My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

My brothers and I supported Liverpool growing up.

When I was 16 our mother decided that we had too many Liverpool t shirts, so no point buying any more of those, and suggested to all of our relatives that it would make a nice change if they bought us Manchester United tops instead. I think everything we opened that year was related to Man U.

That's really odd

when my mother forgot to get me anything, I was 17.

That's awful, you must have been so hurt! What happened when she remembered?

On my 50th birthday my dad called and I thought he was phoning to wish me happy birthday, but he just wanted to ask a question about his computer which I didn't have the answer to and then he said goodbye and hung up.

To be honest it was better than some of the crap I had received before. I woke up to plastic bag as my 'santa sack' with a hair slide in it, my hair was too short to use it.

There might have been an orange, I can't remember.

My boyfriend picked me up and at his house I got presents and it was Xmas.

AllStarBySmashMouth · 09/10/2026 17:38

I have coeliac disease so you can guess the worst presents I somehow still receive after all these years lol.

Can’t think of any bad gifts for me, but my husbands uncle loves car boot sales. Husband is a goalkeeper. On year this uncle got him two left goalie gloves from a car booty. Another year when he was younger he bought him just one glove!

I once received cheese that was absolutely black with mould as clearly had been left under their tree for however long until it was given to me. Wrapped.

Stockings and suspenders. From my MIL.

😂😂😂 omg that’s hilarious!!

I got given a huge box of Thorntons last year. I've been vegan 26 years. However they did get good use, I took them to my parents for xmas dinner and everyone else enjoyed them!

Easter, rather than Christmas.

My uni boyfriend: "Mum said to be romantic and buy you an Easter egg, but you're supposed to be on a diet - so here's a box of chocolates that someone brought as a present to the house."

My mum was living with us a few Easter's ago whilst she waited for her house sale to complete - it was generally awful but one stand out was when I got her an Easter egg so she wouldn't feel left out when I gave husband and child theirs. She subsequently went to do some shopping and bought me back - an avacado.

She also tells you what she is/was going to buy you that never materialises, like the saying is the thing. One easter she promised my child a really fancy M&S egg, child had not asked , she volunteered , have you seen those x eggs, i will get you one. On the day went to hers, no egg, I didn't get you an egg. Right why promise then? She told me about 10 things she was going to buy me for my 50th, none of which materialised. Last birthday I worked out she's spent £8 on me, am an only child, she's only one grandchild - she has three people to buy for.

The nightdress unlocked a memory, I had a short white nightie with red piping and the words "hello there" on the front, I was slightly older than the other poster - 11.

I got a fire dvd off my husband at the beginning of our relationship. My house already had a woodburning stove and I've no idea why he thought I might want a fake fire when I had a real one.

My great aunt made a huge fuss about how special her gift to our family was one year. We were intrigued and anticipating something wonderful. At last the big day arrived and we opened the beautifully decorated and beribboned box to reveal...a large onion!

Dohraymefar · 09/10/2026 18:09

MIL gave me a bag of her second hand bras that she’d grown out of.

zingally · 09/10/2026 18:11

My best friend bought me a book of sex positions. Graphically shown with actual photographs!
Bear in mind, I was 17 at the time, a virgin, with close to zero interest in boys then.
But I knew enough that I understood there was no way on earth I could take that book home to my parents, so it went in a supermarket car park recycling bin on the way home!
What possessed her, I'll never know!

Stockings and suspenders. From my MIL.

What was she hinting?
Meanwhile, my late DH was a nightmare for choosing inappropriate gifts. One year he insisted on giving his (then) two GGDC a bag of (second hand) clowns despite me saying I did not want to do this. Went down as one would expect. I stopped letting him have anything to do with presents after that.

When I was about 8 my nan bought me a bin for my bedroom. She thought it was nice because it had a flower cover on it. The thing is I really liked the bin, I remeber my mum telling me I was a good girl for being so grateful but I actually was just pleased with it 😂

Aren't bath bombs just the ultimate "can't be bothered even thinking about it" gift?

(Sorry! 😬 But I think you should probably be more insulted than baffled ...)

Janie1962 · 09/10/2026 18:25

For my 37th birthday my mum bought me a plot in our local cemetery!

I got their name in secret santa

We’ve had some corkers - a pack of 5 notecards as a shared gift to a family of four, you can imagine the scrabble to see who got the extra one! A bag of giant pasta from TKMaxx - we now know who buys said bags! A bag of Epsom salts for a sporty teen girl - she was thrilled (not) and maybe best of all a millennium countdown candle Christmas 2000 - which was meant to be started on the 1st dec to make any sense!

Not saying it's a good gift but surely Epsom salts is perfect for someone sporty?

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 09/10/2026 18:47

2nd Christmas dp and I spent together he'd bought me a present-beautifully wrapped and about the size of a ring box

I asked if it was earrings or a ring (I love my jewellery) and got back 'maybe' with a wink

I saved it till last

Fucking toothpicks

The following year he bought me a wok

He sticks to lists now

OneNewEagle · 09/10/2026 19:06

I get terrible ones every year. Mainly from my mum, random not nice charity shop finds.

one year from a ‘friend’ I got a random cushion with a photo of myself on it, not a photo related to the friend in anyway. She had gone on my DCs SM and found a photo that I was in and zoomed in on my face. Totally random. I had to put a cushion with my own face on it in the bin.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 09/10/2026 19:18

Love these threads! What goes through people’s minds to give such weird/used/ insulting gifts? I’d love to hear their rationale!

I have lovely relatives so the worst gift I ever received was a set of pillowcases from my GM when i was about 16! she told me they were doe my ‘bottom drawer’ Luckily they were a small oart of a larger mainly nice gift!

I think this needs more explanation. A bag of second hand clowns? I mean, I’m not sure a bag of brand new clowns would be much better. I’m baffled.

AliceNoWonderland · 09/10/2026 19:22

Me too! But I have the good stuff - Who Gives A Crap.

AliceNoWonderland · 09/10/2026 19:24

Had ‘bottom drawer’ gifts from my GM too ❤️
