My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

Love these threads!

My MIL once got me brunette shampoo...I'm a blonde. "Well, he always preferred brunettes until he met you"

😂

One year my mother gave me a rituals gift set which I loved. The only problem was I gave her the exact set for Christmas the previous year. Even included the gift tag I wrote out to her ....

My grandma was well known for her skinflint gifts. We found it funny and thanked her politely. One year she bought all her granddaughters a necklace each from the church jumble sale. Mine looked like a lump of rock on a chain. Another year she bought one of those Yves Rocher cosmetic selections that used to be advertised in women's magazines where you could get ten items for £5. And give us one each i.e. 50p worth. I was the executor of her will when she died and was astonished to find she had more than a million pounds in her estate.

My own mum is generally better with gifts but there have been a couple of bizarre blips. One year she gave me a stage prop cat. It really did look like a cat curled up asleep but under the fur it was rock hard so definitely not a cuddly toy. (I'm not mad about cats, don't mind them but dont have one.) When I tentatively queried the unusual choice she announced that she'd bought it for a friend's birthday but friend had given it back saying it gave her the creeps. Gee thanks, mum!

I think I still have it. My kids were fascinated by it when they were little and used to position it around the house and to trick visitors about our "new cat". One day we were having some building work done and I asked builder if he could have a go at opening our roll top desk which had jammed shut. He came into the kitchen looking ashenfaced and said "I don't know how to tell you this love but I've found your cat dead inside the desk".

This made me laugh out loud! Awkward as l am in a training course on Teams and other people must have seen me

MIL used to buy me clothes in either a size 6 or a size 18. These were passive aggressive to suggest I was fat and should slim (I was a size 10).

My SIL announced she was an expert at Christmas shopping once. 3 years in a row gave us the same cookery gift set from Boots. She buys you books for series she has enjoyed and then seems confused you haven’t watched it/don’t plan to watch it, or music she liked. She bought MIL a set of flavoured vodkas (she didn’t drink). She bought DH an animal onesie, he actually handed that back and said told her he was an adult and didn’t wear such things. She used to buy things for DD that weren’t age appropriate, so things for an 8 year old when she was 2 and then be all smug because her girls could do that craft set and surprised DD couldn’t (her DC are 10 years older).

One year MIL gave me and DH a ‘joint’ gift.
bottle of red (DH drinks red, she’s well aware I drink white, mainly fizz)
giant fruit n nut cadburys bar (DH fave, she knows I don’t like dried fruit)
mens socks

It was obviously just a gift for DH that she added my name onto on the gift tag 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
wouldn’t have bothered me at all if she’d given it all addressed to DH and nothing for me. It was just the fact she couldn’t be bothered to hide the fact she got me nothing.

I'd have said that adding you to the gift tag was her (admittedly lame) attempt to hide that she didn't get you anything.

my nana gave my dad a hand that you can put a glove on - i think for his golf gloves- it was supposedly for keeping it sored in a glove shape or whatever haha - but it was so weird he literally opened a hand

FanFckingTastic · 09/10/2026 16:14

For my first Christmas with my husband's family my MIL bought me a Bikini Trimmer. To be clear I had not asked for a Bikini Trimmer... or anything remotely related to caring for my nether-regions. When I opened it she just looked knowingly at me and said 'you've probably already got one of these, but you can never have too many'

I've always pondered whether she a) thought that I was a really hairy-mary and needed the assistance from not one but two minge-trimmers or b) just picked up what was on special offer at Boots.

GreenSpeckledFrogs · 09/10/2026 16:14

One year my MIL got me maternity pyjamas, even though my third (and definitely last) baby was 6 months old. She also gets me pants that are at least 1 size too big every year. Baffling really as we get on well and shes not the type to make a sly dig 🤷‍♀️

cabus · 09/10/2026 16:14

A preloved nylon quilted housecoat in an ancient carrier bag from my mum.

DH got his usual, 'I didn't bother getting you anything Ben, I know you don't like presents'.

My mother is a narcissist and I'm the scapegoat

My golden child brother got whatever he wanted/well thought out/expensive gifts

I got the afterthought

Presents over the years include-
2 awful gypsy skirts in a size 28 (her size-shed bought them for herself)
A nightie in a size 8-i was a 14
Crotchless knickers in a size 6
Nipple tassles
A used bottle of lube
Knock off Katie price perfume (smelt like a cross between cat piss and candy floss)
2 packets of san-pro
A regift of a picture I'd cross stitched for my father the year before
A granny style dressing gown
A bedcoat in the most foul pink and orange
Half used soap
Candles in the shape of snowballs
Half a bottle of cheap bubble bath-i didn't have a bath
A Janet Jackson cd-i didn't have a cd player
A broken free view box-it had been the golden child's and he'd broken it
A netball hoop-i hated netball
A broken sewing machine-the old vintage singer style one-it didn't work and I hated textiles at school
Eye cream that was so old,the product had evaporated
A cross stitch that she wanted me to sew and give back to her (and I was meant to have framed it for her)
A foul pink blanket with sleeves complete with the food stains from the person who'd last worn it
Slippers with the dirt from the previous owners feet still visible
A belly button stud (didn't have it pierced at the time) that fell apart as soon as I took it out of the small plastic bag
A lump of cannabis (I don't do drugs)
A cheese grater that fell apart the first time i used it
A bottle of cheap red wine that she'd won in a raffle (I don't drink)

The thing is,I'm easy to buy for-a box of chocs or a voucher and I'm happy

I just wasn't on her list of priorities

Neither where my children as she did exactly the same to them

She will never understand why I'm nc-it's worth it for not getting utter tat alone (and I wasn't meant to get rid-or she'd start screaming at me)

momtoboys · 09/10/2026 16:23

My DH once gifted me a snow shovel.

DH got me a Black and Decker Workmate. To be fair I was pleased with it, it came in handy when I laid a new floor in the living room.

Nellodee · 09/10/2026 16:27

My friend got a home dentistry kit once.

Aworldofmyown · 09/10/2026 16:27

Only Fools and Horses board game from a very close family member. Ive never watched it!

Sunbringer · 09/10/2026 16:28

A bag of miscellaneous collected items from the in laws - a bag of nuts from their business class flight, the makeup bag from another business class flight, a small statue that DH had made as a small child, a free lemon hand wipe.

It was brilliant. DH face was an absolute picture. God knows the thought behind it because they’ve been nothing but generous and excellent present buyers in the intervening 15 years.

Noodge · 09/10/2026 16:30

I have copied this from a thread I started about SS a few years ago. I refuse to participate now!

All of the times I've participated have been rubbish gifts, apart from the year before last (I think) when I got a cute single serve bottle of local gin, and some novelty xmas dog treats (I love my dog and she's very popular among the team too)!

First one I ever did, new team member got me and didn't get me anything. Blank stare when he was asked why (by me and others). I had got some lovely hair accessories for the woman I got, which were well received.

Second one, again I didn't get anything. This time the excuse was that his shift pattern meant he didn't have time. There were early and late shifts, early one finishing at 16:00, late one starting at 13:00.

He was a smoker and I had bought him some very well-thought out smoke related things. I ended up giving them to my lovely manager who was also a smoker.

Third one, I as always bought some thoughtful presents-I was presented with a box of cheap brown hair dye. I dyed my hair bright colours at the time. There was no 'joke theme' or such for which it would have made sense, and I had no desire to dye my hair. Binned, and had cost a fraction of what I had spent and much lower than the budget given.

Two different work places.

I bought my Dad a bonsai tree once and he sarcastically said 'Oh I'm right into that', so I guess I am not immune from giving crap gifts myself. I genuinely thought he'd like it, and it wasn't cheap.

Seaside3 · 09/10/2026 16:31

My mum is shit at gifts. But mainly for me. My kids think it's hilarious that whilst they get a minimum of £50 for their birthdays, I'm lucky if I get £30. Which is the amount I've been getting since o was about 21. I'm 48.

One year she got me a set of plastic kitchen scales, complete with a charity shop price tag (£5) and beautifully presented in a plastic bag. She had insisted I went to collect it before I went away on my birthday treat. It did come with a bottle of wine a friend had gifted her.

My mil (may she rest in peace) gave my son the same power ranger annual 3 years in a row. And insisted in giving my daughter the pinkest, fluffiest things she could find. My daughter was a tom boy through and through.

cantsitdown · 09/10/2026 16:35

We got a really shit air wick candle once, it wasn’t even in its original packaging. Just clearly someone had found it in their cupboard and gave it is, it smelled awful. This person wasn’t short on money and was a close relative.

Elsvieta · 09/10/2026 16:35

Sanitary towels from inside a vending machine he'd taken off a wall. He (distant relative) was a builder renovating a former pub that had stood empty and near derelict for a LONG time. I would think from the packaging they were from the seventies. They smelt strongly of damp.

AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer · 09/10/2026 16:37

The first Xmas I was with my now DH, his parents bought me a penknife. I don’t camp, I’m not into scouting. I still remain confused about it to this day - it was 11 years ago, perhaps I will ask

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/10/2026 16:37

My XP was the WORST present buyer I've ever met. His family didn't do presents. They bought themselves something and told the 'gifter' how much they owed them. Sensible, I suppose, but not a lot of thought involved. So when he was with me the poor man would panic completely and totally lose the plot.

I once mentioned I liked owls and from then on every single gift I got was owl related. He gave me a stuffed owl eventually which terrified the dog. I do like owls, but only a normal amount and nobody wants THAT many owls!

Finally I asked him for a pair of boots for Christmas. We agreed that we'd go out in town one day so I could choose and try them on and he'd pay. We went out in town but he didn't want to go in any of the shops, because apparently he'd get too hot, so I never got my boots. Instead he bought me five boxes of the same chocolates. I mean, at least they weren't owl shaped.

ChoccyHobknob · 09/10/2026 16:38

My MIL and her sister have an ongoing bitchy xmas process - MIL is larger and her sis gets her size 8 clothes, sis is slim and so MIL gets her size 22. Always hideous. They are married to two brothers so have to be civil most of the time!

Our next door neighbour was a keen gardener well into his nineties, his pride and joy was his amazing vegetable garden. When my mum came to stay (age 60s!) he would leave her "carefully arranged" onions and courgettes on the hedge between our gardens!

Edited

For some reason that made me think of a bower bird. Grin
