My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

Secret Santa at work, my colleague got a packet of needles and a wool bobbin maker. He was not at all delighted! We never knew who bought it.

Ahwig · 09/10/2026 20:17

My ex husband opened his Christmas present from his mum and dad, it was a body warmer, fine. He opened his present from his gran, it was a body warmer and then he opened his present from his aunt and it was a body warmer.
So 3 body warmers was quite funny but the fact that the 3 of them always went shopping together and had been together when they bought them was hilarious.
By the time he opened the 3 rd one he and I were hysterical. On the plus side my dad and my aunt both got an extra present that year.

Crikey!

Doesn’t it just mean you sleep better when lying down, or am I a complete innocent? 😁. Especially when printed on a nightie bought in the kids’ section.

When I was 7 my uncle got me an illustrated version of Shakespeares Twelfth Night for Christmas. I was a bright kid, but that was really too advanced. When I came to do it at GCSE of course I couldn't find it!
Same person also got me a kids hat and gloves set when I was 35. (Much too small).

I used to read autobiographies and biographies at that age. Mam would get them for me on her library ticket. She'd try to get me interested in kids books, I'd read some but preferred these. I was am an odd bod. Ds1 read very early too. As did dm.

They were very educational.

That’s two ‘dear Cheryl’ posts!!!
who is this Cheryl????
😂😂😂😂

I quoted the OP, who was misnamed, being incorrectly named "Cheryl" but the quote missed up.

I was misnamed "Brenda"

A friend received a pair of diamond earrings from her husband - for pierced ears.
He was surprised when she didn't put them on, and couldn't understand that you can't just stick them through unpierced ears !!

I do have pierced ears. One year exH gave me a pair of huge and heavy clip-on earrings (not diamonds, though!). He said he'd never noticed my ears were pierced (we'd been together about 5 years by then).

And he'd used my credit card to buy them.

Like I say, he's an ex.

There are thoughtless gifts and then there are ungrateful recipients! Food hampers are very common gifts at Christmas and unless he knew you had an aversion to smoked food this sounds like a nice gift, not odd at all.

It stunk the house and fridge out!
Also, I don’t rate hampers as Xmas presents. I buy all the food I need, I don’t need more Xmas puddings, crackers and mince pies, it’s just a waste but a way for the sender to feel better about themselves. The person who sent the stinky hamper actually bragged about how he sits with a glass of wine one evening and orders everyone a hamper, and that’s his shopping done. I’d rather not receive anything as I hate having to be grateful for things I don’t expect or want, but he’s not ‘my’ family so I can’t tell him to stop.

At 19 (many years ago) my mum gave me a microwave! I had asked for a video player - it was the 90s. I was very disappointed. We now all do Secret Santa and have wish lists so get exactly what we want.

my MIL is always generous to a fault but always buys at least one random gift. Once I got a slow cooker and her words on the tag said so I could cook her son dinner! I didn’t use it for years because of that but do love it now!

Sartre · 10/10/2026 08:13

My uncle always religiously bought us the shittest, cheapest presents he could which was particularly funny as he is not a poor man. It was the running joke each year, mum would let us open it on Christmas Eve so we could have a bit of a laugh. When I was 14 I was a goth and he bought me a pink Minnie Mouse nightgown, he hadn’t even removed the discount sticker from the label.

Edited

I think hampers should be early Christmas gifts. I remember the excitement one year when a client of my dad's sent him a hamper early December full of fancy mince pies, Christmas pudding, lovely biscuits, jams, sherry etc. It would have been pointless to get it on the 25th.

Toooldforlonghair · 10/10/2026 09:46

A few years ago friend gave me and DD1, then age 18, cable ties!!
Still trying to figure that one out.
(Same friend gave DH a bottle of his favourite tipple and DD2 some expensive up market make up)

fridaynightzzz · 10/10/2026 09:54

We used to do secret Santa and my manager bought someone anusol for being a pain in the arse. It was funny.

So did @ToadRage (both recipients of a Dear Cheryl gift!) - are you two the same person, or related? 🤣

I think she quoted me without using the quote button cos it's my exact words.

Smoked food is carcinogenic. He basically bought her a big cancer hamper

sashh · 10/10/2026 11:54

Another one for the worst.

I have written about this before.

I was about 7 or 8 and my main gift I asked for a silver locket. But I wanted own that I could open.

I went shopping with my parents and picked out a nice oval locket, I was happy I could open it and I knew it would be put away for Xmas day.

My mum had gone round to a neighbour's for a sherry or something, talked about my present and the neighbour offered to let her have an old locket of hers,

It was heart shaped, something I dislike.

So before Xmas I was told that I wasn't getting my main present I was getting something the neighbour didn't want. Something I loathed.

Then a few years later a relative who didn't live near us phoned and said what she was thinking of giving me and my brother and was checking with my mother.

The relative asked about getting me a stand for CDs, CDs were fairly new at the time.

I did not have a CD player, I did not own any CDs, so what did my mother say? She said I would be delighted.

Yet another, you are getting this for Xmas so make sure you are polite about it.

Why she couldn't say, "Oh she doesn't have any CDs" I will never understand

At work, we always used to do a 'Secret Santa' by choosing a name on a piece of paper at random. It started off fine for a couple of years, then became a bit jokey then it descended into nastiness - so it all stopped!

It all got a bit too personal!

I know someone who (completely innocently, she was a really nice person and just read the room wrong I think) got someone a mini vibrator for secret Santa, in the… theme of a hobby she really liked. The receiver was really mad and reported it to HR 😳

NotAgainAbby · 10/10/2026 13:59

My dad gave me second hand frying pans that I couldn’t use on my induction hob and when I very politely said thank you but they won’t work he got angry and said I was ungrateful as they are worth a lot! The toon then back!
For my 40th he gave me a £50 cheque.. that bounced!

Easter, rather than Christmas.

My uni boyfriend: "Mum said to be romantic and buy you an Easter egg, but you're supposed to be on a diet - so here's a box of chocolates that someone brought as a present to the house."

So, first off, he’s an asshole.
Secondly, did the fact that he didn’t pay for them mean they were less fattening?

GrilledPineapples · 10/10/2026 16:44

Growing up (prob aged 13-18 I think) my mums ndn got for me for every birthday and Christmas a box of malteasers and something boyzone/Ronan keating themed. I wasn’t really into Ronan at all but she would be so enthusiastic saying ‘you’ll love this! It’s Ronald again ! I know all the girls love him!’ She was quite old so it was sort of sweet she made such an effort .

Spidey66 · 10/10/2026 17:02

My husband has a close friend who has longstanding mental health issues which sometimes makes him a little….quirky, for want of a better word.

until we moved, he often came to us for Christmas dinner, often bearing gifts.

one year, he gave me a Tesco value loo roll holder. ConfusedConfused

im not bothered about gifts, but if he wanted to give me a gift I’m happy with some cheap wine or a box of frero rocher or something….but a loo roll holder???

he was then disappointed because next time he visited it wasn’t in the bathroom. My husband got round it by saying as we were about to move it was packed up ready to go in the new house. (It wasn’t!)

Precisely!

His mother was lovely, by the way. I suspect that she was gutted when I dumped him - the time that I was invited over to his parents' for the weekend, his mother seemed overjoyed that he had a girlfriend.

Oh dear to some of these, and I thought the pack of pink padded hangers from my mum was bad. Mind you, the year I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic she bought me a £50 Hotel Chocolate chocolate hamper!

Oh that is horrible. Recieving a big box of luxuary chocolates that you can't eat. Why? Couldn't she source some diabetic chocolates if that was the gift route she wanted to go down?

My dad is very good at sending me online purchases for my dd (for me to wrap, obviously) that he has decided she will like (he does at least try with gel pens usually making an appearance) and then a lot of 2nd hand books (that he wants to read when he arrives) as my present. Last year it was a book on Spitfires and a village near to where he lives...

HolyMoly24 · 10/10/2026 18:06

A great uncle I’ve only met about 3 times in my life sent me a tiny pen knife by overnight delivery so that it got to me just before Christmas. I was about 19.

To be fair it was super useful.
