My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

My friend always gifts things that were obvious give aways. Like when No7 do a thing where you buy 3 items and get a free make up bag. She would give you that bag. Also miniature versions of products that are obviously testers. It's mad as she's worth an absolute fortune and only has the best of the best for herself.

My Dad gave me Colin Clark's memoirs. I was in my 20s, had no idea who he was (brother of Alan Clark MP, who I also didn't know of).

Adult godson last year gave me a tiny ceramic duck which functions as a marijuana pipe. Wrapped in a bit of torn kitchen roll.

I hope you regift things to her. I think I’d make a game out of it. Even better if it has a raffle ticket on it or some such. .

My other grandmother is usually OK but I did get a shower set that said 'Dear Cheryl' on the tag. I still to this day do not know who Cheryl is.

My late grandmother in law used to call me Brenda, (not my name).

This made me laugh ..who is Cheryl ? 😂

We did secret santa too. I once received 2 cabbages and some carrots and parsnips - wrapped together look like male genitalia!

I am screaming laughing at this 😂

In my 20s I used to stay over at my boyfriend's place regularly and would sometimes, if I'd stayed longer than planned, borrow a shirt or pair of his socks. Obviously they didn't fit and I'd never have worn them outside of his flat but they served a purpose. Come Christmas, he gave me men's socks and shirts and on the tags he'd written 'You seemed to need some of these'. The relationship didn't last long.

None bad, apart from the Baylis and Harding gift set things, but the best I ever read on here was a woman complaining her husband forgot her birthday and so rushed out in the morning, and gave her a pork pie. Solemnly presented as she sat in bed,

i still laugh when I think about it,

Oh dear to some of these, and I thought the pack of pink padded hangers from my mum was bad. Mind you, the year I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic she bought me a £50 Hotel Chocolate chocolate hamper!

My brother used to send me text the day after my birthday. The one time he remembered I got similar. I also had just been diagnosed type 2 diabetic.

He has form though, I used to love doing craft things, knitting, sewing, crochet etc.I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 26. Over the years my arthritis has got worse so doing any craft is out of the question. I am 60 this month.

He has sent me in recent years:

A hand sewing kit
An adult colouring book
Fimo and tools
A ukulele
Books - I do like to read but I use a kindle because I find it difficult to hold books

My worst present, a toss up between one of my brother's or when my mother forgot to get me anything, I was 17.

I do not celebrate Xmas now, for a number of reasons, but the above has something to do with it.

Handyweatherstation · 09/10/2026 16:54

when my mother forgot to get me anything, I was 17.

That's awful, you must have been so hurt! What happened when she remembered?

On my 50th birthday my dad called and I thought he was phoning to wish me happy birthday, but he just wanted to ask a question about his computer which I didn't have the answer to and then he said goodbye and hung up.

When my DC were something like 7,5 and 3 my BIL (their Uncle) asked what they wanted. I offered a couple of suggestions so he'd be a hit as he was a bit awkward as a person and always spent Boxing Day with us.

He ignored the list-which obviously was his right-and gave them a card which said that he had bought them a goat in Africa.

A lovely thing to do but slightly missed the mark in this case 😂

When she was a lot younger,my dd was obsessed with monkeys

She had monkey everything and asked me for an 'adopt a monkey' (this was some box set thingy-you bought the box with a toy and voucher, sent the voucher off and kept the cuddly toy)

You'd get updates via the mail about 'your' monkey

My mother said she'd do it for her

Told me she'd bought it so I bought other bits

On Christmas day,dd opened her present-a fucking 'adopt a rhino' box set

She's never liked rhinos, never shown an interest in rhinos and was really gutted

My mother's excuse was 'I didn't like the monkey one'

I ended up spending money on a monkey one (I was a skint single mum) just so she could say she'd done it (we got bloody rhino/monkey letters for the following year)

To top it all off,she went off bloody monkeys not long after-she swapped it for groovy chick, bang on the door

I don't think she ever really forgave her nan (who had done it on purpose to be spiteful)

It really took the gloss off Christmas day and then my mother then lost it with her and told everyone dd was 'ungrateful' and 'spoilt'

Utter waste of £30 (or £60 if you include the right one too)

I gave someone i worked with and didn't like loo roll.

Expecting to see myself named and shamed on here

LemonadePockets · 09/10/2026 16:57

My ex husband once bought me a phone charger WIRE for my birthday ..

I said what I said 😳

NorthernDancer · 09/10/2026 16:58

I once received a packet of sanitary towels in the office Secret Santa.

AnotherNewNotebook · 09/10/2026 17:03

One year, my ex admitted he couldn't think of what to get me. On Christmas morning, I was presented with a £1.50 chamois leather that I'd bought for my car the day before as it was old and damp and kept misting up. He'd got it out of the car, wrapped it, and included the £1.50 so he'd reimbursed me.

All from the same relative:

  • a book about the story of Jesus by Bear Grylls (I’m not religious and have never shown a particular fondness for Bear Grylls)
  • a vegetable peeler
  • a set of coasters with pictures of owls on (I’ve got nothing against owls, but just a very random gift and goes with nothing in my house)
We have, over the years, tried to suggest presents don’t need to be exchanged, but it falls of deaf ears 🙄

Also, harking back to my late teens with a boyfriend at the time- I bought him a £40 aftershave (it was a lot of money for me to spend at the time!) and he got me an Oasis t-shirt in size XL (I was tiny) which was clearly a gift to him that he had regifted. Lesson learned on my part.

Not a birthday/Christmas present but...
Friend had a boyfriend who was a bit young for his age (not ND or anything, just naïve).
She had been a bit unwell and was recovering in bed.
He bought her a cabbage, to 'cheer her up'.
It was a lovely cabbage though!

shellyleppard · 09/10/2026 17:05

My ex father in law brought me a kitchen bin for Christmas one year. His reasoning.....our other bin was always overflowing!!
Only cos his son was too bloody lazy to empty it!!!
Thankfully binned the pair of them 🤣🤣
My ex sister in law always, always brought me a scarf and cheap smellies sets for Christmas. Every bloody year. Straight to the charity shop....

FunPreventionOfficer · 09/10/2026 17:06

A shoe rack that hung on the back of your door made from the white plastic covered wire that aiders are made from..
It was in a massive box and I saved the huge box until last. Never been more disappointed.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 09/10/2026 17:12

A friend received a pair of diamond earrings from her husband - for pierced ears.
He was surprised when she didn't put them on, and couldn't understand that you can't just stick them through unpierced ears !!

My grandma once got me a Newcastle united shirt even though i don't like football. My cousin always gets me bath bombs even though i keep telling her that i cannot use them.

So did @ToadRage (both recipients of a Dear Cheryl gift!) - are you two the same person, or related? 🤣

My brothers and I supported Liverpool growing up.

When I was 16 our mother decided that we had too many Liverpool t shirts, so no point buying any more of those, and suggested to all of our relatives that it would make a nice change if they bought us Manchester United tops instead. I think everything we opened that year was related to Man U.
