweregreat · Today 13:39

I’d rather a more traditional Nan making some mince pies with the grand children with they buy her a naice top out of JL ? Too boring I suppose. The Waitrose ones are better than the Jl ones sometimes this time of the year. I haven’t seen a ad yet though ! ( have to look out for it)

3peassuit · Today 13:40

I just wonder what happened in the boardroom when the advertising company revealed the advert.
