When do you remove your Christmas decorations?

I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

We had 4 trees this year plus other decorations and all but the main tree in the lounge have been taken down in the last 2 days , the main tree is going over the weekend .

Normally down by NYE, but DC comes back from dads today and I didnt want to tidy all presents away and make xmas jist disappear while they were gone! So tomorrow, probably.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/01/2026 11:52

Epiphany (6th Jan). I bet the 28th people have had them up since end of Nov.

PPAP · 01/01/2026 11:53

Im actually itching to do it today, which is surprising as I love xmas but I feel like I want to start the new year now.

Maybe tomorrow after I have had dinner and 1 last festive film today

FionnulaTheCooler · 01/01/2026 11:54

Did it yesterday. I like my living room all tidy and clean for the new year coming in.

Tryagain26 · 01/01/2026 11:54

Normally on 12th night but sometimes a bit earlier but never before New Year. That's just plain wrong .

RegretUnavailable · 01/01/2026 11:54

Twelfth Night/Epiphany.

TheCurious0range · 01/01/2026 11:55

Usually epiphany but next week I'm back to work on Tuesday and it's a busy week so they'll come down Sunday or Monday. They went up December 7th so I get a month out of them

luckylavender · 01/01/2026 11:55

6th Jan.

marilyntaylor · 01/01/2026 11:57

6th January/ Epiphany

AgnesMcDoo · 01/01/2026 11:57

This Saturday or Sunday before I go back to work

obviously they’ve stayed up for Hogmanay and now NY day.

would just be entirely in festive to come down before.

Tis still the season - wrong to take em down before.

Terraarts · 01/01/2026 11:58

The 12 days of Christmas. Decorations go up Christmas Eve - you do the maths…

Rainbow1901 · 01/01/2026 11:59

Odd bits and pieces of decorations are disappearing each time I walk up the stairs to be put into the boxes before they go up into the loft. Nothing drastic but strands of tinsel from wherever they were draped and ornaments securely wrapped plus the baubles the cat keeps knocking off the tree and playing with.

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/01/2026 12:00

6th January.

Dolorsy · 01/01/2026 12:02

12th Night/Epiphany

PersephoneParlormaid · 01/01/2026 12:03

Mine have all gone bar one, which will be up until the 6th. I like to start the New Year with a clean house.

OutieModeOn · 01/01/2026 12:03

New Year's Eve. It's DD's birthday today so we like to remove all Christmas stuff and put up birthday bunting instead. Otherwise it's too easy for her birthday to just be rolled into Christmas which doesn't seem fair.

SquigglePigs · 01/01/2026 12:04

When I was growing up they always came down on New Years Day because we generally hosted a NYE party so the decorations came down as part of the cleaning up.

Now I have a looser aim of "before we go back to work/school" so likely either Saturday or Monday as we have plans on Sunday and we all go back on Tuesday.

RobinTheCavewoman · 01/01/2026 12:07

Over the weekend I expect ready for a fresh start to back to school and work. I might start packing away some of the clutter tinsel on frames and festive ornaments before then, but the tree will be the last to go.

SmileyMoonset · 01/01/2026 12:07

They don’t go up until mid December and they come down on 12th night.

I really don’t understand people who put them up really early and then whip them down on Boxing Day. It seems entirely to be missing the point (while acknowledging that they can do whatever they like in their own homes!)

skyeisthelimit · 01/01/2026 12:07

I take them down on 12th night. The people I know who take them down on Boxing Day have had them up since early November. It just seems back to front to me. Christmas is a few days in December, and with 12 nights of Christmas goes into January

Fixydodah · 01/01/2026 12:08

Did it on the Sunday after Christmas, so last weekend. It’s that funny time of year when I can’t tell what day it is. They only came down because I had a huge row with DH which ended with me telling him he had spoilt Christmas so I yanked most of them down. I regretted it when I did it, but I am glad they are gone now. And we are best mates again. I would normally take them down 12th night but I like the early take down so will keep that up next year.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2026 12:10

Maybe even the 7th this year, since a Gdd’s birthday is on the 6th.

Never before the 6th Jan. A cold, dark time of year needs lights to cheer it up!

I’ll be leaving the lights on a big houseplant (more like a mini tree) until the clocks change at the end of March.

ReignOfError · 01/01/2026 12:11

Mine are generally up from a week or so before Christmas until January 5th or 6th. This year, they will come down on Sunday, as I’m busy Monday and Tuesday.

LongDistanceClara44 · 01/01/2026 12:12

I always do it 6th January or the weekend before kids go back so 4th would have been the plan this year, but ended up taking them down on 28th this year, never done it before and it felt wrong but we just had no space for the kids to play with their toys. It has been worth it to see the kids playing without our limited floor space taken up by the tree. The room feels so much bigger.
